I have been on stage in front of an audience in one way or another for just over 26 years. Started off by trying out for a children's musical theatre company when I was 13 (mainly because I wanted to get into the pants of the girl who told me I had a nice voice and should try out). That led to many underwhelming roles in high school drama and then NOTHING for about 6 years.

Then, as luck would have it, I was driving around looking for my next ho-hum job when I heard an advertisement on the radio for an improv comedy show, ComedySportz. I took a friend of mine for her birthday, volunteered for one of the games and got a few laughs; more importantly, a resurgence for that heroine-like need of strangers being impacted by something I did on stage. I auditioned the following day and was invited to join the very next week...and I have not looked back.

Nowadays I pay the bills as a technical writer for a local startup software company and perform / write comedy whenever I get a chance. If I have one professional goal it is to invent a new font called "Sarcastica". I can be seen at ComedySportz, occasionally performing at The Hideout Theatre and various other improv venues as well as on-mic and behind the scenes with Master Pancake Theater.

My wife and I have been married since 1999. I met her while karaoke DJ'ing at the Common Interest. She was the manager so I married her for job security. We have two amazing sons who are catching on to my antics WAYYY too soon.

My life can be hectic at times but I wouldn't change a thing!

"Hey Dav, we want you to host a quiz show that is cleverly written, hilarious at times, encouraged by booze, and puts you on a microphone. What do ya say?"

Shit yeah!

Thank you all for coming out to the Nomad last night. Mother’s Day emptied a lot of pockets but not yours and I was thrilled to see so many of you out for a night of quiz. In our crowd we had a couple of punsters! Among them were David Guggenheim, Gary Hallock, and my diametrically opposed sworn adversary and all-around amazing guy, Ben Ziek.

Ben and I have competed against each other 3 times in the last 4 years at the O. Henry Pun-off. The first time he took me out in the semi-finals. In 2011 he defeated me in the final round and last year I exacted my sweet revenge and bested him for the championship! This year, who knows? I do know it will be a challenging and fun and cannot wait to see how this plays out. Ben and I also have a background in improv and for fun we put on a little exhibition game of 185. Perhaps last night’s crowd was not the best one to do that for but it mattered not. Ben and I have an affinity for games and 185, while not the strongest exercise for punning, is a great outlet to flex our quick wits. Thanks for putting up with our antics!

Sadly, the documentary team I mentioned last week ran over schedule on their previous shoot last night and had to postpone. No worries though. They spent a good part of Wednesday with me and sometime later this year you will see just what a dork I truly am behind closed doors.

We had a quiz last night too! By far my favorite moment had to do with Round 4’s Jewish grandma voice that I do. At the Round 6 break, I went around snapping photos for this blog and one table outside requested that I continue using that vocal affectation as its sound carried better in an area with a lot of chatter. Who knew? Here is your recap:

Round 1 was for Duh-mmies. Round 2 shook things up a bit and Round 3 drew you in. Round 4 was mashugana and the Visual Round 5 kicked ass at Pictionary. Round 6 came in biblical proportions, Round 7 was “marry”, and Round 8 was random.

Taking 2nd place last night was We’re Number Fun! Nice job! Our first place team eked out their victory by one point. But a win is a win is a win! Congratulations to Our Team Name is Horace!

Thanks again to everyone for coming out last night. I had a blast and hope you did as well. I would love to see you all at the 36th Annual O. Henry Pun-off this Saturday from noon ‘til 6:30ish down at the O. Henry Museum! It is going to amazing and I need a cheering (jeering) section! If I don’t see you there, I will see you next week and don’t for get to bring a friend!

Until then…

"Hey Dav, we want you to host a quiz show that is cleverly written, hilarious at times, encouraged by booze, and puts you on a microphone. What do ya say?"

Shit yeah!

