Longtime quizzer, newbie quizmaster. Music nut and lover of queer/feminist sci-fi in all of its forms. KCMO is now my home, although I claim Arkansas as my root. I've got lots of nicknames and if you come up with one I like, I might add it to the list.

Spring was busting out all over last night at quiz and I was happy to share so much fun with a great bunch of quizzers. Everyone was frisky and ready to kick some quiz ass, but I had a few surprises in store for everyone tonight. How did that all work out for us...on to the recap!

This week's music round threw us all for a loop by switching up the game a bit. Instead of one song title, teams had to name two from the mashed up music clip. I thought the artist part was pretty easy, but apparently lots of people get DMX and Ja Rule mixed up. Lots. We also ran into some song title parenthetical issues that caused a few teams to miss the mark on that James Brown title. That man loves some strange song titles, but he's a little strange and that's what makes his music so damn good. With a tough round, Great Job! topped all teams with an 11 point round. Whew, that was rough.

We did have lots of fun with a movie name mashup round that brought lots of chuckles from everyone. Who doesn't enjoy combining Wes Anderson and Tutsi genocide into the compelling and fantastical The Grand Budapest Hotel Rwanda. And combining Michael J. Fox's wolfy explorations with snorting coke off a hooker's ass can only be Teen Wolf of Wall Street. Most teams rocked that round and the pain of a rough music round began to fade away.

With a tough music round, lots of teams decided to save their joker for the final round and that made all the difference. Two teams scored 15 points on that final round, but only one had saved their joker. Turd Cruz and the Republican Id jumped ahead of the pack to take first place. Imagine: The New Performance by Ted Cruz: The Scent of Desperation saved that joker and clawed their way into second. There's Always Money in the Banana Stand finished strong and took home the third place prize of a bottle of Boulevard Chocolate Ale and Julian Cherry Bomb cider.

We're pleased to announce that our next theme quiz will boldly go where no quiz has gone before. Join us for Resistance is Futile: A Star Trek Quiz on Saturday 3/28 in select Geeks Who Drink venues nationwide. You can RSVP and find all the details here: http://bit.ly/GWDStarTrek

Thank you all for a great night of quizzing. You're each special and let's do it again soon.

This week marked my first year quiziversary at Green Room Burgers and Beer. What does that mean? I've not done anything so bad that I've gotten fired. None of the lovely quizzers have complained about me enough to get me fired. You like me, you really really like me! It also meant that I brought cake for everyone because this fat kid loves cake. It seems that everyone else likes cake because it all disappeared which is wonderful. Thanks for a wonderful year and I'm looking forward to great things to come. On to quiz!

Everyone learned about the difference between Vanilla Ice and Val Kilmer in our The Icemen Cometh round. What's the difference? I'm still not sure to be honest. We now know which one tickled Lou Reed because he needed it.  We also know who enjoys watching the buffalo roam and just bought some so he could do it whenever he wanted. That would be Val Kilmer if you were wondering. He posed naked in Madonna's coffee table Sex book and pulled a pistol on a homeless dude who tried to sell him some jewelry. That is Vanilla Ice all day long. Now we're all clear on that one!

We had a tough fight for the top spot and it came down to the wire. Cer-vix A-lot had a slim lead, but squeezed out enough points for first place prize. Animatronic Grandma fought hard, but ended up in second by the slimmest of margins. March Sadness are not looking foward to all the basketball madness to come, but fought their way into third place and the beer/cider/t-shirt bounty for the night.

Yesterday was International Women's Day so tonight's quiz featured all the women, at least in the playlist. I like to think of everyday as International Women's Day although the patriarchy often reminds me that it is not the case. Someone also reminded me that due to Daylight Savings Time, we were shortchanged with only 23 hours for this year's day, at least in the US. I like to think that this was just a reminder about the pay gap between men and women, but it was probably just another attempt by the man to keep us women down. But enough of my feminist diatribe, on to the quiz!

Our music round theme of He Said She Said proved to be challenging and most teams decided to save those jokers for later. Others leaned heavily on their knowledge of En Vogue and Carrie Underwood to jump out to an early lead. Dude Nectar and Doone's Imaginarium got the high score for the round at 13. Everyone knew that one song was The Beatles, but getting that song title wasn't as easy. 5 homos and a straight shooter showed off their oldies knowledge by nailing the group who sang He's So Fine, the fluffy light Chiffons. Nice work overall by everyone!

I'm not sure if it was in honor of International Women's Day, but that round all about vagina and teeth proved entertaining to everyone. I now have two things to add to my to do list: find that comedy bit about shark vaginas, read Neil Gaiman's American Gods, watch the movie Teeth with the lights on. I don't really think I can offer much more explanation than that since you kind of had to be there to get the full experience.

Everyone was trying to catch one team that jumped out to an early lead and saved those jokers for that last final round. Nobody could catch them in though, Dude Nectar held on and held the first place prize aloft. Baby Ruth MasterBader Allen Ginsburg saved that joker to take home second place. Spock You Like a Hurricane not only triumphed in their own mini-battle of the sexes, but also took third place which included a bottle of Boulevard Cholate Ale and a Papa Louie's growler.
