Jacy ()

Southern California native, Jacy grew up in Long Beach CA, where he learned how to survive surburbia in an old Volkswagen and slanging foam at chain coffee shops.  He later moved to Los Angeles proper to attend UCLA where he has a BA in History.  You can find him attending comedy shows, strange music venues, and eating a lot throughout Los Angeles.

Contrary to what we all wish it was called, it was actually called Informer.  But "Licky boom boom down" just rolls off the tongue…

There were a couple of problems last night, the biggest of which is that I have no idea how to pronounce "Seoul".  It's a lot of vowels in a small space.  Also I was told that I was not "Drunk Enough", which was probably true, but I have to do light math and keep this quiz on time.  You can tell the days that I have too much to drink because I get on stage and start talking about my personal life or other problems much more than usual.  And I've got drag queens that want to come on stage, I can't be doing the quiz all night.  I do always make sure to have an alcoholic beverage when I come on stage, it is Geeks who Drink, and make sure I'm getting comfortable at Hamburger Marys with the rest of the crowd.

That being said, it was another incredible night at Mary's last night.  From billiards rules, Dolly Parton, and the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, it was an eclectic mix of amazing subjects.

I succumbed to peer pressure again last night and played a song that was referenced, but this time went a lot better.  When it asked for the Canadian single  that stayed on the Billboard Top 100 twenty years ago by Snow I got my Spotify ready and queued up "Informer".  Unlike last week, people actually wanted to hear this song.  And liked it.

Round 2 on Mashups, those were fairly brilliant and had very high scores from a number of teams.  We also had Jerry, the Manager at Hamburger Mary's, saying loudly "Oh I love this Rod Stewart" when the song was playing.  The really fun part of Hamburger Mary's is you never know when or where the shouts are going to come from.  It could be a drunk at the bar who finally got a question they know, or it could be from the manager who knows the rules but just got really excited.  Always full of surprises.

Meryl Streep movies was great and led to a couple of perfect scores.   The cities round got a little tricky, but mostly for me pronouncing cities in Bolivia, or even just Canada.  Honestly, Regina should always be pronounced like Spektor, not to rhyme with female anatomy.

Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream was the theme for Round 7, name the celebrity that has his own flavor.  And you thought staring at the freezer section while stoned at Ralphs  trying to figure out which flavor you want wouldn't come in handy!

Round 8 was overshadowed by the great question, name 4 out of the 5 Zords from the first seasons of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.  We've had a few MMPR questions and every one of them is better than the last.

We had the incredible Call for a Good Time come in 3rd place.  I had to do a small edit for their name, it actually ended with my phone number, and I can't just give that out.  Queens of the North came in a very close second place, but was probably my favorite team name of the night.  And Champagne for my Real Friends, Real Pain for my Sham Friends came in first, beating the very stiff competition.  Big shout out to Turkish Spring Break, The NSA Took My Baby Away, and  Breaking Bard for playing a great game.

The Starlette Revue was very special last night, celebrating the birthdays for Dani Kay, Jewels, and Raja.  The show was a lot of fun rounding out the night with Sonique and old Top Chef contestant Arnold Myint now performing as Suzie Wong.  And Raja had a hat with her name on it… that changes everything.

I just drank a mocha way too fast.

See, because he has to say his name in crowded loud places, he makes the "Roar" hand movement when he says his name to make sure people understand him.  Otherwise, he says, people would call him "Whor-ey", which isn't' a name at all, and second, is people just wishing he was a Whore.  But that's enough about the host at Mary's, we are onto the quiz!

Round 1, state capitals was a fun round, we got to bring up Gilligan himself Bob Denver, who was way better when he starred as Maynard G Krebs, but thats just an obscure reference quizmasters get.  Also, most people were amazed that Olympia was Michael Dukakis' cousin, just another fun tidbit you can take home with you.  Also Salem the cat has a last name….

The first audio round was pretty great, in a normal night having Bon Jovi's greatest hit "Dead or Alive" and Van Halen's "Dreams" in one round would blow me away, but last night the ante was upped.  The best song you could ask for regarding bands named after a band member came on, Hanson's "Mmmbop"!  I really did karaoke that at my Senior Prom and failed miserably and basically gave up.  For years I was scared of karaoke because of that, I finally got over it by doing an amazing duet of "A Whole New World", but the scars are still there.

