My day job is actually a night job, where I spin all the hits all the time.  Be careful... I might just soft rock your socks off.

I met both President Clinton and prop comic Gallagher the day of the Million Man March.

I love The Venture Brothers, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and anything with Boston Rob Mariano.

I've been QM'ing since October 2010 and have loved every minute of it.  I'm actually sitting here counting the minutes until I can work on next week's quiz.  One... two... three... fourteen... seventy... eleven hundred... one jillion...

... I'm also crap at math.

With two weeks remaining in this month’s Cash Grab championship, the tension was ratcheted up incredibly high for tonight’s quiz!

Coming off of the most awesome, sentimental quiz ever, it was just a matter of time before our quizzers were back at each other’s throats, smelling blood in the water.  Sentimentality and sweetness went out the window, and cutthroat quizzing began!  At our first scoring break, six teams were within two points of first place!  After round seven, any one of five teams could have taken the crown.  But when eight rounds of questions were done with, we still had two teams with a score to settle.  In the one corner, it was Alyssa and her all-star squad Y… MCA?  In the other, we had Dayna and the raucous Kitty Chandeliers vying to knock the champs off of their throne.  After a sudden death round of quiz, Alyssa’s team was once again on top, winning 3-2 in the extra session.

The win gives the Y… MCA’s their record-setting eighth Lion and Rose victory for 2012!  Some quick math shows that they have now finished first in 40% of our LNR quizzes since New Year’s… time to kick it in to gear, everybody else!

We had some great teams participating tonight.  Some new faces popped in the crowd, like 3rd place Laces Out, FML nd The Valley 3, But We Gotta Include Kellen.  And how about those Honey Badgers and their team that spanned the entire length of the dining room?  Thank you all for coming out and rocking the quiz!

And the quiz was most certainly rocked, with an incredible five teams finishing clear of the seventy point barrier.  Some may say it was an easy quiz… I prefer to think you guys are all just wicked smart!  A quick breakdown shows that everyone should have jokered R2 tonight, where the average score was 13.1, as opposed to the R8 average score of 8.5.  The best non-double point round goes to R4, our tiny penis round.  Good to know you guys are so familiar with your tiny phallic objects!

And now, your three week Cash Grab standings!  These include only teams who have played three May quizzes thus far:

Y… MCA? (67+82+74) 223

Not As Cocky As Last Night (57+81+71) 209

Kitty Chandelier (51+76+74) 201

Pull Out! Squirt, Squirt. Gotta Get to Trivia! (52+77+55) 184

Honey Badgers (55+65+58) 178

I have no words.  Really.

I’ve been stalling for hours putting this together because it deserve so much more significance than I could possibly deliver, but I will try to do it justice.  Hopefully you will excuse me this one time for using this blog as a forum for my personal business.

There is a little back story that leads up to tonight’s proceedings.  For those who don’t know, my father passed away last Monday afternoon, four years and five months after his original diagnosis.  It was at Thanksgiving 2007 we learned that he had glyoblastoma mulitforme stage four brain cancer.  I received a call from my mom as I was driving to my Monday night quiz.  By the time I got to the parking lot, I was struck silent.  Without looking at my watch, I couldn’t tell you how long I sat in my car, but I wasn’t ready for anyone to know what had happened.  The hardest thing I had ever done in my life was putting a smile on my face for that quiz.

It’s incredibly clichéd to say this, but my father was larger than life.  There wasn’t a single person in my hometown who didn’t know my dad.  And every person whose life he touched was better for having known him.

He was raised in Melrose, Texas… a town so small that they didn’t have enough girls to play parts in the school play, so my dad and his brothers John and Charles ended up in the girls’ roles, dressed to the nines!  If you had known my dad, you’d know this was the LAST thing you’d expect from him, so when I learned of this at his memorial, I couldn’t help but laugh.

He served his country in the US Army, serving in the Pershing Missile Battery in Germany in the mid 1960s.  After being honorably discharged from the military, he went back to school to earn his degree.  Upon graduating, he began a long and illustrious career as a teacher and even drove the school bus in Rusk, Texas at the time!

