We had a team which called themselves Riders of Brohan tonight and I made it my Funniest Team Name Award winner because over the weekend it just so happened that I watched The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with my girlfriend. Boy was it terrible. Now, don’t get me wrong, I liked those other Lord of the Rings movies and therein lays the problem with The Hobbit. It spends close to all of its almost three-hour long running time foreshadowing events from Lord of the Rings regulating the main story to the backseat. While a few references are to be expected this comes across as being ashamed of this movie and wanting you to remember the other ones. It is trying to sell you something you have already bought.

The film does have its moments (mainly coming from Martin Freeman) but all those are overshadowed by cartoonish buffoonery, “hey-kids-3D!” nonsense, or self-indulgence into unnecessary back story. If you want a good movie version of The Hobbit, check out the 1977 cartoon version. Honestly, this isn’t just nostalgia talking, the acting, character development; music, singing, and pacing are all superior. Another plus is that it tells the world story in 90 minutes without feeling like you missed anything as opposed to getting a quarter of the story in 170 minutes.

Anyway, back in the real world, we had a very close quiz with a couple of ties. First, we had a tie between Wyld Stallynz and We Got Bacon Stylz for third place. A harrowing match of rock-paper-scissors got We Got Bacon Stylz into the bronze. Also, The Virgin Surgeons and Riders of Brohan had to go through a sudden death match to break the first place tie with Riders of Brohan coming out on top.

James’ Funniest Answer Award goes to Plan B is Ctrl+Z for Nerds for their answer to Round 4 Question 1: “This sentence was created specifically as what kind of wordplay device?” of “The fuck you talking about?” (Correct answer: Palindrome. The sentence is question was A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!)

We had a very close quiz last night at Southtown 101 as we cheered our San Antonio Spurs on to victory. We also had some ornithologists in there among our quizzers. When I read that the answer for Round 5 Question 4 was “Take it Easy by The Eagles”, team Any Which Way but Lose gave out a thunderous cheer. I assumed that they were just big Don Henley fans. However, when I read that the answer for Round 6 Question 7 was “The Seattle Seahawks”, once again team Any Which Way but Lose belted out a booming shout. It was at that point I figured that they were simply fans of birds.

James’ Funniest Team Name Award: Sons of Inquiry

James’ Funniest Answer Award goes to Cantina for their answer to Round 8 Question 2: “What are the first names of the two alleged Boston bombers?” of “Asshole #1 and Asshole #2” (Correct answer: Dzhoukhar and Tamerian)

Last night we celebrated one year of Geeks Who Drink at Southtown 101! We had noisemakers, balloons, drinks, special bonus prizes for team who turned in their answer sheets early, and I gave out candy for funny answers throughout the night.

A special shout-out to team One Year Older, One Year Wiser, Still Full of Bacon for the “birthday” presents they gave me, which you can see to the left (It’s bacon soda and bacon popcorn!).

I want to thank the management and staff of Southtown 101, as well as all my regular teams for making Southtown 101 a great place to host a quiz each and every week. Here’s looking forward to another awesome year!

James’ Funniest Answer Award: There were far too many to list here.
