Our first round, all about the WWF (even though we kept all of you in suspense until the bonus question) left me feeling very strong indeed. Yes, it's true that wrestlers engage in some pretty off the charts levels of kayfabe. Need proof? Though I'm not sure it beats the level of commitment Sean Connery must have had working next to Nicholas Cage in The Rock. You have to understand, to this point there had been no National Treasure, and Cage was not really considered an action star. He was known mostly for his exceptional role in Raising Arizona (I'm wondering, if he could do it all over again, if this is what he would choose.) Instead, Michael Bay made him an action hero and started the string of events that would eventually lead to both Ghost Rider and Tranformers 2. So despite the fact that the movie is pretty good, it can go fuck itself.
Round 2 was titled Bad English. Unfortunately, it was not an entire round dedicated to "melt with you" mashups. Instead, it was devoted to Brit's who had wound up on the wrong side of the law. While Paul McCartney probably tops the list of "most innocuous crimes" on this list, The MVP of the Scumbag league goes to Gary Glitter Hands down.
The best inclusion in our sooner or later round (in which we give you increasingly obvious lists of ways people died in a movie and the contestants give us the movie) was unquestionably Clue. Have you watched that movie recently? It is a murderer's row of the most talented character actors of the day. Including Christopher Lloyd, the greatest character actor ever. Anyone who brings us Doc Brown, Judge Doom, Fester Adams and Professor Plum deserves a whole wing of the acting hall of fame to himself.
Speaking of great character actors, let's talk about Anne Ramsey for a second (our fourth round certainly did.) While her starring role in Throw Mama From The Train may have let something to be desired, I have to admit that she TERRIFIED me in The Goonies. Mama Fratelli don't mess around even if she is trying to kill Rudy, Short Round and one of the lost boys. I still have nightmares.
Wawaweewa, were we in for a treat in our visual round. The round required us to identify classic beauties of yesteryear, so I hope you all ad an old pervert on your squad. Personally, I didn't know many of them by name, but now I've got some names to google image search. You know, for purely academic purposes...
Next our round on the rising economic powers of BRIC. Honestly, I didn't figure that Russia would be amongst the brightest new economies. For some reason, I thought the cold war completely destroyed their shit. Maybe I have been listening to too much Yakov Smirnov. Shows that I know very little outside of 80's movies I guess...
Except, I do know a bit about 90's television! I'll be honest, I was jealous that I had to present this round instead of compete in it. I felt like I've trained my whole life for something just to lose my opportunity over some bullshit. Now I know how Kurt Thomas must have felt, and I didn't even get to make Gymkata!*
*I'm sorry, this might be the most obscure reference packed blog post I have ever written. My apologies.
Nonetheless, we had a great quiz tonight and the spot was packed! Remember, no quiz next week, as the bar is closed, but hopefully everyone comes back with a vengence in a fortnight!

But I will, if that's what it takes! I'll tell you, until this quiz, I had no idea that the sentence "a man, a plan, a canal, Panama!" had any historical context. I thought it was just some gobbledegook our middle school teachers made up. That said, some teams still did pretty impressively, it was one of our higher scored rounds of the night.
We also had a round on delicious junk food. Now, I'm on a diet and trying to eat half way decently, which meant our "which came first" round was torture to get through. A meal containing a Whopper, cheetos, a Dr. Pepper and reese’s peanut butter cups sounds amazing. Plus, I get the added satisfaction of knowing I'm eating products with a longer standing tradition than a Big Mac, Doritos, Coke and a Snickers. What can I say, I'm old fashioned like that.
Under the heading of disappointing omissions, our round on magic and magicians did not contain a single nugget about GOB. Considering the world of excitement i am in over the return of Arrested Development, this seems to be an enormous oversight. The good news is that the show IS coming back, and we're in the final count down.
Our visual round was all about former kid stars who had grown up to show off their junk. I'm sure the ladies in the room were a little upset because all the child stars we included as correct answers in the round were women, so there was a shortage of celebrity dong(pun intended.) Didn't that little kid whose tongue got stuck on the pole in "A Christmas Story" grow up to do porn? I think he would have been a good addition.
Our music round was a good one, all song titles of Mariah Carey songs, performed by different artist. Sadly, we didn't even get a single Mimi song to wet our appetite. As everyone knows, the best Mariah Carey song is "Always Be My Baby." As a 13 year old boy when that video came out, I can tell you in all sincerity that they video with her swinging across a lake on a tire swing was very... formative to my development.
We had a hard fought war of a quiz, but in the end, two teams were left standing to battle it out for first place. After the first tie-break round failed to be decisive, the Beered Gamers narrowly beat out Pound Puppies Unite for the final prize. Congrats!

Apparently, translating porn for the blind is one of the worst jobs ever. At least if our second audio round was to be believed. Boy oh boy, i've never heard anyone who is as upset to be watching felatio as that guy.
Luckily, as we learned in our 1st round, most people are in agreement that emergency contraception should be made available to everyone, even those not yet old enough to make the horrible life decision to go down on someone on film. Speaking of going down, the wording of one of our questions about cannibalism kind of made the wait staff blush. Apparently, their minds go to a dirt place when they hear the phrase "chowed down on at least one teenage girl."
Our music round brought a lot of songs about carnivals, and lions and shit like that. For one team, the strategy to use was to just guess Britney Spears song Circus for half the answers. Lucky for you, you got one right! Unlucky for you, you got three wrong in the process.
Round three brought us questions on the Huntsman model of swiss army knife. To be frank, I didn't know they even made swiss army knives anymore. I thought they had long since been replaced by Lethermans (Lethermen?) and Gerbers. I suppose neutrality brings with it a kind of superior staying power.
Round 4 brought us a bunch of questions about allegedly terrible young people. While I can certainly get behind the cause of calling Justin Bieber and King Joffrey trrible young people, I take issue with us calling out Miley Cyrus. All she wants is to have a Party in the USA. Is that really too much to ask?
Regardless of what Miley wants, we certainly had a party last night, and last time i checked Minneapolis is still a part of the USA, so we accomplished her goals to a T. Remember to come on down and join the party again next week.
