Charles (Vertigo Chuck)

I'm Charles, Charlie, Chuck, whatever non-derogatory nickname you can think of for Charles. Even though I started QuizMastering at the HandleBar Tavern in December '11, I have quizzed in dozens of places for years. Our teams never quite won anything, but we always have a good time racking our brains for those little tidbits of info that GWD requires nightly.

I am definitely a geek. That picture is of me swinging from two phonebooks leafed together. Yeah, just like Mythbusters used to make. A physicist by trade, I don my mask and head out into the night partying hard and consuming various social lubricants.

Join me at my quiz and I will try to swoon you with my dulcet tones of vector calculus and Star Wars references. If you are really lucky, catch me with my Rubik's cube and I will get rid of its entropy faster than takes a grown man (or woman) to change a toilet paper roll (or paper towel roll)1.

Gordon Freeman is my hero. For the winter gift-giving season, I want a red crowbar so that I can keep it under my pillow while I sleep.

Definitely an awesome night at quiz. We had a Quiz for a Cause event last night. Part of a charity and want to have a kick-ass fund raiser? Look up some more info here. Anyways, Impact Denver showed up to promote their Civic Leadership Program which you should totally check out. They walked away with a couple hundred dollars, plus the winners of the participating teams Michael Vick's Humane Society ended up donating right back to the cause. You guys were my heroes last night, but heroes change all the time. Like Sylar couldn't decide what his superpower should be, so he became everything.

Took a quick snapshot of the Impact Denver crew.

I think after a few more weeks, I will have the entire staff of the school represented by Procrasterbating Vaginatarians and Bruce All-Righty?? in the quiz. Their team seems to grow every week splitting up into two large teams this week. Bring more people. I will have you know that I found a third of your yellow pencils hiding out next to the golf pencils. Or is it a fourth? I'd need to count again, but that is a skill that I can only do while drunk. Like tight-rope walking, or needlepoint. By the way, Procrasterbating Vaginatarians get the Clever Team Name of the night award because not only is the name difficult to pronounce, but it is really hard to not screw up when typing it into the computer. As with all clever team names, you can't stick with it next week. I expect great things from all of my teams, whether it be consistency or originality. You have already placed yourselves into the originality bin. If you want the consistency, work hard for it, like the WMD's (See the scores or slideshow for a definition). They worked hard for it.

Apparently we have the quiz on Tuesdays, because we had two teams tonight with that in the name. Twosdays and Tuesdays with Morons. Interestingly, they were at opposite ends of the bar, and came out with around the same number of points. My opinion is that the team name is always the hardest question of the quiz, and you can find inspiration anywhere. Try not to look at the calendar next time. Watch new TV shows that other teams recommend like Arrested Development. Addicted to that show now. It's kinda scary and hilarious. I don't think Jessica Walter can play any other role than upper-class neglectful mother.

See you all next week! Same Bat time, same Bat place!

P.S. I want to thank everyone for missing me last week. That's what happens when you have a single final exam and they plan it on quiz night with an uncertainty of whether you will be able to make it or not.

P.P.S. I can't think of anything else to put in another post-script, but I wanted to write one out anyway.

P.P.P.S. I just remembered what I wanted to say. Biking on Denvers trails in the summer provides a fantastic view of vitamin D production.

Thursdays at 9pm at Casey's!
Graham (G-Man)

Graham is a complex man. Geek by day, drinker by night, racer on the weekend. If he's not doing Technical Support or thorwing back some JD, you'll find him working on his race car or out at the track on race weekend.

Here I am subbing again for a vet with a faithful crowd of quizzers. I find myself getting those stares again. You know the ones. The kind that a dog gets in the middle of a pack of wolves. The Outsider. An unfamiliar scent. FML. Here we go again. How do I win this crowd over? I know, I’ll make a few jokes during my opening. The mic is muffled. No one heard that. Shit. That didn’t work. Let’s just do the rules and get this over with. “Rule Number 2, DO NOT fuck with….” The tension releases. “He said fuck already! He’s in.” I hear from a close by table. I smile. Let’s do this.

