Longtime quizzer, newbie quizmaster. Music nut and lover of queer/feminist sci-fi in all of its forms. KCMO is now my home, although I claim Arkansas as my root. I've got lots of nicknames and if you come up with one I like, I might add it to the list.

Monday is always full of lots of emotions, anxiety, anticipation, angst. No wonder so many people break into tears with all that stewing around at the start of the week. Quiz is also full of emotions and high hopes. The one emotion I know that we share is that we love quizzing on Monday and everyone bring’s their A game to the table. Tonight everyone brought it. All of it! So many ties and close calls!

Our teams are pretty smart about their music and tonight they took it to a whole new level. Six, count ‘em, six perfect scores and no team scored lower than ten for the round. That made for a very close quiz. So many ties. Highlight of the round was the final clip of the round which really did sound like orgasmic screaming, but it was just Eddie Vedder’s isolated vocals from Jeremy. He really might sound like that in the throws of ecstasy. I also was made angry by a Foo Fighters clip. It doesn’t matter what song it was although it was Everlong, they all make me angry in general. Still not sure why. But we all agreed that Freddie Mercury could really sing. Like really sing.

Nothing says fun like knitting, knots and bondage. It’s like a hipster kink party, sort of. Tonight’s Round 6 covered a lot of ground and everyone found it a little challenging with our lowest scoring round of the night with an average of just under four points for the round. Things we learned included that a hangman’s noose is a knot, hemp is used in Japanese rope bondage, shibari is a type of Japanse rope bondage, and we all need re-watch Exit to Eden because Rosie O’Donnel and Dan Akroyd in bondage wear, yes! And while Dan Akroyd did dress in goat pants and a mohawk in Dragnet to infiltrate a satanic cult, it doesn’t qualify as bondage wear. And Tom Hanks is no Rosie O’Donnel. Thank goodness for that!

Going into the final round there was a four way tie for first place which created a lot of tension and extreme focus in the room. It was tough random knowledge round for everyone. In the end, we had more ties! Exodus: The Whitewashing of Egypt and Vaganis Joplin were tied for first place. Three more teams, Animatronic Grandma, Greenpeace Crossed the Line, and Please Daddy, Quiz on My Face were also tied for the third place spot.

First, we started the sudden death round to decide who would be number one with a five question sudden death round. While they were arguing amongst themselves about answers, beers were poured for a drink off for third place and it was super close. Animatronic Grandma just edged out Greenpeace Crossed the Line and took home more beer from the Green Room to celebrate their drinking prowess.

Then it was time to sort out the winner. We came down to the final question and the teams were tied again with three correct answers. Everything was resting on one last question and which team knew the author of Tess of the d'Urbervilles. And that team was…Exodus: The Whitewashing of Egypt and they took home first place with that answer. Vaganis Joplin took home second place which ain’t shabby at all given all this competition.

And Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh-kins came up with my favorite name for the night and I don't even like Christmas themed stuff.

I don’t know if I can take this much excitement every week, but I’ll be back next week with my Fuck Christmas playlist to give it a try. Got a request? Bring it to quiz or send it to me on Facebook and I’ll try to add it to the mix.

Thank you all for a great night of quizzing.  You're each special and let's do it again soon.

Longtime quizzer, newbie quizmaster. Music nut and lover of queer/feminist sci-fi in all of its forms. KCMO is now my home, although I claim Arkansas as my root. I've got lots of nicknames and if you come up with one I like, I might add it to the list.

Last week our little bar was the top venue for Geeks Who Drink in the whole damn country! That’s fantastic and shows that not only do we have some of the best quizzers around, but some of the smartest ones, too. Makes me proud to be your quizmaster each week! Keep up all the good work!

This week’s audio round was right in my sweet spot. Drum fills…ON REPEAT! I’ve always had a thing for drummers and I am beyond happy that one of my fave bands is coming back which means that I get to see Janet of Sleater Kinney put down the beat for Sleater Kinney in 2015. But enough about my obsessions, drum fills on repeat can get a little repetitive and they just kinda sound odd. Most teams recognized the drumming of Dave Grohl from Nirvana, but had trouble pinning down the right song. Same thing with the Green Day number. Although one team thought that was Rancid and for that Lars Frederiksen will be wanting to  kick your ass so watch out. One team enjoyed the opening fill from Watching the Detectives as much as I did and got both right. Animatronic Grandma rocked the round with an almost perfect fifteen and a joker to jump out to an early lead.

