PSA: Rod Stewart Is Male
Khaleesi

Tonight I made a few points. 1) A team kept yelling their correct team name at me. But. They kept spelling it differently each time. I don't know if they were playing a trick on me or truly did not know what their name was. If this was done in ernest, it was done masterfully.2) I educated people that Rod Stewart is male. HALF of the teams put Rod Stewart for Kim Carnes.3) You all are huge nerds. When I asked were the adductor canal was, I would have taken an answer that was as unprecise as LEG but you guys gave me answers that were as specific as MEDIAL THIGH. Also, well done, you guys, you are my people. After round 1, the first three teams were separated by just

Who IS This Guy?
Uncle Buck Mulligan

I mean… I’m me. Ben. “Uncle Buck Mulligan” in the Geeks Who Drink universe (yeah, we have our own universe). And frankly, this is one of the first times the Uncle Buck reference has really paid off. I feel like I lived up to being the rough-around-the-edges fill-in who came to teach you some important life lessons. Or maybe just some regular lessons. Or maybe just some… stuff. But deeper than that, I wanted to get into how I ended up in front of you tonight. Because sometimes a man has to fill some column inches, and I like the story. So this is the story of how I hired Brian, accidentally made him quit, then found out he was back, and

Dragons. Just Butt Loads of Dragons.
RobotNarwhal

In case you weren’t paying attention, dragons came up more than once during quiz.  Sure, I asked that question about the dragon boats of the Tuen Ng festival.  And, whenever Game of Thrones comes up, dragons are sure to follow.  It’s funny, my ex-hubs used to mock me constantly because I liked reading fantasy books.  And I’m talking dragon-riding, nerd-porn fantasy by the likes of Anne McCaffrey and Katherine Kerr.  So of course, when I picked up Game of Thrones, he oft disdainfully referred to it as “that dragon book you are reading.”  Now, this was a few years before the TV series debuted, although it was rumored in production,

Dear Ray, We Missed You...But Not That Much
The Josh Pit

We missed you, Ray...Sorta.  We had a fun night at Glass Half Full with Geeks Who Drink.  We gambled with questions and walked that Stairway To Heaven.  We travelled from Hong Kong to Russia.  It was a pretty great night, Ray.  And you missed it. We hope you get better, because your power points are better, but we did alright.  Yeah, Long Live the Leggings, Let's Get Quizzical, Darn, The Quiz Is Coming From Inside The House, and The Jukes took home some movie tickets for bonus questions, but they were bummed that you didn't dole

I Now Pronounce You Geek and Geekette
Melissa

Wow!!! I am still in shock!! We actually witnessed a marriage... like a real, actual marriage at our quiz at Props Brewery this week!!! I honestly thought it was a joke at first but it was legit. After thinking about it I realized, duh there is no better or more epic way to get married. You get to answer geeky questions AND have multiple chances to win some free beer. Sign me up.  We also had to say goodbye to two of our very special regulars Tim and Kristi from team See You Next Tuesday. They will be missed and they went out with a bang by cleverly changing their name to We Won't See You Next Tuesday. Best wishes in Hawaii. Watch out for volcanoes

That's not Ghostface Killah
Sugar Beet

I don’t know why but apparently it’s easy to confuse the precious cherub Rick Moranis with Ghostface Killah. To give some perspective about this week at Flight, we had 6 teams, FOUR sixteen-point rounds, and a whole lot of beer. The stakes were high, to say the least. And although we weren’t able to remember that Jet Li wasn’t in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, almost everyone was able to say that Hong Kong residents live to be in their mid-eighties. To say that I was proud and surprised is an understatement. Not only that, but six teams showed up to play tonight, and two of them were from a couple weeks ago (looking at you, Bird Nerd Herd). Returns are always

Episode 1: The Bounty Menace
DJ ROB ROB

Well, I said it was probably going to happen, and now it's happening. The bounty has begun at Cleats Bar and Grill EAST: come play, beat the Jones team and the Deadpool team, and win 50 bucks straight up. Open-net wins are permitted, and you damn better bring your best in the coming weeks to beat these two teams and win that cash prize. Also it's coming out of my own pocket, so you could say I'm the coolest Quizmaster. YOU COULD SAY THAT. I typically perform one of two routines when I'm done with quiz on Tuesday nights, and that's either 1: have a bowl of cereal, or 2: drink whiskey. Tonight it's whiskey. The team

