Tuesday nights at Swagger (83rd and Wornall) from 7:30-9:30
Tara (Ptera Dactyl)

Then the son, Kronos, from his ambush stretched forth his left hand and in his right took the great long sickle with jagged teeth, and swiftly lopped off his own father's members and cast them away to fall behind him...and a white foam spread around them from the immortal flesh...and came forth an awful and lovely goddess, and grass grew up about her beneath her shapely feet. Her gods and men call Ptera Dactyl

I LOVE SUBBING! It’s like being a traveling carnie that gets to see different faces every week. Ok, I’ve been watching too much Carnivale, but the sentiment still stands. It was rad being in a different venue for the evening. Did you guys know that the burgers at Green Room are like super good? News to me.

I had two, count ‘em, TWO separate teams, believe that KoRn was WuTang Clan for the visual round. I just…I don’t even… I mean, I guess since they’re a cartoon rendering based on Scooby Do, I could maybe cut a little slack, as there were some incredibly interesting answers for that round. WuTang and KoRn, though, have not a single similarity between the two of them. Not one. You guys are all so intelligent but this really worried me.

The Milkshake is a Lie tried to pressure me into accepting Pat Benatar as singing “Because the Night”, and other teams wrote the same answer. I’m only familiar with Patti Smith’s works, but I didn’t have time to google it to properly shut them down. BUT I’m here now with all the time in the world to properly tell you guys that YOU’RE WRONG. That felt good to finally be able to say with confidence.

We had two different ties last night! One for first AND one for third! We settled the third place between Child Services and Great Job! with an arm wrestling. Great Job! sent a team member that I honestly didn’t have too much hope for in the strength department, especially with who he was going up against. He TOTALLY surprised me when he opened an entire can of whoop-ass on Child Services’ member, crushing him in about 5 seconds and winning them the third place prize of special fancy beer.

We then had a head-to-head between Throbbing Gristle and The Milkshake is a Lie with a SUDDEN DEATH round. Luckily team Milkshake missed a question because we would’ve had to do another; they both knew way too many things collectively.

If you had a good time with me last night, and I know you did, come back next week, too! I’ll be guest starring again while the lovely QM Jen takes some much needed vaycay. See you then!

Longtime quizzer, newbie quizmaster. Music nut and lover of queer/feminist sci-fi in all of its forms. KCMO is now my home, although I claim Arkansas as my root. I've got lots of nicknames and if you come up with one I like, I might add it to the list.

Tonight was a hot time at the Green Room Burgers and Beer as 13 teams battled it out to see who would stand atop quiz mountain. While the winner was clear, runner-up required some extra work on the part of four teams, but in the end, we sorted it out.

Round one featured anagrammed names of presidents and sometimes an anagram holds truth. Red anal organ = Ronald Reagan, check. Wow, indoors owl = Woodrow Wilson, check. Lick wily , mailmen = William McKinley, maybe, I don’t really know him that well. Everyone rocked it though many have forgotten Martin Van Buren, but he spoke Dutch so he’s got that flag to wave high.

Our music round was a grower, not a shower, and could have used a fluffer on occasion. Eight songs all about the trials and tribulations of erections and making them do what you want when you want. I guess that could be fun, but it just seems like a lot of work. I’ll admit to not having much hands on experience in this arena, so I could be completely off base. My favorite had to be the inclusion of The Soft Parade by The Doors. That’s a great add.

We also had a timed round and the music about killed me. I’ve blogged about how I’m no fan of songs with Jenny in them, except maybe De La Soul. Using Tommy Tutone’s 867-5309 as our timer tonight, almost pushed me over the edge and distracted me from the fact that all the  quizzers couldn’t name 8 JLaw movies to save their lives. 6, yes. And, no, movies that aren’t out yet do not count.

Putting together mean girls and dog training may have been a bit much, but we all learned about mean TV hosts and a Desperate Housewife. We will all likely remember the name of Lassie’s original trainer, Rudd Weatherwax, because that is a name. If that’s not a stage name, then kudos to his parents for putting that all together. Sounds like he would have had a firm hand and maybe he could have trained Timmy to stay out of the damn well.

Great Job! did a really great job to take home first and $30 from the Green Room. Then we ended with a four way tie for second. With only two prizes, we had to sort that shit out. We set up four beers and asked for a representative from each team. Then we went over the rules and let ‘em go. I figured I should take a video in the event of a photo finish so enjoy that video here.  Animatronic Grandma got the glass down first, barely, taking home second. Gaza Strippers: 500+ for Peace were next for third place and took home some bombers of Stone Brewing Company beers to practice for next time.

Get your team together and prove your team is supreme. Rumble in the Pub, the only tournament that matters, returns to select cities in August. You've got to register, but that part's easy and free -- head to geekswhodrink.com/rumble for more details!

Thank you all for a great night of quizzing.  You're each special and let's do it again soon.

Longtime quizzer, newbie quizmaster. Music nut and lover of queer/feminist sci-fi in all of its forms. KCMO is now my home, although I claim Arkansas as my root. I've got lots of nicknames and if you come up with one I like, I might add it to the list.

Mellow temperatures returned to KCMO and the quizzers returned to the patio to enjoy them. Beer flowed and burgers were eaten and quiz was fun, if not a bit challenging. We even had an extra 16 point round tonight, but it was no easy task either.

Our first round featured a series of questions leading us to an American treasure or something like that. Each answer featured a fine cinematic work of Nicholas Cage as a clue for our bonus question. Apparently some teams didn’t quite solve the mystery or very few people remember his work in World Trade Center. I certainly didn’t and I’m just fine with that.

This week’s music round featured four original groups and four related spin-off bands or solo artists. The Breeders as a spin-off of The Pixies. I don’t know that I can agree, but I do love me some Deal sisters and I’m happy they’ll have new music coming out with their old buddy Josephine Wiggs. And they’ll be playing in KC. While there are many spin-offs of the Beatles, we were looking for Ringo there. I’ll agree that it sounded a bit like a Wings song, but George Harrison would roll over in his grave before he made a song like that. Overall, a fun little round and most folks did well enough.

Our visual round was a bonus 16 pointer on Horrible Bosses from television and movies. I was happy to see that most of you recognized one of my favorite movies 9 to 5, but only a few got the name of the egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss, Franklin Hart. I need to watch it again. And so should all of you.

Round 7 featured a bevy of radio and podcast hosts trying to sell us some thing and many of teams struggled to identify them. From dog food to sex toys, they were trying to sell us everything. Tig Notaro sounded like she should have been doing anything else in the world than a commercial, but maybe she was in the middle of chemo and that would make sense. NPR nerds were excited to hear Ira Glass and Peter Sagel in a quiz. And why wouldn’t you want to buy your pet food from Snooki. That makes perfect sense. Right.

Animatronic Grandma ended up on top of the quiz heap and took home a $30 from the Green Room. Dr. Oz’s Mitochondrial Farts landed in second and ended up with $20 from the Green Room. The Drunk Puppies stumbled into third and took home the beer prize. Salem from The Drunk Puppies was our email question winner and selected a stylish box to store her drugs or candy or what have you.

Are you a Griffindor or a Slytherin? Do you have a shrine in your home in memory of Dumbledore? If you geek out about Harry Potter, get set for the next Geeks Who Drink themed quiz on Saturday, July 19. Thank you all for a great night of quizzing.  You're each special and let's do it again soon.
