10 years ago, I left the frozen tundra of Canada to escape the blistering cold of winter, only to move to South Texas where I now run the risk of combusting in the blistering heat of summer.  Apparently I'm drawn to extremes.  No middle of the road for this Crazy Canuck.

I was in severe need of a creative outlet and a place where yelling obsenities at people was acceptable, (and wouldn't get me fired).  Then one day I was handed a microphone by the Overlords at Geeks Who Drink.  I was instructed to "Go forth and entertain drunken nerds with wit and snark.  Oh, and ask them these quiz questions while you're there."

And so I did, and it was good.

If you quiz at a venue where video rounds are shown for round 7, then chances are it was produced by me.  I hope you enjoy them.

I have been accused of "hating everything" but I actually like many things.  I am a total geek for Star Wars, the works of Neil Gaiman, The Ramones, Shonen Knife, Nerdist, (Classic) Dr. Who, pro wrestling, good beer, poutine, British television and cheese.  All else is pointless, irrelevant and a waste of time.

I am also a part-time ninja.

When someone you've never seen before walks into the bar 30 minutes before quiz starts and they are looking a bit lost and they're wearing a t-shirt with a Lego rendition of Mos from The IT Crowd on it, and his companion is wearing a shirt with Miazaki characters on it, I think you would be making a safe bet if you said that they must have come to play quiz. This is what happened tonight. And I'm going to say right off the bat that I have seen that Mos shirt online and I want it so fucking bad. I love The IT Crowd and that's the coolest shirt ever.

Tonight was one of those magical nights where we got a few brand spanking new teams come out to try their hand a Quiz. Adding to the magic was several faces that we hadn't seen at quiz for awhile making their triumphant returns. It made for an awesome night.

We have some Redditors in the crowd, so I was very excited to unleash our Real Or Shit round on them tonight. I have no experience with Reddit. None. It just looks like a giant, out of control message board to me. You know, the sort of thing people used in the late 90's. It all looks rather archaic to me. But hey, what do I know. It seems that based on our round, there are some fucked up Reddits out there. I'm pretty sure I have no use for a Reddit called “Shitting Advice”, though “Earth Porn” sounds interesting. Many of you were disappointed that there was in fact no Reddit called “Restroom Reviews”. I'm sure by now someone who attended a quiz tonight has already gone online and created a Reddit by this name.. Oh and I also received a Reddit sticker from quizzer Clay tonight. Thanks man. I would put it on my laptop, but there's no more real estate due to all my Tee Fury and Think Geek stickers. I will however find it a nice home someone in my house.

I want to thank everyone for coming out tonight. It was nice to meet you n00bs and it was wonderful to see some returning faces. You all are amazing. I'll see you all next week.

And now, some plugs.

We had to share some space with Spurs fans tonight. People warned me all day that it was going to be a madhouse tonight at quiz because the bar was going to be teeming with Spurs fans. I shrugged it off because a) I can handle it, and b) I was actually pretty sure that there really wouldn't be that many in the bar tonight anyway. I was right on both counts. The Spurs army was mighty small tonight just as predicted. However, this is only the second round. If they advance, THEN I'll start to get worried/prepared for the worst. The fans that showed up late in the quiz weren't even mad whe n I took over the giant screen to run our video round. In fact, I could see that of them were watching it and talking amongst themselves, trying to identify the clips.

I do always laugh whenever Spurs fans come in the bar and watch the game and then are annoyed by my rantings on the mic and ask if they can move into the back room. Like I'm drowning out the non existant play by play on the mute screens or something. Yes, I'm distracting Manu and that's why he was throwing bricks last night, but you moving into the back room will somehow change the outcome, where you can continue to not hear the game in another room. Actually I don't know if Manu was throwing bricks last night, nor to I particularly care. I don't know if the audio was available in the back room either which is another thing I don't particularly care about, but for the purposes of my rant it flows better.  And let's not even get into the Spurs fans dragging their 6 year olds into A BAR at 9pm to watch the game.  We left the bar at about 10:15pm and there were still a bunch of kids and a newborn.  REALLY?  Great parenting there chuckles.  I'm sure that kid will be learning a lot in school tomorrow morning in between power naps on the desk.

If the Spurs are still in it next round, I'll probably get shanked if I even step in front of that screen.

We had a round on manboobs tonight to kick things off. More specifically, fat guys. Part way into the round I remembered The Fat Boys. When I was a kid, The Fat Boys were favourites of mine. I saw Disorderlies many times. I had to dust off their version of Let's Do The Twist that they recorded with Chubby Checker just for old time's sake. I think I need to play more Fat Boys at quiz. What say you all? Actually, I don't care what you all say, I'm doing it and it will be great. I was checking out their Wikipedia page and I saw that after The Fat Boys broke up, Prince Markie Dee actually produced some early recordings for Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige. That's pretty sweet. But now he's a radio D.J. In Florida or something. There was talk about the two surviving members (Buff Love passed away back in '95) getting back together with a reality show where they try to find the next Fat Boy and make themselves a trio again. Who knows if that will ever happen. Here's hoping.

Here are some quick plugs and I'll see you all later.

We had butt sex tonight! What a way to open a blog huh? Ok, we didn't actually HAVE butt sex tonight, but we did have 8 questions on it. The Brando using butter as lube sparked a whole insane discussion about croissants that was unexpected and a great deal of fun. I'm not sure what was going on in the minds of movie producers in 1972, but that year brought us two very famous butt-sex scenes. Of course I'm speaking of the aforementioned scene in “The Last Tango In Paris” and probably the most recognized scene, the one from "Deliverance". Odd that both those movies came out in the same time frame. But hey, it was the 70's. I guess this is what pushing the boundaries of film making was.

I did find it rather amusing that the table of three girls who up until that point had only bothered to play and hand in round 2, suddenly perked and were down with the butt sex round, and every round after that. What am I trying to say here? Nothing. Just an observation.

Another observation from tonight's quiz. It seems that judging by the scores, you guys know more about butt sex than you do musicals. What does this mean? I have no idea, but it makes you a much more fun and interesting crowd than I previously thought.

One of those kinda surreal moments happened right at the end of quiz tonight. We were in the home stretch, I was scoring round 8 and Paulina comes over to tell me that she'd just read that Chris Kelly of Kriss Kross was dead. What? Dude was barely in his 30's by my best guess. So I decided to cut into our regularly scheduled scoring break music to give you that announcement and play Jump. That song was on fire back when I was in grade 12. Everybody was playing that song. And some were even wearing their clothes backwards, which if you are a rapper and famous is a cool gimmick and makes you stand out. When you're going to high school, are in your teens and are a nobody, well it makes you look like a fucking idiot. And we had our fair share of fucking idiots in our school around that time. The preliminary reports as suggesting that Kelly died of a possible drug overdose. Some say that he had cancer. Who knows. I'm sure it'll all be cleared up in the morning. And I'm sure the Thursday quizzes will be full of team names about Kriss Kross and Kelly, and drugs and death. Should be interesting.

Have a great week everyone, and R.I.P. Chris Kelly.