Hello fair quizzers of Nomad! Thank you all so much for braving the threatening weather (which was more show than anything). Having been in involved in the bar business in one way or another for the 15+ years, I knew that a nice rain followed by a calm would bring in the crowd and this tavern theory held true tonight. We had a significant upturn in attendance with an astounding 24 teams making their way to the bar. The noble and talented bar staff was more than up to the task; they were hungry for more! You certainly gave them what they desired! Bravo =)

As you might recall, a couple of weeks ago we held auditions for some up and coming Quizmasters. Last night one of our hopefuls debuted for a little official trial by fire! Congratulations to Lindsay for making the cut and for surviving the chaos that is the Nomad quiz crowd! This was her second night under the direct tutelage of full-fledged Quizmasters. I can honestly say that, based on her performance tonight, she is well on her way to obtaining the limited, self-perceived fame that those in my ilk have the dubious honor of holding. Thanks for making her feel welcome and for not pelting her with rocks and garbage.

The highlight of my night came not from the quiz but from the rare opportunity provided by having a trainee – schmoozing with my quizzers DURING the quiz! Sure I was a little bit schmaltzy, but I had fun! Plus it gave me a chance to check out first-hand the audio outside.

Oh yeah! We also had a quiz. Here is your recap:

Round 1 was for us. Round 2 reminded me of Led Zeppelin’s “The Song Remains the Same.” And Round 3 was super! Round 4 was odd and the Visual Round 5 was delayed. Round 6 had worlds collide, Round 7 was Auss-some, and Round 8 was random.

Taking 2nd place was the topical (President Obama visited Austin last night) Hail to the Quief! Way to go kiddoes! Our champs from last night took the quiz and owned it like I owned my Superman Underoos in my childhood! Congratulations, Really, Obama? Stubb's?

Hey Nomad! In case you have not figured it out by now, I will be defending my title in the 36th Annual O. Henry Pun-off World Championship next Saturday (May 18th). There is a film crew coming to town next week to shoot a documentary of the event and yours truly is one of the subjects. As such, they will be filming a segment at Nomad. You should come back out and show your support for the quiz you love! It would mean a lot to GWD…and bring a friend!

Until then…

"Hey Dav, we want you to host a quiz show that is cleverly written, hilarious at times, encouraged by booze, and puts you on a microphone. What do ya say?"

Shit yeah!

I am bursting with pride as I write this. Last night marked the first time James and I ever hosted a Quiz for a Cause. Well, if they all go like last night’s did, sign me up as the official QfaC host! It was absolutely amazing. We had a total of 15 teams signed up to play and 12 of those paid the entry fee. That along with the photo booth, raffles, and our game of Category Die, we were able to raise over $740.00!!!

Aileen was just as awesome as anyone could ever hope. I know I will be rooting for her on her run! For more information on the charity visit the following pages:

Here is Aileen’s running blog link: http://aileenrunsahalfmarathon.wordpress.com/

And her donation page link http://www.active.com/donate/konaSTXA13/atxARitchie

There were some many memorable moments from the quiz. From some yahoo yelling out answers, to that badass round on before and after movies; the whole evening was just marvelous. I even had some old friends show up. It was great seeing Tyler Bryce from “Thinning the Herd” and John Porter, one of the coaches for the Texas Roller Girls! I have known them for years and having both of them under the same roof was a pleasant surprise!

We also had a quiz. Here is your recap:

Round 1 was one OF a kind. Round 2 had biblical proportions and Round 3 was tasty. Round 4 was perfect for jocks and the Visual Round 5 had you cross-dressing your fingers. Round 6 was fun before and after, Round 7 made you question WFT Hollywood has been up to, and Round 8 was random.

Taking 2nd place last night was Drinko De Mayo! Nice job guys. Our champs from last night took home $60.00 cash plus the $30.00 voucher from Nomad and of course our admiration (giggle). Congratulations, My Couch Pulls Out Into a Shorter Team Name!

So that will do it for this week. Geeks Who Drink at Nomad is about to change a little bit in the near future. Nothing too traumatic for you guys (but it will directly impact me). Our kick-ass scorekeeper, James, might be moving on to host his own venue. It is still up in the air but the wheels are in motion. We will have a new scorekeeper but nothing that compares to the likes of James. You have no idea how much fun I have due to his being there. Neil Simon was rumored to have a quite brother who was 10 times funnier.  James is indeed my brother from another mother! I will keep you all posted so we can send him off with a bang! He’s here for a while longer so come back and see him, and me and bring a friend!

Until then…
