Before diving into my typical cesspool of snarky post quiz commentary allow me to thank all the teams who showed up last night for dealing with an intermittent sound system and a camera crew. It was a lot to ask and we really, really appreciate it.

A big thanks also to all The Snug staff who made sure not to trip over light stands and had to weave a narrower path through tables.

Also a big huzzah to teams who showed up in uniform: #15 Bus, Slump Busters, and The Junior College All Stars.

Thanks also to quizmaster Will The Thrill and Sinead for keeping things moving. For a second it looked like we were going to finish up at about 1 am but you guys sped it up nicely.

OK, onto the quiz. Some tense competition between teams that are used to having their way with... quizzes. Junior College All Stars avec quizmaster emeritus Diva squared up against The Slump Busters and the greatest two man powerhouse in quiz history a very talented team called Jesus & Tequila who did not get any screen time and were sure to let me know about it.

A fucking brutal night for Zatoichi who were poised to at the very least take second until the last round. Round Eight... you guys hate round eight... If you're going to kidnap a team, you could do worse than taking half of Zatoichi for their music knowledge alone.

I really liked round one on Hermit Virgins (hi eekerg!) rewrite the hits. Natalie Winslow, quizmaster in exile, wrote that one. I wrote the bonus question for it. Look for more in the future.

Or something like that. People sure did HATE the mountain pass round. It's like I tried pulling that shit off in the middle of Iowa. This is Colorado, man. Purple mountain majesty, windy passes that probably killed thousands of immigrants to ensure our safe travel. Show some respect. Or not. Who am I kidding? I know, let's get back to TV, fast food and dick jokes, our bread and butter.

So it was a good solid quiz last night with two person teams like Bukkake Goggles holding near the top and much flip flopping in round eight. That's the way we like it. Come from behind, sneak attacks, quiz ambush. If Chuck Norris played quiz he'd be like Touched By An Uncle who invariably shoots into the top three, in this case the two spot, just at the last minute.

Rough night for #15 Bus who looked like the front runners until round eight bit them in the butt. Good showing though, but not enough to beat the squad of quiz regulars turned quizmasters: Jason Mueller and the Terhune Duo of Chrystal and Peter of Who'd You Sleep With To Get Mike Jones? Peter nearly aced the mountain pass round (can you say Native?) Jason knows stupid movies like his name was Kevin Smith and I'm assuming Chrystal knows everything else.

Believe me, if the quiz was as fixed as we say it is they'd have lost by one point. Though lest it not be said, this masochistic team was sure to note that their victory seemed hollow due to the no show status of front runners like Jesus & Tequila and The Slump Busters. Well, you guys have $40 in Snug cash so I'm sure you'll be back and so will they so....grudge match.

Oh, a plug: The cumulative winner for the month of August will receive their choice of a Head Snowboard or a really sweet golf bag, the make of which I'm not certain. The cumulative prize rewards participation as much as domination so like Woody Allen said, half of success is just showing up. Or maybe that was our president. Same lesson.

Eli Mishkin of Denver scenesation the Hot IQs will be our celebrity guest quizmaster tonight at The Irish Snug.

I don't know if we'll be able to persuade him to sing for us but I'm sure he'll rock the mic nonetheless.

A good turnout for our first Under The Snug pub quiz with a mighty conglomerate formed between freelance smarty pants Rusty and Big Money No Whammies. I love all you guys, but this team cannot stand because you'll become a super power and the quiz gods will be forced to smite you. The only thing you're missing is Evil Rob and Shannon.

On another note: curious if people like the downstairs quiz better or if they miss upstairs. I'm partial to the former because I can actually get a table, plus it feels sorta kinda like a quiz studio or a geek salon.

Other observations from last night: People like science fair questions and people like 80s cartoon questions even if M.A.S.K. and Voltron through many for a loop. Big Money No Whammies missed all of one point on the music round, which they wisely jokered. Their lead diminished thanks to some strong geeking from Tuna Fish Sangwich who mustered a full squad this week. Respek! to the newbies at Team Blank who kicked much ass on their first night out. Pssst: joker round 2 or 8, they've got the most points.

