Sometimes words are hard. When combined with sports, they can be especially brutal. It’s the time of year when all we hear about is the big sportsball bowl and who will win. I fall into that group who are more excited about the commercials and what kind of snacks people are gonna bring. Tonight’s quiz featured a bit more sportsball than usual, but we all made it through ok and the one person on your team who is sporty had their time to shine.

Tonight we saw the return of the timed round which combined language and sports in a way that many teams found challenging. Everyone agrees that alliteration is fun although not everybody knows what it is. Tempting teams to pull up sports teams from their memory banks that are alliterative was a tough task. Some teams forgot that L and A are not the same letter so Los Angeles Lakers didn’t quite fit. We also learned that people in Pennsylvania love this shit…Pittsburg Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies. Fucking fantastic! Florida rocked the round as well with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Miami Marlins. Totally tubular! Ok, enough already!

Going into our final round, we had a tie between Animatronic Grandma and Urethra Franklin so Round 8 was the deciding factor. In situations like this, small mistakes can make or break you. In the end, it was close, but Animatronic Grandma squeezed those two extra points from Round 8 to take home the win. Urethra Franklin wrapped up in second. Let's Talk About Gronk's Balls Instead got pumped up in the final round to land in third and take home the beer bounty.

Our first ever Friends theme quiz is Thursday, January 29th. The whole show is on Netflix, so call in sick and get studying. Go to www.geekswhodrink.com to find out more information.

Thank you all for a great night of quizzing. You're each special and let's do it again soon.

Monday’s crowd was small, but mighty tonight. Quiz kept them all on their toes tonight and it was a close race to see who would come out on top. Even the tiebreaker was a squeaker!

Our music round introduced us to the horrors of a cappella cover songs. Some were more humorous than terrifying really. Although if I were David Bowie, I’d have to take some kind of action against whoever created that dreadful cover of Space Oddity. And as much as I don’t want to like her, Taylor Swift just might win me over someday with her terribly catchy pop songs. Imagine Dragons made another quiz appearance for like the third week in a row so somebody at HQ really likes them. But the highlight of the round was the a cappella version of September complete with vocal splash cymbals and some really nice harmonies. Several teams couldn’t get enough as I heard them singing the song through out the night. Both Animatronic Grandma and Great Job! put up a perfect score with a joker to jump out in front of the pack.

Sometimes at quiz, we have a 50/50 round and there’s a few teams that wish we didn’t. But tonight, we threw an extra option in to annoy them even more for a 33/33/33 round. Teams had to determine if the answer was closest to 1000, one million or one billion. People were calculating volume and writing in scientific notation and stressing out about the size of an average human. Despite all the moaning and groaning, everyone did pretty well and we learned some new things. There’s a lot of farmland being cultivated in the US. Despite there being over 4 billion $100 printed in the US, I hadn’t seen very many of them in my pocket in 2013. And you need a lot more honeybees to equal the weight of the average human than you might think.

When we wrapped up, two of our regular teams were in a dead tie for first place so we broke out the sudden death tiebreaker. Even that was close with, Urethra Franklin taking the tiebreaker by only one question for the win. Great Job! took home second place. Animatronic Grandma fought off newcomers Don’t Give It Away for Free to take home third and the beer bounty.

Many geeks might find some comfort in putting these three things together. In fact, it might sound like an awesome Saturday night of fun that ends great, if the begging works out, but I’ll leave that to ya’ll to decide. Tonight’s quiz was challenging and it was a fight to the finish with our final round determining our winner.

Tonight’s audio round involved pleading, begging, and longing. All of the songs featured some sort of element of desperation. From the Please Please Me of the Beatles to Pink’s Please Don’t Leave Me, there was all manner of needy desires. The master of longing and unrequited longing closed out the round. If you couldn’t guess who that was, then you should go back and listen to every Smiths’ album in chronological order. That is a man who always sang about never getting what he wanted, but I suspect that he made out pretty well with anyone he took a liking to. I really wish I still had that cassette of their first album. As Morissey crooned…Please, please, please let me get what I want tonight. Indeed!

Despite all that begging and pleading, tonight’s audio round was a tough one and our quizdoku round all about video games threw many teams into fits. Math and video games equalled a challenging round. Animatronic Grandma and Urethra Franklin both racked up perfect scores and kept them close to the top of the leaderboard early in the quiz. I was happy that I wasn’t forced to try to answer those questions.

Tonight’s quiz came down to the final round and a well placed joker. With the best score on the final round of thirteen and a joker, Urethra Franklin took first place and the win.  In our usual competitive fashion, we ended with a tie for second place between Chuck Bought a Vacuum and Great Job! Each team sent forth a representative to battle for second in a grueling Rock.Paper.Scissor challenge. Great Job! came out on top to take second and Chuck Bought a Vacuum took home third and the beer bounty.
