Seriously. Unglued, I say, and I’m not kidding. Just prior to the start of Quiz, I couldn’t shake the feeling of having something on the bottom of my shoe. I looked for paper towels, napkins, toilet paper stuck on there…and found nothin’. It wasn’t until some time later that I discovered that not one, but both, of my shoes’ soles were detaching themselves from the rest of black lace pumps. How utterly bizarre.
Luckily, the rest of the Quiz stayed relatively intact. The smaller-than-usual crowd tonight was to be expected, what with the first of the local colleges’ graduation ceremonies having just finished last weekend. Thank goodness for our devoted (addicted??) core teams. Thanks for coming out and making it fun for us to do what we do.
Kudos to all who soldiered through the first couple rounds until the bar cleared out a bit. It’s true, Captain Planet, that you are not the only ones who ‘hate loud people.’ But remember, this it could be – and has been – worse. Last week, for example.
Ack. My blood pressure wants to go up, but I’m thinking better of it. What would Tony say? He’d say “Relax.” (See last week's photos.) Ahhh. Serenity now.
Favorite answer of the night: Again, Captain Planet: Round 4 (the small penis round)…answer was “dog whistle”, but CP suggested “weenie whistle.” I’m gonna have to research this, ‘cause I don’t even know what that means!! At the same time, Quizmaster Tom like Cap’t Planet's suggestion that “Needle Point” (rather than “Sharpie”) would describe the autograph-friendly permanent marker. Rich.
Props to No Love Stains! for their praise for QM Tom, whom they asserted was “killing the audio tonight.” That could have been meant in a number of ways, but we’ll take it as the best kind of killing possible. Tom does put a lot of thought into each set list and he deserves some recognition. Nice work, Partner!
Also…some love to our tag-team bartending team of Amanda and Kyle. Thanks, kids!
I haven’t much else to add this week…you saw the pictures already, no doubt, and the scores as well – congrats to No Love Stains! and Sparkle Motion for taking the top two slots, by the way. Oh, yeah...I almost forgot. Once again, we did have some concern about cell phone use during the quiz. Even after laying out the Quiz rules more than once the blatant rule-breaking persisted. So, sadly, for the second time this season we have had to issue a DQ. And that disqualification goes to….Pie-urea. Sorry, y’all. But here’s the deal: If you really need to use your phone, just take it outside. It helps your team to concentrate and helps the rest of the Quiz participants know that you are not cheating. Win-win. Which is, in turn, a win for the Quizmasters, and we thank you for that.
Finally, although by rights this next bit should be in the Suggest A Round section of GeeksWhoDrink.com, I’m going to include the “Better Actors for a Category Than Ellen Page” suggestion list by No Love Stains! Included were: William Shatner, Drew Barrymore, Gary Busey, Fran Dresher, Rosie O’Donnell, Harland Williams, Luiz Guzman, and Quizmaster Tom. What a list!
We'll be back at it next week - and each Wednesday in May. Same time and place. You know the drill. See you Wednesday evening at the Cactus Grill & Cantina!

What. A. Night.
This week’s Quiz Night was like none that I’ve experienced so far at the Cactus Grill & Cantina. And since I’ve been a regular staple at the quiz since we began this effort in 2010, I’m confident that you can say the same. Here’s a sampling of what set this week apart from all the rest:
1) Guest appearance by Ken Jennings
2) Boisterous enthusiasm for Weapons of Mass Destruction, Crime & Punishment, and science.
3) Guest appearance by the boisterous Clarkson University Class of 2012 which lead to #4
4) Format breaker! No answers read for the second half of the quiz
Of the ten teams that started the Quiz, and most went the distance, completing Round 8. But none of our teams stayed any longer than was absolutely necessary. Heck, even our winners were ready to head out the door, prizeless if need be. The reason for the mass exodus? An infestation of joyful near-graduates clad in neon green shirts. (See the photos if you haven’t already done so.) Yup. The CU Seniors were pub crawling their way through Potsdam. Thankfully, they crawled slowly enough to allow us to squeeze the Quiz in, sacrificing only the answers for Rounds 6-8. It could have been much worse.