It was a dark and stormy night...for a quiz!
David

Rain rain go away, time for quiz on this Tuesday! As they say…I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it. We all came together for an evening of food, fun and song! Four double points awaited our merry band of quizzers tonight. We kicked off the quiz with a look back at the week that was and moved on to a musical round that revealed a travesty of epic proportions. Round three was for the gamblers in the crowd while the next round could have used some sake to help it go down a bit better. After our little intermission we jumped right back into the thick of it with round six and slowed things down for an interesting round seven where one audio clip brought about potential

Tongue Tied
Alex

It was great to be back in action tonight.  Grey graciously covered for me over the last two weeks (RIP Alamo) which brought me back a bit rusty, but eager to return.  And what a night we had!  20 teams filled the room to almost full capacity.  I love the energy when there are so many people quizzing.  It certainly makes it challenging for me to keep up with the scoring, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. We had a great mix of categories and it was a huge night for scoring opportunities.  We had 4 rounds that gave teams 16 point opportunities.  For some reason there was

I played "Galvanize" by the Chemical Brothers to start and I hope someone understood

Round 4 tonight tripped me up with its first question, asking which European country gave away Hong Kong in 1997. As of today, Theresa May signed the letter to be hand-delivered to the European Council president, Donald Tusk, that means the UK is officially leaving the EU. And so it is not exactly a European country anymore that gave away Hong Kong in 1997. Europe is a strange concept, not based on a continental plate or any real geographic barriers - take a poll of where the eastern border is and you’ll hear as many answers as people - and is instead an ethnohistorical concept more so than any other continent. I’m not sure what we’ll be referring

I'm an archaeologist. The Shroud of Turin dates to ca. AD 1300, evolution is really real but more complex than you probably know, and no, I don't have a particularly strong interest in identifying the thing you dug up out of your backyard that you think is totally a Native American burial item/pirate gold/Roman pottery. And no, I don't dig up dinosaurs, but I did once read this other book, by a guy named Bakker*, and that plus repeated viewings of Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones inspired adolescent me to get into the "boot sciences" as a certain Norwegian archaeology professor calls them. Now I'm living the dream.

A few things we learned tonight: Isn’t everyone just going to try to be T-Rex in Monopoly now? Can we all agree that Kim Carnes sounds like Rod Stewart? My Quizmaster style can best be described as a mix between an announcer at an NBA basketball game and Brad Neely's Dear Reader: Wizarding People.  Jordan's quizzlings has the propensity for random bouts of karaoke during shitty 90's songs e.g. Ashlee Simpson, and Smashmouth.  I am notorious for leading aforementioned sing alongs.

Revenge of the Patio Ghosts
StephanieLange

Time to revisit a topic that comes up every time I watch an international football/soccer match, namely, national anthems. I love learning about national anthems, partly because there a lot of history in little cultural nuggets out there in the world. I find generally national anthems fall into three major categories: a) Our country is great and we love it (think O Canada or Advance Australia Fair.) b) Death to the oppressors! (I like La Marseillaise for this one, but Argentina's national anthem, with the lyrics "Coronados de gloria vivamoso/ Juremos con gloria morir!" is also a good example, and that's after they toned it down. They both contain lyrics translated to English

An Embarassment of Points
Tas

They did it to us again. We had one of these nights a couple of months back, when we debuted at Global Brew. And once again, we had potential for you folks to rack up super-high scores, because we had FOUR 16-point rounds tonight. On top of the usual music and final rounds, we had extra points to dole out for our visual round and one of our traditional rounds. But some things don't change, and one of those was the fact that the music round was the biggest scorer for our teams, with all one of the fifteen teams tonight putting up double digits. And 3-2-1 Go! might be kicking themselves, because had they jokered the music round, and not the first round like they actually

My, oh my, oh my it was good to be back at Twist hosting quiz. I missed you kids. Before we get into the recap, just need to clear up a rumor. I missed last week because I was in urgent care getting x-rays done. I went for a run, got 15 feet from my front door, and fell off a curb. I’m an idiot. Sever sprains on my right ankle and left knee, but should be fine! So no, nothing broken, I plan on being there for many weeks to come, and NO… I did not break my legs masturbating... But that was creative. Round 1 answers all contained the name for a cut of meat (get it? *ROUND* 1). For those of you fighting with me about what a “Plate”

Super-secret bonus QM tonight was me!  QM Tegan.  Aw yeah.  Always fun to take on the mic at McLaddens.  But clearly the regulars miss their regular QM, with Teams SAD! and We Like Mike.  But total kudos for We Like Mike for a strong showing as a two person group, and for Old Guys for a 1.5 person group at their first quiz!  Tonight was extra special for another reason as well… there were more than two 16 point rounds!  Then add in we had a wonderful number of brand new players.  WOOO! Things started out pretty good, seems like everyone’s recently
