Longtime quizzer, newbie quizmaster. Music nut and lover of queer/feminist sci-fi in all of its forms. KCMO is now my home, although I claim Arkansas as my root. I've got lots of nicknames and if you come up with one I like, I might add it to the list.

The signs of fall are here: overpaid grown men are chasing an oddly shaped ball while other grown men yell at them, kids head back to school, and everything has a pumpkin flavored option. All of these things have one thing in common for me…I don’t give a fuck about any of them. I enjoy cussing, but I firmly believe that you should used it carefully. If you just throw an f-bomb out there all the time, then it loses its impact. So I reserve it for special occasions, but there seem to be quite a few each night. It’s part of my charm, I guess. Or not.

This week’s music round proved to be pretty easy and pretty awful. Football parodies, huh? I guess some people have some time on their hands and this is how they put it to use. From an incredibly painful rendition of Wrecking Ball involving a shotgun and tackling to an awful version of Everything I Do (I Do For You) with a super cheesy violin part. I did do a double take on the Born to Run parody which was actually quite good despite its football theme. I almost thought I was playing the wrong song at first. I can appreciate that level of commitment even if I have no idea what the sporty lyrics are trying to convey to me. Many teams did very well with a perfect 16 point round and three teams with 15 point rounds. And so many jokers were used that we had some high scores at the break. Nice job, quizzers!

v we moved on to a 50/50 round of quotes from two English women who really know some shit, Queen Elizabth and Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey. This proved to be a fun round and many teams did pretty well. And I would have to agree with Liz that her family has its share of eccentricities, impetuous and wayward youngsters and family disagreements. She must also be seen to be believed, like a unicorn. I’m not sure if this round proved that either of these ladies know shit, but both of them have more power and money than most of us will ever have. I guess that’s some good shit.

My quizzers tonight have some good taste in film and that came through in Round 7, featuring the best and worst films from the same year. Most of tonight’s quizzers knew the Oscar winners, but struggled with the Razzie winners. From an irresistible duck from outer space to the thrusting of Showgirls, we all struggled along. Then we closed out with a Sandra Bullock duo. I had forgotten that she had indeed won an Oscar and a Razzie in 2009. I thought she deserved one of the awards and probably a few more. I’m just not a Bullock fan. Gravity was a pretty movie, but if aliens showed up I would much rather have Ripley from Alien. I’m just cranky like that, I guess.

#RayPrice’sNextPaycheck barely held on to the lead to take first place and a $30 gift certificate. Isis Bucket Challenge took second place and $20 to spend at Green Room Burgers and Beer. Hodor Hodor Hodor hung on to third place to take home the beer prize which included a lovely bottle of Boulevard’s Two Jokers Double Wit.

September is now upon us and Labor Day marks the end of summer fun and the return of fall. In Kansas City, that meant some rain on a Monday and some tough questions for our quizzers. Welcome to all the new faces in the house tonight. Hope to see ya’ll back soon for some more quizzing fun at Green Room Burgers and Beer.

Our music round was tough and featured theme songs from Fox TV shows old and new. If I were looking for the name of the show, I think teams would have fared better. I needed the title and artist though for those precious points and a lot of teams struggled. Most teams got at least half right. Only one team did well with a joker and 13 points. Tough stuff on that round.

Timed rounds can be fun. The added pressure of limited time and a buzzer also make people freak out. Ask them about top grossing movies with one word titles, and people really stress out. Even though I warned everyone that all of the answers were from the last decade, a couple of teams threw in Jaws. While a great movie, it’s a bit older than that. We also learned again that animated kids movies rake in the dough with 4 of the 12 answers  falling into that category, Frozen, Ratatouille, Tangled, and Up. Kids want to see them multiple times and that means money.

Tonight’s audio round was a visual round that came across as an audio round and something got lost in the translation. The clips featured movies that used long tracking shots which doesn’t translate too well into an audio clip. Many teams did pretty well although no one picked up on that clip from Atonement. Since it closed out with The Shining, I guess I’ll forgive whoever wrote that round. Maybe.

Animatronic Grandma stormed into first place to claim a $30 gift certificate. Make Smart Choices and The BBC ended up in a tie for second which meant that they must throw down in a rock paper scissor challenge. The drama was high, but it only took 2 throws for Make Smart Choices to come out on top with two rocks to two scissors. The BBC took home a four pack of Tallgrass Zombie Monkey, some Tallgrass beer coozies, and a huge bottle of Founder’s Imperial IPA.

For the final Monday night to earn Rumble in the Pub points, we had a pretty full house of teams and lots of fresh, new faces. After one of the hottest days this summer, we all made it through alive and all of the delicious beer at Green Room Burgers and Beer had to help.  But what happened at quiz, here’s the recap.

All of tonight’s music selections included a reference to MTV. From one of the first, Dire Strait’s Money for Nothing, to the relatively obscure, Beck’s MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack, we took a tour through a time when MTV still showed music videos and you could get your chicks for free. But then it went to crap and now it’s all pseudo reality shows and the VMA’s. I guess we all get our music videos through YouTube, at least for a little while longer, so we don’t need to see them on MTV. But I digress…With four teams scoring 14 points and most of them jokering, they made out like point bandits on that one.

The dreaded higher or lower round returned to wreak havoc. Tonight it brought back the horrors of those junior high test questions that required you to get the first question right to calculate the rest of the questions. Screw up that first one and you’re screwed. On this one, you only had two choices so it wasn’t that dire, but it turned out to be pretty challenging with the average score being 3 points. But we got through it together and I guess that counts for something. Right?

Everybody loves a good revenge movie and everyone rocked our final audio category of the night. Remind me to stay on everyone’s good side at quiz, because there is no telling what ya’ll have learned and might bust out on me. Good thing I’m not in charge of scoring this shit. Oh, there’s that. Nevermind.

Great Job! rose to the top of the quiz heap to claim first. Not 2 Erly 4 Pumpkin Bier swooped in to take home second for the night. Sassafrasquatch hung on for third and took home a bottle of Boulevard’s Tow Jokers Wit and Perennial’s Woodside Tripel with Honey Ale to enjoy.
