Ken (Snarky Shark)

Hi Everyone,

This is Ken "Snarky Shark" Lindsay! I'm the current host of the GeeksWhoDrink Pubquiz over at the Blarney Stone, in downtown Seattle!

As for me, I'm pretty much a Seattlite. Sure, I've lived in California, Arizona, Washington, Idaho, but I definitely call this place my home. I dig the grunge scene and like the local legends Pearl Jam and Nirvana. However, I also dig a decent Irish jig (a shout out to Gaelic Storm, who do not visit Seattle enough!) , so the Blarney Stone has been ideal for me.

I got this gig to replace (impossible, I say!) Gentleman Johnny, the previous quizmaster, who happens to be a close friend of mine in real life! who would have thought? Personally, I dig science questions. Why? Well, in real life <le sigh> I'm a graduate student in the department of Biochemistry in the University of Washington. So, mixing pleasures is always fun. (Shaken not stirred, thankyouverymuch.)

I really enjoy the regular players, with their funny quirks, and the hopeful glean in the eyes of the newbies, who think they can win. (How quickly those hopes are shattered...) I'm always down for a pint with a friendly face, so if you ever want to talk, just let me know!

As for the moniker, "Snarky Shark", just wait until you are at the other end of the quiz. Don't know the answer? Oh, I'll know, I can smell the blood in the water...

Tonight, Snarky-shark was back!

We had six teams in total tonight.

Deep Fried Chow Mein made a good showing, coming in 4th place tonight,
rising above those in last place.

In the End, Shitter was Full took home third.

Nutbag took home 2nd and My Personal Favorite (That's their team name) FRAU won 1st place.

We're slowly getting back upto speed and what could possibly make this more interesting?
Perhaps a Bonus Questions Prize worthy of awesome Bonus Question answers?
Only one way to find out, next week, at the Blarney Stone!

Stephen ()

Stephen spent the first 24 years of life in northern Colorado, when a little tech company called Microsoft convinced him to try living in the Pacific Northwest.  After four years, he returned to Denver; but at the end of 2009 another little startup named Amazon lured him back to Seattle, and, as it so happens, he moved into a little place across the street from a place with a Wednesday night pub quiz.

After being a team player for a year and a half, Stephen took the plunge and auditioned for quizmastery.  He lives in lower Queen Anne with his lovely wife Laura and a psycho killer cocker spaniel from hell named Kuno.

Stephen here, acting as stand-in quizmaster while Ken is out of state.  I heard he was at working at an anthropomorphic environmentalist rally in Florida, pushing to change the official name of the manatee to the hewmanatee.

Well, that's what I HEARD.

I have to say, the Blarney Stone is one of my favorite quizzing establishments.  The last time I was here was as a player, almost a year ago.   The server, Heather, not only recognized me, but...

She even remembered what drink I had last time.

Oh, Em, Gee.  Here is my suggestion:  Tip that girl, and tip her good.  She is a KEEPER.

The teams at the Blarney Stone mean serious business.  You are intent, and deep in thought, and have an awesome presence at bonus question time.  Also, you are all apparently really good listeners; I didn't have to offer up a single repeat until Round 4, and I'm pretty sure that was just to stall for time.

That doesn't mean you're not liberal with your interpretation of the rules, though.  One team attempted to joker FOUR TIMES.  Nice try, you free-pub-quiz scofflaw, but my Mega-Awesome Scoring Spreadsheet of Doom refused to allow that to happen.   I may only be a guest Quizmaster, but I HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY.

Karma bites even those of us with the microphone, though.  I planned to point out the joker offender in a satisfying mean and petty way; then out came my own faux pas while giving Round 7 answers, calling Natalie Portman "Anakin Skywalker's mom".  Meant Luke, said Anakin, and hung my head in shame all the way home.  So the multi-joker team will remain unnamed; my snarky comment will remain unspoken, and the balance of the world is restored.

Things you knew about: songs with spelling in them, video games with words replaced, and random knowledge.

Things you wish you knew: Gibson-vs-Busey factoids and fantasy islands.

Great quiz you got going here, Blarney Stoners!  Keep up the good work.

The Blarney Stone showed what it's made of, most games shows and entertaining digital
diversions. The night start off at a nadir, with few getting the clues for "It's not
east being Green." Though, most of them new, "Behind the Green Door." Go figure.

The game was fairly close throughout the night, but in the end was decided by careful use
of the Joker, with Shitter was Full coming from behind. I mean, Shocking from the rear.
Oh dear, I mean splooging forth into the Face of those previously first...

I wasn't go to get out of this without an innuendo, was I?

A Third place tie between "Mind your own Quizness" and "Jigglytuffs" was settled via Ro-Sham-Bo.
I had to quickly intervene to remind them that it had nothing to do with South Park, but rather
Rock-Paper-Scissors. Considering both teams sent their female counter-parts to battle, I can
see they have no shame in the strategery department.

Will I ever not be surprised by these lovable louts?

Probably.

What they did well in:
3: A Lifetime Supply of Lee-Press On Nails!
6: Start, Application, Games

What they Sucked at:
1: It's not easy being Green
5: Visual Round: Bonfire of the Vanity Plates

Will, we see a Dance off, rather than a Ro-Sham-Bo, to settle the tie? Will FRAU return
to settle the score, or at least place? and what the hell am I doing in Florida?
Only one way to find out, Next Time! At the Blarney Stone!