My dad was never content to just do one thing, so he began his own manufacturing business in the 1970s, where he employed many of his former students who needed work.  And even after technology got to a point where he could automate most of his operations, he chose not to, just so he could provide jobs for those in need.

He was an exemplary educator, an accomplished dancer, inventor, master machinist and beloved father.

Even though he had been sick for a while, I just knew he’d outlive us all.  It seemed like he had that much power over the world.  Not to mention he was incredibly stubborn.  And that is why we were so shocked when he finally succumbed to his illness last week.  At his most ill, it was so hard to believe something like cancer could take this man down.

When he became ill, my dad began to take stock of his life.  Without a doubt he knew that he was incredibly loved.  The extra years that medical science added to his life gave him a chance to know his 5 year old granddaughter Carissa and his 12 year old grandson Coby.  Along with my sister, Susan, and I, his children and grandchildren were the light of his life.  I know he was proud of us, and I hope he knows how proud of him we are.

I still feel like my arms are wrapped around you, Papa Bear, just like the last time I saw you.

With all this in mind, I’m floored with the events of tonight.

Tonight was my 14th annual 21st birthday party/quiz at the Lion and Rose, and I wanted to make it a great celebration for everyone in attendance.  But unbeknownst to me, so many of you ended up making this the most special birthday of my life.  Truly.

Sometime in the last week, my dear friend Caroline came up with the idea to raise some money in my father’s name for charity.  And tonight, she, Amy, Chelsea, John, Davis and North by Northwest, the Lion and Rose, and so many of my great friends at quiz presented my with a jar that had $900 in cash, checks and pledges in the name of my father for the organization dearest to his heart, the American Cancer Society.

There is not a thing I can do that comes even remotely close to being a proper thank you for this gift.  Just know this… my father would be so enormously proud to know that I have surrounded myself with so many incredible people.

I am so much more blessed that I could have realized, and am humbled by your caring and your generosity.

I will carry with me the memory of this day… the best of my birthdays…  for the rest of my days.

Just after six o’clock this morning, I hit 100,000 miles for the first time on a car I’ve owned.  And I felt a great sense of satisfaction in the moment.  That car has taken me so many great places in the last few years, including to so many great quizzes over the last year and a half.  Tonight, we find ourselves one week away from another milestone, and four away from another… next Wednesday, I turn 35 (eek!) and on the 30th, we’ll award our next $50 gift card to the May Cash Grab champions!

And now if I could only get someone to throw in a free oil change for me for all these miles!

It looks like our two-time defending monthly champs, now known as Winner Is Coming, find themselves in the cat bird seat for yet another title!  We’d all agree this evening’s quiz was incredibly tough, but they persevered and now find themselves with a six point lead on second place in the monthly contest.  Remember, since May has FIVE Wednesdays, I’ll drop your TWO LOWEST SCORES if you make it to all five quizzes.  That’s a pretty nice incentive to drop by the Lion & Rose this month and try to boost that score, eh?

While the night was won but our resident Game of Thrones fans, new regulars We Got Nothin’ made their voices heard with a strong second place finish.  And your resident wunderkinds the Stars and Bars had victory in their grasp, until they were derailed by THE MOST AWESOME DUBSTEP QUIZ ROUND EVER!!!  Seriously, it’s tough to take a zero in a round and come back from it.  But I was sure glad to see you guys enjoyed that one as much as I did.

Third place tonight belonged to the too-soon Junior Seau/Queen mashup team Junior Seau-No… Another ’94 Charger Bites the Dust, who held on to 3rd place by two points over last week’s champs the Honey Badgers

What I’ll remember most about our quiz tonight was the fact that the top eight teams were separated by a mere FOUR POINTS going in to random knowledge.  It was truly anyone’s game tonight… making the victory by Winner Is Coming that much sweeter.

Thanks to everyone for playing tonight.  It’s been a tough week on the home front for your quizmaster, but you guys always make my night better!  Hope to see you all back next Wednesday at nine for my 14th 21st birthday quiz!!!