On a rainy night, 8 teams formed our good old fashion quiz. Taking top honor was TPL. Clad in their softball jerseys, no one would dare question them. Our bar-sitting team of The Unitards took second and Charles’ Angels took 3rd. Since that name was a bash at me, I wanted to exempt them from placing. Infact, I was willing to give them 0’s across the board. Then, the unthinkable happened. Charles showed up for the first bonus question!!! IN A SKIRT!!!! Apparently his sex-change operation had been rescheduled. Better luck next time Charles. ;-) How could I give his Angels 0’s now?

Thank you to the awesome people at The Pub on Pearl for the great welcome. I had a blast and I hope to see you soon!!

You know how until recently, Starcraft was put on hold for a while until they released Starcraft II? It looks like Blizzard's releases are becoming more frequent.

Tidbit of information: Grand Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones is totally played by the AT-AT pilot that destroyed the shield generator on Hoth. Yeah. The Empire is everywhere. And the strike-force that took down the rebels was called "Blizzard"

Whenever you go to Dairy Queen, this generation of High School employees doesn't know to flip your Blizzard upside down. Air pressure FTW.

I think I could have a couple more somewhere, but it would be inappropriate to pull them out of my ass on the bus.

Now it's time for another Good Idea, Bad Idea.

Good Idea: Enjoying a pint of beer at quiz.

Bad Idea: Having your computer enjoy beer at quiz.

It was bound to happen sometime. Luckily only about a couple of mL of the stuff got onto the keyboard last night. Enough to make the keys crap out on me. The first scoring break was done manually. Drat, I forgot to scan that. Anyway, a volunteer from Scuba Diving With A Concealed Clicker lent me a MacBook for the rest of the evening. The show must go on. I always wanted to see what it would be like to score manually. Not with 18 teams and a busted computer though. That just won't do. I know my math works though, and that's all that counts. Anyway, I got home, took the lappy apart, wiped the areas that I could and rinced the keyboard out with DI water. I didn't know you could do that until a couple years ago. Unless there is power going to it, you can wash electronics with DI as long as you wait for them to dry. Rhyming lol. It is currently drying in a bag with instant rice. Another clever dehydration trick. Drop your camera in a toilet? Eww. Take out the batteries, rince with DI, and put it in a bag of instant rice. Somewhere in there wash your hands like crazy. Maybe use a bleach wipe on the camera every time you use it. We shall see tomorrow whether or not the lappy survived the process.

Anyway, enough about the laptop, let's get some small talk out with a chat about the weather. April Snow Showers Bring May Snow Showers got it right. Wake up this morning to a blizzard? I would complain, but as a native Coloradan, Coloradoan, I am acquainted to this kind of thing and totally don't mind 2" of snow when I wake up in fucking May... Maybe a little. Let's see if this happens next week too. It has been a trend for about a month now. I would kill for a late-afternoon thunderstorm with 10x the lightning. One can only hope. In speaking of the weather, the Christian Science Reading Room building downtown has planters out front. Totally saw a cop booking a guy for sleeping in one with a handle of vodka as a pillow.

My train of thought disappeared with the sight of giant squeegees.

It has been told many times that I should watch Arrested Development. It's funny they say. You will enjoy it they say. Two teams at quiz had the same reference from the show they say. It's not hard to tell them apart. One of the teams had a PhD. Dr. Funke's Never Nudes and Never Nudes didn't. It was good to see 9 people on these teams, because according to a quote online, there are "dozens of them." It will be watched on NetFlix, do not worry about that. It will be next week's project. I have a lot of those.

Tuesdays With Morons gets the coveted Clever Team Name of the Week award prize recognition honor. Only because they had the biggest chuckle during the first recap. Best Team Photo of the Week goes to High Kicks. Them is some flexible women them is. I don't know why I slipped into that weird accent. I know why. Lyle in Mob Squad talks like that. It is amusing how much the internet now controls my thoughts and actions. Seriously though, check out their photo in the slideshow. I did, and I was there too.

Seriously though (even though everything I say in these blogs is 100% serious), don't forget to like the facebook page.

See you all next week! Same Bat time, same Bat place!

P.S. I'll let you guys know in the comments later about the status of the poor laptop.
