Longtime quizzer, newbie quizmaster. Music nut and lover of queer/feminist sci-fi in all of its forms. KCMO is now my home, although I claim Arkansas as my root. I've got lots of nicknames and if you come up with one I like, I might add it to the list.

This city is looking gorgeous in all of its fall finery and this mild weather and sunshine are making everyone happy. We had a great group of folks out at quiz tonight. Maybe they just needed to get their quiz on before the World Series dominates Kansas City. Maybe they like me, they really like me. I’m gonna go with the need to quiz and I was happy to provide some much needed quiz fun for everyone who came out tonight.

Music + Space = Awesome. Tonight’s music round featured songs with celestial objects in the title and most teams did pretty well figuring that out. Bowie is a tricky one though. You know it’s him, but getting the right song title is tough because he was totally obsessed with space themes in the early days. Space Oddity, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane. Several teams keyed in on Life on Mars for the win. We got a little obscure with a little number from 1962. Several teams put the title together, Venus in Blue Jeans, but no one got the point for Jimmy Clanton as the artist. Sam Gives Warm Wet Hugs rocked a 14 point round with a joker to take the lead for the night.

Round 4 hit me right in my sweet spot, PIE! I love pie in all its wondrous forms, fruit, meat, hand, pizza, and especially fried. In honor of the return of Twin Peaks, quizzers were challenged to prove their pie knowledge. We covered it all in this round. Poop pie from The Help, meat pies and cannibalism musicals, pies to the face, pie fights, key limes, and the seasonal favorite of pumpkin pie. It was a great round, but I was hungry by the end of it. Several teams found it to be delicious as well with four teams scoring seven points on the round.

Usually, our audio round focuses on movies or tv clips. Tonight we went a bit off the rails with a whole round on presidential assassination. Maybe all the hype about how awful the Secret Service is at protecting the President brought this round into being. Several teams were quite upset about a whole history round, but that’s just the way quiz rolls. Most folks remembered that Hinckley attempted to take out Ronald Reagan as part of a misguided scheme to attract the attention of a young Jody Foster. Barking up the wrong tree on that one, John. Many teams flipped Garfield and McKinley and I can understand the confusion. Both were shot by guys with foreign sounding names in public places and they fall into that swath of presidents around the 1900’s that most people can’t remember. Other teams just wrote down some stuff and hoped for the best. The average for the round was right at 4 points, but Moose v Panda stood above the rest with a perfect score.

Sam Gives Warm Wet Hugs jumped out front and never looked back taking home the first place prize of a $30 gift certificate at Green Room Burgers and Beer. Second place went to Seema Wants Revenge who took home second and choose the beer bounty which included a rare bottle of Boulevard’s 2014 Bourbon Barrel Quad. Third place went to Great Job! who snagged a $20 gift certificate from Green Room Burgers and Beer.

Rain, rain, and more rain. Enough rain to postpone the Royals playoff game. Not enough rain to call of quiz! We quiz no matter what the weather. Hell, I’d shout the questions at you and sing if the power went out. We are a can do bunch and tonight’s teams came ready to quiz.

First we learned of the dangers of Canada in the film Canadian Bacon. Then South Park told us that Canada was to blame for all our problems. The truth of the matter is that Canadians are living among us and we don’t even know it. Tonight’s Secretly Canadian round exposed the frightening truth. America’s Sweetheart Mary Pickford, Canadian. Although, I had to explain who she was to our quizzers since they are more into talkies than silent films, several teams missed it. Zamboni, NOT Canadian, but actually Californian. Pamela Anderson, seems Californian from all that Baywatch swimsuit frolicking, but is really Canadian. We learned that Canadians are everywhere and only vigilance will prevent them from destroying our American way of life by teaching us to be nice and offering free healthcare. Canadian Bacon warned us to shudder at the thought of your children pledging allegiance to the maple leaf. Mayonnaise on everything. Winter 11 months of the year. Anne Murray - all day, every day. Truly frightening.