I found Round 3, the "I read a rap lyric you tell me if it was originally sung by a white or black singer" round, to be pretty great for a few reasons.  First you got to hear people in the audience say "that sounds pretty white" or even better "that's so white it could be black".  Second, I got to say Missy Elliot's greatest lyric "Beep Beep, who's got the keys to the jeep. Vroom".  I did push it a little too much and succumbing to the peer pressure I played the MC Frontalot song even though I should have known it was going to be terrible.

People did great in Rounds 4, 5, and 6.  People were complaining about the motorcycle round when it came up, but a majority of the teams got perfect scores.  A friend of mine came up to me after the quiz and wanted to talk about the Zip discs vs. CD-ROM question.  It ended with him calling the question "very tricky".

I hope everyone has seen the actual YouTube clip that Round 7 was based on, its pretty hilarious, just not great over the speakers at Mary's.

Round 8 was a good final round, bringing up Indiana Jones, Google buying up the internet, machine guns, and where rich companies are located.  The only question I think people found tricky was Pandora meaning "All-giving".

We had Sharks Are Awesome in 3rd place, which was the amazing player Lazer and his Mom!  Game of Crohn's Disease came in 2nd place (one of the teammates has that disease and wanted to be prideful of that on pride weekend) and The Stenographers came in first, to their disbelief.  A big shout out to teams that came close Hell's Kittens, Alcoholocaust, and Dude, Where are the Carrs (which was actually a couple that stood up the quizzers).

Starlette Revue was incredible with Jewels bringing the best West Hollywood stars on stage, including the future Vegas attraction Shannel.

For some reason or another (probably the Jack Daniels that I drank with a tiny bit of Coke) I could not talk last night.  At least I couldn't put the words in the correct order.  So everything that was jumbled last night was me and the words trying to get out of my mouth.  That being said, what a crazy quiz last night!  And I got to play one of the greatest songs ever made, "Danger Zone".

Just to let everyone know, I definitely judge my crowd by what questions the majority of teams get correct. Last night my judgement came from two different questions, first the "Is it a Buzzfeed feed?", people know that site, with due reason.  Second was the "What does the bartender add?" questions, that one was correct across the board.  Maybe the question was very straight forward?  Maybe its because we are in a bar?  Whatever it was, I'm sure my quizzers are a bunch of alcoholics.

The music rounds last night were great fun, a lot because of the amazing songs I got to play.  I was really really excited to play 'Danger Zone', man do I love Top Gun.  The other "Flying" songs were great; Jet, John Denver, and more.  There were a lot of high scores in that first round.

There was a small misunderstanding last night with Round 3, I said "Corn producing States", not Porn producing states… strangely enough though, I don't think that would change many of the answers.

I'm glad everyone understood the "Who is asking the question" round, because it was a lot of fun, especially because of the reference to The Incredible Mr. Limpet.

The best round last night was of course, Androgenhuh? where you had to say if the singer was a male or female, which is tricky.  We had Erasure, Boy George, and the creepy song from Silence of the Lambs!  When I read that round I knew I was going to love it.

A quick note on the perfect for Los Angeles question on Eric Garcetti; we all know this is a nation-wide quiz so that was being asked in places that may have not known that as well as we all did.  Just take the geographic advantage this time and hopefully you will complain less when I ask about South Carolina.  Also, because I live in Pico/Robertson, there was a lot of happiness with the first Jewish mayor.

We had Amanda Biders Full of Women come in 3rd place, Champagne for my Real Friends, Real Pain for my Sham Friends in 2nd, and We Met Online in first.  I want to say how much I love the name 'We Met Online' but I can't tell you why… I just do.  Maybe its the stigma, almost like a confession…  The problem was, it was a group of 6 and I wished it was a couple so much.  A special shout out to K-Town Kriminals who played a great game.  Shaun from Amanda Binders won the e-mail only question and walked out with a Visual Bob-ography of Bob Dylan.

Starlette Revue last night was incredible having the Vegas starlet Shannel headline with Laganja Estranja and Fontasia.  With those three, the costume brilliance in Mary's last night was over the top.