Sometimes our round themes can be a little morbid, but tonight’s Racing to the Grave round took that to a whole new level. Out of three options, teams had to pick the one that kicked the bucket first. That was a 33.3% chance of picking the right answer. Those 50/50 rounds are starting to look like a good option, eh? I also got to gush about my childhood love of Andy Gibb. No, really. I had a t-shirt with his face on it and everything. I loved watching him on the Solid Gold. Memories.

Last night’s Round 7 was quite the challenge and teams struggled to identify the Archer guest star from the audio clips. Even if you watch Archer a lot, it was tough. If you asked me what Archer was, then it was near impossible. Average for the round was three points. Shitter is Full got six points for the high score for the round. Also that was Burt Reynolds, NOT Tom Selleck. Yes, both have mustache, but they are not even in the same league, people. And who in the hell is Jon Hamm. Nobody at quiz knew last night and I can’t blame them for that. I was also surprised that none of the teams thought that was Jack Nicholson since it was Christian Slater who has made his career out of impersonating Jack.

Animatronic Grandma jumped out early and held on tight to end up on top and take home a $30 gift certificate from Green Room Burgers and Beer. Urethra Franklin and My Nose tied for second and it was time for a Rock Paper Scissor tiebreaker. It was close, but Urethra Franklin came out on top for second and a $20 gift certificate to enjoy at Green Room Burgers and Beer. My Nose won the beer bounty of a Papa Louie Growler and a bottle of Repent Rye to enjoy.

Want to take your team's quiz domination to a whole new level? Geek Bowl 9 is coming up on February 7th and with over $12,000 in prizes you will want to be there! Tickets go on sale Wednesday, December 10. Go to www.geekswhodrink.com to find out more information.

Thank you all for a great night of quizzing.  You're each special and let's do it again soon.

December 1st is more than just the first day of the last month of the year. Today marks World AIDS Day and can be a somber day of remembrance of so many that have been lost and the impact this awful disease has had on the arts. To mark the day and celebrate instead, we listened to lots of Queen, the good, the bad and the blah. And since I said that mistakenly that we were recognizing Eddie Murphy’s contributions to the world instead of Freddie Mercury, we went off the rails early. But we bounced right back and had a stellar high scoring quiz with great prizes from Tallgrass Brewing Company to make the masses happier. We also had passes and posters for the new movie Top Five…yeah for Rosario Dawson!

Tonight’s music consisted of a hodgepodge of fine songs, except for maybe number 7, but that’s just me. That Small Talks song with it’s all of its fake horns and heying. Ugh. But tonight’s teams REALLY liked this round because they racked up some high scores including a perfect jokered round for Too Soon for An AIDS Joke? Another team hit fifteen points and two more scored fourteen. Each clip featured a song with an instrumental take on the song’s melody, but that wasn’t fooling anyone tonight. Several songs also brought back found childhood memories for me. Seeing Hall and Oates on the Big Bam Boom tour as a kid for my birthday and watching that Centerfold video over and over again on MTV. Good times indeed.

The majesty of tonight’s music round was counteracted by the difficulties of a timed round. Pretty straightforward question, give me the last name of the characters featured in a long running TV show for eight actors. High score for the round was five points with most teams hitting the four point mark. Many folks probably knew that Roseanne’s last name on Roseanne was Conner and that Woody’s last name on Cheers was Boyd, but they just couldn’t pull it out of the memory banks. No one in the house was a big NewsRadio fan though so Joe’s last name, Garrelli, was a learning moment that we probably won’t remember. And who even knew that the Mystery Science Theater 3000 characters had last names…not me. For future reference, Joel’s last name is Robinson. Somebody might remember that in the future, but it probably won’t be me.

Too Soon for an AIDS Joke? took the lead and never looked back with a kickass score of 87 to take first place and a $30 gift certificate from Green Room Burgers and Beer. Urethra Franklin returned to battle their way into second place and a really going to enjoy all that great Tallgrass Brewing beer from those really lovely schooner glasses in their victory celebration. Animatronic Grandma took home third place tonight and a $20 gift certificate to enjoy at Green Room Burgers and Beer. RIP Mercury, Queen of Rock didn’t win quiz, but won my heart with my favorite team name for the night.

Thank you all for a great night of quizzing.  You're each special and let's do it again soon.