In addition to an unconventional end to the Quiz, we also saw some interesting moments during the quiz. Having a recorded Ken Jennings stand in for the Quizmasters in Round 6 completely confused one of the Cactus staff who couldn’t see the Quizmasters’ table. “Who is THAT?” she asked me as I went by, camera in hand. I had to explain who Ken Jennings is and how his voice ended up at our Quiz…apparently he’s not as much a household name as one might think. Huh. Who knew??
A favorite moment for me came as answers were being provided for Rounds 1-5. Excited noise about Crime, Punishment, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and the like for Round 4’s questions lead to Quizmaster Tom’s plea to “Cheer the Periodic Table of Elements!” (Round 5) as well. The best part was the reply “Hooray for Science!!” that floated up from a table near the back. Classically geeky. Perfect. I never expect that any quiz night will be “perfect.” However, we always seem to have a few shining moments. I don’t know about you, but that’s what keeps me coming back. Of course, perhaps, for you it’s the possibility of picking up some store credit, like Lambchop, No Cupcake and Sparkle Motion did this week for 1st and 2nd places respectively. I’d understand that. But hopefully it’s a combination of the two… combined with the siren song of the Cactus salsa. Mmmm.
So, nothing more left to say except c’mon back next Wednesday at 7pm and join us at the Cactus Grill for the some more stellar Quiz moments. See y’all next week!

This week, I bow before our Cactus Quiz regulars. I’ve always felt that having a Quiz in Potsdam is worthwhile. Tonight proved it.
A later-than-usual notice went out alerting everyone that Quiz was, indeed, still on, and (a little surprisingly, given said lateness) a number of our committed regulars turned up to battle to the bitter end. And bitter it was, as scores were uncharacteristically low this week. JMT earned just 57 points to win. Recall, Friends, that last week’s top score was 86. A far cry from this week! But so goes the Quiz. One simply can’t tell, and that’s why it is worthwhile to come weekly.
Teams universally slaughtered the visual round this week (all 7s and 8s, except for Team Awesome, who packed it in early). And JMT did have a perfect Round 4 (current events). Other rounds were a little more sobering. That’s ok, though. I would have been right there with y’all. We had some challenging rounds this week!
Speaking of challenging…that reminds me to thank a few people for getting us rolling in May, because it was a small feat. If you see the boss, Larry, be sure to thank him for extending the Quiz. Also, cheers to Bartender Amanda for stepping into Bartender Kyle’s large shoes. I know it was tough at times, but you held up nicely. Thanks for helping us make the show go on! And for making sure that the show was above board. Sorry, Leroy Fellows & Friends (LF&F), but if you step out of line, Amanda will remind you where to go next. Even though you were celebrating a 21st birthday, you still have to follow the rules.
While I’m at it, thanks to all the rest of the “Cactus Krew” for taking care of us all – Quizmasters and players alike. This definitely includes Server Chris and whoever made my Yucatan Salad, which was deliciously flavorful. Mmmm.
Hats off to Quiz Master Tom for accomplishing a whole bunch of tasks on the ol’ quizmaster checklist this week, and to our friends at Geek Headquarters in Denver – Matt, Eric, Jason, Kent, Sandy, Chelsea, and the list goes on – for all that they’ve done to keep the quiz rolling. This “little” event in Potsdam has a pretty big team supporting it, as you can see.
Looking back at this week’s Quiz, despite the big team behind it, there was a feeling of intimacy in it. Problems were few, good vibes were many. I think QM Tom summarized it best when he said at one point, mid-quiz, “This is basically just like putting on a quiz in our backyard.” Admittedly, I’ve not tried having a quiz in my backyard, but if I did, I’d want it to be with the likes of all you.
One more note before I close out…we did see a number of phones out (and in hands) of our birthday partying friends in LF&F, despite being warned that phones should disappear during Quiz. It’s no fun to disqualify teams, but sometime it has to be done to protect the integrity of the Quiz. And so, after conference at the Quizmasters’ table, the verdict stands…LF&F earns the DQ. (sigh) I know it’s hard, but please keep those phones tucked safely away while the quiz questions are being presented. Thanks, everyone!
Anyway, tune in again next week, kids. Certainly there are more good times ahead this month on Wednesdays at 7 at the Cactus Grill & Cantina. Ciao for now, my friends...
