Matt (English Matt)

I'm Houston's only English quizmaster. I came to the USA to steal quizmaster jobs from honest, hard-working Americans. Mission Accomplished.

Currently, you can find me running the Geeks Who Drink quiz on Wednesday at Little Woodrow's Midtown. You may also remember me from previous hosting stints at the Ashford Arms and the Maple Leaf. If you see me around Houston, please ask me for an autograph or try and get a picture taken with me.

Well, I must say that it's nice to be back. A combination of hockey playoffs, the Joss Whedon theme quiz and a trip out of town for yours truly means that we haven't had a regular Thursday night pub quiz at the Maple Leaf Pub since April 13. Many thanks to Jared for hosting the Whedon quiz in my absense.

Here's what I've been doing with my time in the time between April 13 and May 10:

1) Sold a couple of kidneys from my collection to make up for my sudden lack of quizmaster money.

2) Found a sherrif's daughter and did it like this, did it like that, did it with a whiffle-ball bat in loving memory of MCA.

3) Harnessed the power of the supermoon to turn into a superwerewolf.

4) Convinced President Obama to support gay marriage through the power of interpretive dance.

5) Entered the French Presidential elections as Monsieur Jean-Pascal Riviere, a notorious flaneur and incorrigible girondist.

6) Ate what one horrified onlooker described as "a truly disturbing amount" of chicken wings.

7) Joined a class action lawsuit against John Travolta, which has nothing to do with massages but has everything to do with how bad Battlefield Earth was.

As you can see, it's been a busy few weeks. I hope you managed to fill your time in similarly entertaining ways.Befitting the Maple Leaf's return to GWD glory, let's talk about the quiz a bit.

The night started strong with a round of "Recently in Stuff"

The most difficult rounds this week were of the audio variety. Round 2 focused on pop songs about dancing but very few of them were beloved enough by our quizzers to be recognizable. One exception would be the song by country superstar Lee Ann Womack. This is Texas after all.

Round 7, a double or nothing round on drug users in movies and TV, was also less than stellar. However, I can't blame the low scores on any sort of unfamiliarity with drugs. The quizzers did very well on  Round 6 "Tasty Buds" which used marijuana slang. Plus, during Round 5, far more teams could identify the ingredients of crack than decipher what goes into a roux.

Travolta Votes Obama spent the whole quiz in the lead, thanks in part to their above-average performance in Round 2. However, James Girthy broke away from the middle of the pack in the very last round, jokering a hefty 15 points to tie with Travolta Votes Obama in first place with 74 points. A tiebreaker round was required, which put Travolta Votes Obama as the winners. Congrats all! Hope everyone is back for a rematch next week.

Jared (Jared)

Hey Guys!

My name is Jared. My wife, Megan, and I moved from the Mid-West to Houston in 2008.

Like so many who frequent there, we felt right at home at Little Woodrows in Rice Village and quickly became regulars. And that's when we first discovered Pub Quiz. The first night that we played, I decided I'd love to do that. So, I auditioned and here we are.

My favorite part of pub quiz is meeting all the players, especially welcoming new teams that join us each week.  So, if you're new to Pub Quiz, or if I haven't met you yet, come on up and introduce yourself the next time you play.

Cheers

“Y'all came into this bar for different reasons, some hockey and some quiz, but y'all come to the same place. So now I'm asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything, I know this – we WILL be here again. Maybe on another day, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten? We'll be here with the belief that through Pub Quiz we can make people... better. And I do not hold to the same for hockey. So no more runnin'. I aim to misbehave.”

And misbehave we did. For those of us that were able to make it out on a Friday night, things were shiny. Admittedly there were more “Browncoats” there than any other following, which just again proves how STUPID FOX WAS for cancelling Firefly and leaving 3 shows un-aired. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

We had a very energetic crowd of Pub Quizzers who had some great team names. Here are some unofficial prizes that I awarded. Hey, I can do that, I’m the Quizmaster.

The Best Team Name of the night went to Wash & the Dinosaurs. If you disagree with me watch this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znxFrgql5dc. Still not convinced, try this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv-z2L8duI8.

The T-Ball Beer Award went to The Hero of Canton. This award goes to the team that ranks next to last of those who played all 8 rounds. They would’ve also won the cheerleading Spirit Stick for being the most enthusiastic team. Every time I read out their name they had to finish it by singing “The Man They Called Jayne.”

If you enjoyed hanging out with other Joss Whedon fans and would like to continue to do so then join the Houston Browncoats at their next shindig. http://www.natakuaya.com/firefly/website/houstonbrowncoats.htm

Congratulations again to the winners Curse Your Sudden but Inevitable Cancellation with a kick ass score of 72 points.

I had a great night hope you did too. I sign off with the last words of Angel.

“It’s time to go to work.”

Cheers

Ah, hockey playoff season is here. The Maple Leaf Pub, being the premiere venue for hockey-watching in H-Town, is full of people and echoing with the chants and cheers of Bruins and Blackhawks fans.

Of course, there's noise of another sort. Thursday is still quiz time and the fervor of the hockey fans must have energized the quizzers to reach new heights. We had ultra-high scores this week - even sixth place had 72 points!

I'm considering my favorite rounds last night and I think it's a tossup between Round 6 and Round 7. Round 6 because I like the wordplay involved in a a Before and After round, especially one about science. Round 7, because it reminded me that I had watched all of those SNLs and can't remember a funny sketch from any of them. I need to stop wasting my time with it.

Winners this week were Titanic II: The Wreckoning with a truly impressive 85 points. Second place went to Here For The Beer with 80 points.

Special thanks to Your Rocket Gave Me North GonnoKorea for starting off with a terrible team name, enduring my insults about it, then coming up with a much better team name to finish out the night.

Here's some news I'd like you to keep in mind. On April 26th, we'll be holding our special Masters of The Whedonverse theme quiz at the Maple Leaf. The quiz will be all about the works of Mr. Joss Whedon, so if you have a Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse or Dr. Horrible fan in your life (and who doesn't?) make sure to let them know. It's five dollars per player to enter, with cash prize for the winners! It's shiny!