It's a bad sign when a trouble bubble pulls you over on the way to quiz. Even if it was only for lapsed registration stickers on the plates, nothing too sexy. My stash of smuggled Indian buttplugs (they're for a friend) remain safe. Anyhow, it was a good quiz that almost went horribly wrong any number of times not least of which was the police.

My computer crashed mid quiz, something it has never done before. And this computer has done a lot of bad things. It once emitted a plume of smoke from the keyboards weeks before a very major deadline. I've sent it back to apple to have the hard drive replaced twice and a motherboard once. One time they just said they fixed it... I think computers should come with insurance like cars where you get a rental while yours is in the shop. I suppose it's tempting fate to insult your computer while typing away on the damn thing, but hell: You suck computer.

The big news of the night was that I had to shave points off of house regulars, Big Money No Wammies (sometimes Honky G) because they had a seventh player come in mid quiz.

Must give Rachael, Dave, Victoria and uh...don't know the rest of your names...sorry of Big Money props for being so gracious about your disqualification. Ya see, they would've won by five but rules are rules and it's six to a team even tough your #7 showed up in round six.

Big Money wanted to know what the etiquette is when a friend shows up mid quiz and your team is full. Do you have to tell them go sit over there? Well, um, yes you do. Hate to be a schoolmarm but explaining to other serious quizsters that the 7th person sitting at your table isn't playing creates the same sort of perception of impropriety as a vice president who used to preside over a company that is making mad loot off of military contracts from his war. Oh wait...

The only other thing I can say is if you know you're going to have a seventh later in the evening, just start off with two teams of three. Failing that, let your quizmaster know that you've pushed the team size limits and s/he will take appropriate action.

In other news: Everyone was stumped by the complete the lyric round but knew more about Texas then I expected. I got to give away Instant Happy Childhood Memories breath spray to the bonus internet question winner.

I likes me a good your mom joke as much as the next fellow, but my goodness that one was getting worn out like a Dane Cook set last night. I'm talking to the ladies of the Taints....

But if anyone's actually interested, here's a few choice facts about my mom: She cuts coupons like it was her job. She loves gardening, but is so paranoid about deer tics she dresses in all white, tucking her pants into her boots. Finally, raised by Irish immigrant parents she's fervently opposed to food with flavor. Hahahah. Just kidding mom. Maybe.

Ok, and now the quiz. A quick clarification. Jokering vs. Bonus Question. The former is something you're allowed to do once per quiz and it doubles your points for that round. The Bonus question is for a free drink or in the case of one question last night, an MP3 player. It does NOT figure into your score, it's just for a pint.

Now that that's out of the way, it was pretty competitive last night except for the 1 spot which was held by Fish In Chaps who normally go by team name The Deadly Cobras and play at The Bulldog.

Sweet Petal Douche is on a quiz junket as they played yesterday at the Bulldog as well and were in the top three for most of the night until falling behind later in the quiz.

Let's see, what else. Oh, only Matt from Fish and Chaps played the Bonus Internet Question. Be sure to check this site before quiz so you can be eligible.

The stalker gawker visual round was difficult, I know, but I also considered it an interesting conversation piece. Speaking of interesting conversations, I meant to point this out last week, but Matt who's on staff at The Snug mentioned that Jaws is an overrated horror film, or at least an exclusively regional horror film since people in Colorado and other landlocked states have no real construct of going to the beach regularly and worrying about sharks.

Wow. I'm still out of breath. First night on the job, or at least at The Snug. I didn't know where to set up so I plopped down at the bar which was great because I got speedy service. You know, cause I swill at least two pints before hitting the coca cola when I'm out rocking the mic iBook G4.

There were some regulars, some stragglers and some folks just having dinner at The Snug tonight. It was a good opening salvo as folks got a feel for how a GWD quiz works.

No one knew a whole hell of a lot about sex and sci fi, however, people knew quite a bit about guitar legends. And it's always fun to ask questions about porn on your first night.

Missouri Compromise was dominating the quiz though the man sitting at the bar with Clueless seemed to know an awful lot. So too did Rarebird Eejit who got the Capt. Kangaroo bonus and even knew that Bob Keeshan was Clarabell on Howdy Doody. Damn.

In the end, Honky G had the better round eight and held consistent in the others to edge into the one spot. We'll see how they hold up to the pressure of defending their title...