As we closed out tonight’s quiz, we ran into a challenge. Anytime I have an example answer, I’m not sure how the round will go. In round six, quizzers had to identify the TV show that started or underwent a big change this year and then smash it together with something else that shared either a word or a syllable in common. Some teams were on it and kicked some quiz ass with perfect scores for the round. Several teams struggled with the theme, but it also seemed that they don’t own a TV or haven’t discovered Hulu yet. However, the light came on in the question which put Sublime’s song about a Dalmatian that doesn’t mind pot smoke with a show that introduces us to a young James Gordon and Bruce Wayne, better known as BATMAN! Almost everyone got that one. We got through it together, but it was a little rough. Thanks for sticking with me on that!

Animatronic Grandma jumped out to an early lead and held on to take first place and a $30 gift certificate from Green Room Burgers and Beer. Basic Bitches and You Can’t Spell Manslaughter Without Laughter tied for second and had to pick a representative for rock, paper, scissors to see who would get second place. You Can’t Spell Manslaughter Without Laughter came out on top for second and a $20 gift certificate from Green Room Burgers and Beer. Basic Bitches took home the beer bounty for third place. I had an extra prize tonight, swag from Men, Women, and Children including t-shirts and cellphone wallets, so fourth place team Nerdy By Nature took home the swag and were happy about it.

Kansas City is kinda baseball crazy right now. I’m not a huge fan, but I would love for our hometown team to make it all the way to the World Series. I don’t know if it’s destiny, but it’s a lot of fun. I was pretty happy that they won in three games so I wouldn’t have to compete with them during Monday’s quiz. Also happy that they can rest up and get ready to take on Baltimore. But enough of the sportsball chatter, let’s talk about quiz.

I find that whenever I give my teams a math sounding round theme, they get blank looks on their faces and then groan, even when it’s a music round. Last night’s music round clearly stated Eight Songs, 12 Answers. That’s pretty simple math, folks. I don’t even need a spreadsheet to work out that four of the answers would repeat. Maybe it’s an artist, maybe it’s a song title. We can’t give them all away. Several teams did pretty well with it and a few just threw some shit down and hoped for the best. We all learned a few things as well. That Brandy Your a Fine Girl song was sung by a band called the Looking Glass. I like that they took that nautical theme all the way to their name, but just couldn’t get it to stretch to a second hit song.

I’ve always found that my quizzers love a challenge, but I guess it doesn’t include a timed round, especially one all about cows. Everybody had two and a half minutes to come up with 8 states that aren’t Texas and have over three million head of cattle in them. It proved to be a bit more challenging than some folks anticipated. Here in Missouri, we are in the beef belt and if you named our home state and most of the states surrounding Kansas, you’d have over half of the answers, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. Add in that agriculture powerhouse to our north, Iowa, and that’s five. Then things get dicey for those last three. Expanding that beef belt north gets you South Dakota for number six. Then teams started throwing out Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado which seem to be pretty good answers, but they don’t cross that threshold. Others tried New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Hawaii, which seemed like odd choices, but pressure makes people do weird things. I’m not sure where they’d even put all those cows in Hawaii. Those last two, California and Wisconsin, proved elusive for all but a few teams. With a high score of 6, those teams were just like all those cows…outstanding in their field.

Our second audio round proved that Patrick Warburton is everywhere. He just keeps popping up in commercials, good sitcoms, awful sitcoms, and animated roles, Disney and otherwise. I’m sure that a few quizzers, like myself, had no idea who this guy was until they heard his voice. Best thing we learned from the round? The Tick is coming to Amazon Prime so put on your binge watching britches and settle in for a marathon soon.

Great Job! returned after some time away to take first place and elected to take home our beer prize from Tallgrass Brewing which included two four packs of Zombie Monkie, a nice metal Tallgrass Brewing sign, stickers and pins. Second place went to Urethra Franklin who took home a $30 gift certificate from Green Room Burgers and Beer. Third place went to I Will Eat Your Soul who can instead eat a burger or two with their $20 gift certificate from Green Room Burgers and Beer.
