I prefer chai tea to coffee, love the Golden Girls, am obsessed with KU basketball, and always put the toilet paper roll on backwards.

Sometimes I have to sound out "wed-nes-day".

I always love subbing.

What I love about it is not knowing what you’re walking in to, kind of like that damn box of chocolates.

Will the audio work like they said? Will the crowd tolerate me? Will this group appreciate the eclectic music selection? It’s all a crapshoot. But in a fun way.

Some teams like Green Bowl Packers are very welcoming and compliment the sub QM on their music selection. (Doesn’t sound like much, but they know a dude who works at a super awesome radio station that I happen to listen longer to all the time.) These are the best kind of teams. Others like Urethra Franklin are equally as kind and carry on as if nothing has changed. Even allowing the guest QM to use their plug and they help pass along sheets to help out the flow of traffic. Oh, and break the top 5 for the night. Such hospitality.

A team or two will have to be reassured that this isn’t your first rodeo—that you in fact have quizzed before. Make a joke here or there, but time will only tell. Hopefully 3 Men and a Lady appreciated the teensiest bit of humor I brought to the tiny, round table up front!

Then you have your sticklers. You can tell that your mere presence has thrown off their game. They’re nervous and a little twitchy, but are willing to put up with you for the evening. Questioning your break schedule. If I can hold it for three rounds, so can you.

What’s also great about subbing is not knowing who you’ll see. Could be that one of your favorite (or least favorite) people in the whole world quizzes there and you had no idea! That’s why it was so serendipitous that The Bilbo Bimbos were there and one of my faves joined them whilst rocking a stylish mustache.

So even though the audio sitch got off to a shaky start, Chris from the BOH was a trooper and saved the day with his savvy technological skills andRob Ford’s Fake Cancer was gracious enough to come back inside to hear the quiz all night. It worked in their favor, they did score second place! Not too shabby for a quiet-ish evening indoors. And it was a pretty close game. Only one point separated them and the Basic Bitches. But it was the Basic Bitches who took that top spot and beat out this lively crowd by one point (and snagged a bonus question right out the gate).

All in all, it was a solid substitution night. Quizzers all around are a great group of people—weird, excited, and smart as hell.

I’d be happy to come back anytime, if you’ll have me.

Monday brings another night of great quizzing at Green Room Burgers and Beer. Rookies looking to take home first place and seasoned players out show them it’s not that easy. While everyone had a good time, there can only be one winner at the end of the night.

This week’s music round featured women covering songs originally done my men. While some were tough to pick out, others were awful abominations that should never really have happened. That Cher cover of U2’s I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For was something that can’t be unheard once it happens and I really have to apologize to all of you for torturing you with it. Really, I’m sorry that I had to go through it as well. Several teams picked up on the gambling themes in one of the songs, but couldn’t pick out who did the original song. Nope, it wasn’t Kenny Rogers’ The Gambler. Kinda close, but not really. I think Lemmy would be sad that they confused Motorhead’s Ace of Spades with Mr. Rogers’ little ditty. But, hey, nobody said quizzing was easy. Animatronic Grandma rocked a perfect score with a joker and several teams also did quite well.

Remember that series of questions from those high school tests that each built on each other and, if you missed the first one, you were totally screwed? Well, we had a variation on that with a series of questions in which the answer for each one can be found in the previous question, except for the first one, of course. But saying that Yes, It’s That Easy was a bit of an overstatement though. With no one scoring more than six points for the round, it was certainly not that easy.

Heading into round seven, I got a little excited that it might be a porn parody audio round, but quickly realized that Private Parts meant something completely different. Each clip featured an enlisted guy getting his ass chewed out and teams had to name the movie or series. Don’t get me wrong, it was still a good time, but a round on porn parody movies seems like a good idea. It might be hard to find a clip that helps to identify the original movie that does’t have a lot of heavy breathing and moaning. But I think it could work.

Basic Bitches showed everyone who it was done by taking home first place with an impressive 83 points and took home a $30 gift certificate for their hard work. Urethra Franklin took second place and $20 to spend at Green Room Burgers and Beer. A tie between Animatronic Grandma and My What A Big Knitted Penis You Have Grandma lead to a drink off between the grandma teams. In this round, Grandma’s Penis triumphed in the beer race for third and took home the beer prize which included a lovely bottle of Boulevard’s Two Jokers Double Wit. To see the showdown, check out the video here. And if you would like to know more about why My What A Big Knitted Penis You Have Grandma picked that name, check out that story here and go see it in person at UMKC's Art Gallery. It’s a hand on penistravaganza!

The signs of fall are here: overpaid grown men are chasing an oddly shaped ball while other grown men yell at them, kids head back to school, and everything has a pumpkin flavored option. All of these things have one thing in common for me…I don’t give a fuck about any of them. I enjoy cussing, but I firmly believe that you should used it carefully. If you just throw an f-bomb out there all the time, then it loses its impact. So I reserve it for special occasions, but there seem to be quite a few each night. It’s part of my charm, I guess. Or not.

This week’s music round proved to be pretty easy and pretty awful. Football parodies, huh? I guess some people have some time on their hands and this is how they put it to use. From an incredibly painful rendition of Wrecking Ball involving a shotgun and tackling to an awful version of Everything I Do (I Do For You) with a super cheesy violin part. I did do a double take on the Born to Run parody which was actually quite good despite its football theme. I almost thought I was playing the wrong song at first. I can appreciate that level of commitment even if I have no idea what the sporty lyrics are trying to convey to me. Many teams did very well with a perfect 16 point round and three teams with 15 point rounds. And so many jokers were used that we had some high scores at the break. Nice job, quizzers!

v we moved on to a 50/50 round of quotes from two English women who really know some shit, Queen Elizabth and Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey. This proved to be a fun round and many teams did pretty well. And I would have to agree with Liz that her family has its share of eccentricities, impetuous and wayward youngsters and family disagreements. She must also be seen to be believed, like a unicorn. I’m not sure if this round proved that either of these ladies know shit, but both of them have more power and money than most of us will ever have. I guess that’s some good shit.

My quizzers tonight have some good taste in film and that came through in Round 7, featuring the best and worst films from the same year. Most of tonight’s quizzers knew the Oscar winners, but struggled with the Razzie winners. From an irresistible duck from outer space to the thrusting of Showgirls, we all struggled along. Then we closed out with a Sandra Bullock duo. I had forgotten that she had indeed won an Oscar and a Razzie in 2009. I thought she deserved one of the awards and probably a few more. I’m just not a Bullock fan. Gravity was a pretty movie, but if aliens showed up I would much rather have Ripley from Alien. I’m just cranky like that, I guess.

#RayPrice’sNextPaycheck barely held on to the lead to take first place and a $30 gift certificate. Isis Bucket Challenge took second place and $20 to spend at Green Room Burgers and Beer. Hodor Hodor Hodor hung on to third place to take home the beer prize which included a lovely bottle of Boulevard’s Two Jokers Double Wit.
