10 years ago, I left the frozen tundra of Canada to escape the blistering cold of winter, only to move to South Texas where I now run the risk of combusting in the blistering heat of summer.  Apparently I'm drawn to extremes.  No middle of the road for this Crazy Canuck.

I was in severe need of a creative outlet and a place where yelling obsenities at people was acceptable, (and wouldn't get me fired).  Then one day I was handed a microphone by the Overlords at Geeks Who Drink.  I was instructed to "Go forth and entertain drunken nerds with wit and snark.  Oh, and ask them these quiz questions while you're there."

And so I did, and it was good.

If you quiz at a venue where video rounds are shown for round 7, then chances are it was produced by me.  I hope you enjoy them.

I have been accused of "hating everything" but I actually like many things.  I am a total geek for Star Wars, the works of Neil Gaiman, The Ramones, Shonen Knife, Nerdist, (Classic) Dr. Who, pro wrestling, good beer, poutine, British television and cheese.  All else is pointless, irrelevant and a waste of time.

I am also a part-time ninja.

There were a lot of new faces at quiz tonight. There were a whole bunch of you joining us through Meetup.com, and there were a few teams that just happened to be at the bar tonight that decided to give us a try. Thanks for joining us tonight! A bunch of our veteran teams stayed home tonight, so it was great to see so many n00bs filling in the ranks in their stead.

One of the things that I love the most about hosting quiz is the back and forth with the crowd. It's very organic and can lead to some really fun shit going down. Take tonight for instance. While going over the rules and I said, “Don't shout out the answers”, someone at the back of the bar decided to yell out the phrase “THE ANSWERS”. Not once, but at least twice. Like I didn't hear him the first time. At this point Paulina looks at me and just says, “There's always one.” To which I say to the crowd, something to that tune of, “There's always one asshole that thinks they're funny.” Everyone laughed, and we moved on.

And then we start marking answer sheets for the first three rounds, and what do we have? A team that named itself, “Always One Asshole”. Well played! I laughed, and it became a bit of a go-to phrase over the course of the night. One audio clip is low in volume and really hard to hear out of the 8? Well, there's always one asshole clip that thinks it's funny to be virtually inaudible. .

We covered some misconceptions tonight, and there were a few of them that are pet peeves of mine. Throwing an “h” on the end of Weird Al's last name is definitely one of them. It's not Yankovich. It's really not. Stop pronouncing his name like that. And people that say “all intensive purposes” need to get punched and die in a fire. Let's add the irregardless people into that list as well while we're at it, shall we?

I'll see you all next week.

Just for the record, I fucking hate karaoke. Actually, that's not entirely true. I had a very enjoyable evening at a karaoke bar just two weeks ago as I helped give one of my favourite Austin Quizmasters's (I have many favourite Quizmasters's from Austin BTW) a fun send off as he was moving from Austin to California. A private room at a karaoke bar was rented, and we had a room full of Quizmasters and much karaoke was sung and a good time was had by all. In all seriousness, there was not a single person in that room that didn't have a fantastic singing voice, and everyone knocked their songs out of the park. I say this because I don't sing. Never have. I may never sing either. My singing voice is akin to two rabid cats fucking while in a blender sent to puree. It's that bad.

That's one of the only fun times I've ever had at karaoke. What is it that I hate about karaoke? First off it's having to listen to some really horrific singing. There are some people that really just shouldn't be up there, no matter how much liquid courage they have in their systems. The other thing I hate about karaoke is that in general I fucking hate the songs that people pick. I'm in a karaoke bar to kick back with friends and have a good time. I do NOT want to hear some twangy sad country song. It's depressing as shit and it brings the whole room down. I don't care that you like the song, you are a downer and need to get off the stage. Also, I can honestly say I've been to karaoke exactly 5 times (not including karaoke that we've held at Geek Bowls), and every single goddamn time, at least ¾ of the songs we spotlighted in round 2 tonight get sung by someone. Like clockwork. Dudebro/redneck is getting up on stage? Yeah, he's gonna sing “Friends in Low Places”. Oh we've got a girl coming up that has that look on her like she thinks she's got a powerful, bluesy voice? Yeah, she's gonna sing “Black Velvet”. Really drunk dude? “Strokin'”, cause he thinks it's funny and original. Two or three drunk people going up together and it's near the end of the night? “Don't Stop Believin'”. Drunk guy with drunk girl? “Love Shack”. Tell me I'm wrong. I've told most of you by now that Quizmasters and Geeks Who Drink have our own list of banned team names that we loathe and abhor, well I'm sure karaoke hosts (or whatever they're called) have their own lists of songs they're really fucking tired of hearing night after night. So as a public service on behalf of karaoke listeners and hosts everywhere. Stop it. No really. Stop it. Pick something else. Give those songs a rest.

Before and After rounds are usually hit or miss. Some nights teams knock 'em out of the park, and other nights, most teams crash and burn. Tonight was a great night for Before and After. Most of you aced it or came really damn close, and I love when that happens. Before and After rounds are some of my favourite rounds, and I was glad that you guys enjoyed it. Some asked me if I wrote it. No. I wish I had because I would have been proud to take credit, but sadly I can not.

Hey, have a great week guys! See you all next time.

Hey gang! The results are in and Lion and Rose won for best trivia night in San Antonio. This is badass, since Geeks Who Drink has always done well in this category and this year we swept first, second and third in all our various venues. Another big win for the geek revolution! This makes the 4th or 5th year that we've taken the top spot in the rankings at one venue or another. We definitely could never do it without you guys coming out week after week and we definitely couldn't do it every year without your votes. So on behalf of the Geek Empire, we thank you.

I'm glad to see everyone made it through Fiesta in one piece. I hope everyone got out there and had some fun. We passed on the night parade this year, and I'm sure glad we did, since right near the end of the parade the skies opened up and dumped a shit tonne of rain on everyone. We live pretty close to the parade route, so I'm sure that if our street was turned into a river, I can only imagine what the parade looked like.

Tonight we rubbed one out with a round on genies. We were reminded of what was one of my favourite Saturday morning TV shows when I was growing up. Pee Wee's Playhouse. I was 12 when it debuted so by then I was growing weary of the usual cartoon fare. And then this trippy, surreal clusterfuck of a show came out and I was hooked. It was quirky, and about as off the wall as you could get in the mid 80's. It was definitely ahead of its time. I loved that show. And it had Laurence Fishburne! Playing a cowboy! With crazy jerry curls! If that doesn't rope you in right there, there's something wrong with you.

What do you get when you mash together two viral hits that are long past their expiration date? You get clip number 8 for tonight's round 2. Yup, we actually brought you Gangnam Style and if you didn't hate that song enough by now, we brought you a version of it where it was mashed up with that Harlem Shake Song. You're welcome. I'm pretty sure we all could have gone the rest of our lives without ever hearing that, but life is full of things we don't like. Just add that to the list.
