"The Regulars are coming out"...to quiz night

You all can see the scores to the left, so I will spare you of a heavily detailed run-down of tonight’s results (congrads to The Lovechildren of Dick Pole & Rusty Kuntz, as well as I’ve Made a Huge Mistake, and email bonus winner Abby). Instead, here are some thoughts crawling around in my mind:

After every quiz night, a predictable wave of emotions washes over me. I am elated that people actually show up to our weekly shindig, and I feel a great sense of relief. Relief that I am standing upright, that I didn’t embarrass myself enough to have to leave town, that I didn’t get bottles thrown at me, and that I am sober enough to drive home (the vast majority of the time, at least). Where am I going with this? Good question, I’m glad you asked. The biggest relief for me tonight was knowing that QM Shelly will be back next week, for picture-taking, fabulous outfit-wearing, number-forgetting, and (fortunately for you) blogging! I/we are looking forward to having you back next week, partner (please come back!).

Nextly (new word I just made up), I am shocked at your lack of catoptromancy knowledge. C’mon people (Chaotic Armadillos), who could really be hypnotized by cats (other than 1/3 of the internet)?

Finally, I am imagining how the movie Stand By Me would have turned out with the talent selections you offered tonight. Try to picture the high comedy to ensue when Whitney Houston, Richard Dreyfuss, Morgan Freeman, and Psy stumble across a dead body together.

And now, for some definitive statements:

and no, I am NOT looking forward to a Weird Science remake.

Might be Pub Quiz, But Could Be Margaritaville

After the sheer insanity of last week’s quiz, this week was downright relaxing. With eleven teams this week - and room to breathe - it seemed almost like a holiday. I felt like I should wear myy flip-flops and channel my inner Jimmy Buffet. Cha-ching.

No birthday songs this week (though our geeky bar group did lend some extra applause and shouting at one point to match the din coming from the dining area), no need for stall tactics to tally scores…just easy-going fun. A joy on hump day.

This time, we treated Beer & Loathing in Potsdam to a $50 gift certificate in exchange for their 80-point, first-place effort, and awarded $25 to Hans YOLO. Dan from Veloci-rappers was the Email Bonus Prize winner. I bet he was super-psyched when he saw that Birth Control Gum was all his. (Use it well, my friend.)

Scores in the first half of quiz were, overall, “above-average” to “kick-butt.” Not quite as impressive in the second part of the quiz (as a whole, I’m saying), but not bad either. I wonder what next week will bring?

The time will come soon enough…Pub Quiz is ON for next Wednesday night at 7!

Hats off to all y’all this week…record-breaking numbers for Potsdam! Nicely done, Quiz Friends. Best of all, despite the big numbers, people were patient, enthusiastic, and smiley. Quizmaster Tom and I – and the Cactus Crew – admire your eagerness to be a part of our Wednesday night circus, and appreciate your great attitude. You rock!

A tell-tale sign of how the night will lean comes when we offer answers half-way through the Quiz. By that point, people are mostly fed, they are pleasantly liquored up, and they are feeling comfortable enough to let loose a little. It can be either lead to great audience participation, or straight-up belligerence by one or more participants. This week, it was all good. It’s great to look out at everyone as they offer cheers and groans and sing along with the audio answers.

On the topic of quality participation…we had some great participation on quiz answer sheets as well. The most consistently fabulous answers came from Hell If I Know!. If addition to using their own team name as an answer, the partners also gave answers such as, “I have to pee” and “Christ, pick one we know!” Sure, they could have just left blanks, but smart answers are so much better. Gold stars to them.

Gold stars to Bartender Mindy and the Cactus Crew, too. Gracious! Can you say hustle?! Good work, kids.

Kudos to our winners tonight – first-place Champion River Gazers (CRG), second-place Partially Krossed Out, and email bonus prize winner Abby of the CRG.

Once last thought to conclude… A few hours before entering the Cactus doors this week, I reflected about the early days of the Quiz, back in 2010…and how we were jazzed to eventually get 40 people. We consistently outpace that now, and this week we had more than double that initial target. Huh. The Potsdam Quiz has come a long way, baby.

Thanks to all who have been a part this amazing adventure… We’re looking forward to seeing all your bright, shining faces when we do it all again next Wednesday night at 7!
