10 years ago, I left the frozen tundra of Canada to escape the blistering cold of winter, only to move to South Texas where I now run the risk of combusting in the blistering heat of summer.  Apparently I'm drawn to extremes.  No middle of the road for this Crazy Canuck.

I was in severe need of a creative outlet and a place where yelling obsenities at people was acceptable, (and wouldn't get me fired).  Then one day I was handed a microphone by the Overlords at Geeks Who Drink.  I was instructed to "Go forth and entertain drunken nerds with wit and snark.  Oh, and ask them these quiz questions while you're there."

And so I did, and it was good.

If you quiz at a venue where video rounds are shown for round 7, then chances are it was produced by me.  I hope you enjoy them.

I have been accused of "hating everything" but I actually like many things.  I am a total geek for Star Wars, the works of Neil Gaiman, The Ramones, Shonen Knife, Nerdist, (Classic) Dr. Who, pro wrestling, good beer, poutine, British television and cheese.  All else is pointless, irrelevant and a waste of time.

I am also a part-time ninja.

Holy crap, did we ever pack Freetail last night for quiz. We had a birthday party that had to split off into three teams, and lots of newbies. It made for a night a bit more hectic than usual, but it was still a ton of fun.

Before we get to the blog, I need to make the following announcement for the benefit of those that weren't at quiz last night. Next week's quiz (Monday May 27th) is cancelled due to Spurs playoffs. We'll be back again the week after that. Sorry to ruin your Monday night tradition, but I'll see you all again soon.

Ok, we had a fun round to kick off the quiz. It highlighted my guilty little pleasure. Wrestling. All the answers were the names of wrestlers. I grew up watching wrestling. I loved it. I watched it every chance I could get, which usually meant watching wrestling every Saturday afternoon. I could get some wrestling from out of Montreal, I could get the AWA wrestling from Minnesota, and if I watched the French channel, I could get WWF's show. Back then the WWF show pretty much only consisted of watching the big starts stomp the shit out of some guy that looked like he came out of the audience. The match would have no offense by the poor bastard, and the star would kick their ass for about a minute and then watch the match. Not very exciting but it was all I could get. Now the real big deal was the Saturday Night's Main Event. It would pre-empt Saturday Night Live usually once every two months. My parents would let me stay up until 1am to watch it, which was the best thing ever. My dad would make me a big bowl of popcorn from our trusty hot air popper and my mom, dad, sister and I would all sit down and watch the likes of Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, Andre The Giant, Don Muraco and so many others. Saturday Night's Main Event was the best time ever. Flash forward 25+ years and I still am a wrestling fan. Now, I usually miss the shows on tv but listen to pocast recaps online, and sometimes if some cool shit happened I'll look for it online somewhere. The way I ingest the content has changed, but I'm still a fan.

I love how loyal you guys are to quiz. You guys have become an awesome band of regulars and it's great to see so many of the same faces week after week. It let's me know that I'm doing my job and doing my job well. So when I announce to a room full of geeks that the quiz next week is cancelled and you boo the roof off the place, it makes my cold heart smile. I'm glad that our little get together every week is that important to you. Sucks that we have to spend next week on the bench while the Spurs play, but that's the way the proverbial ball bounces. I'll just do my best to make up for it with an even more awesome quiz next time. I'll miss you guys, and I'll probably take in a local quiz elsewhere, and bust the balls of some poor Quizmaster, like I usually do when my quiz is pre-empted.

Cheers guys, and I'll see you all in two weeks.

So, today was one of those days where I was overjoyed and proud to be Canadian. In case you've been living under a rock, Canadian astronaut (no, really we have them) Chris Hadfield concluded his 6 months stay on the International Space Station. The entire time he was up there he was doing his country proud. With the help of his son back on Earth, Hadfield put together some amazing videos up there on the space station doing really cool experiments and answering kids questions. If you haven't seen any of them, you really need to check them out on Youtube. I'm also sure by now that you've seen the video of him singing his rendition of Space Oddity by David Bowie. The entire music video was shot in space. It was breathtaking. I saw it some time on Sunday morning and by Monday morning it already had wracked up 2 million hits.  Currently it's sitting at 6.5 million hits. It's nice to see a video going viral because of its awesomeness instead of it highlighting someone being an asshole, or horrifically failing at something for a change. Seriously, if you've not seen that video yet, you really should watch it. And if you liked that, he also did a video where he performed an original song with the Barenaked Ladies. WHILE HE WAS IN SPACE. It's about his experiences in traveling to the Station and his experiences while living there. It's called I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing). All I can say is something QM friend Boba Fatt said after watching the Space Oddity video, “And for a few moments, nothing is wrong. “ I think that sums up my feelings about both videos perfectly.  Hatfield was hurtling back to Earth while I was starting quiz tonight.  I was hoping for a nice, safe landing while playing some songs in his honor before quiz.  He landed safe and my entire country cheered.  Paulina was streaming the video of his reentry on her phone.  Science is fucking amazing!

So yeah...we had a quiz tonight and it was a toughie. And I apologize for the overly loud birthday party going on at the back of the bar because it was making it really difficult for some of you to hear me from what I was told later. Thankfully they left near the end of the night and we had a few rounds on uninterrupted peace. Hopefully the basketball playoffs will be over soon and things can get back to normal as we head into summer.

I hope everyone has a great week. Can't wait to quiz with you all again next time.

Every now and then a quiz round comes along that is so thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd that it gets applause at the end of it. Some even stood up. Those are the rounds that as a Quizmaster I love being able to present to you guys. Tonight we had such a round. It was the Porn For The Blind round. We all had a really good time with it, and I'm glad you all had so much fun. I have already passed along your compliments to the chef. Let's hope we get more of those rounds in the future.

There are a lot of new faces coming out to quiz every week, and I love to see that. And some of you have gone past the point of being new faces and are what I would consider regulars now. Welcome to the fold!

Round 4 was a who's who of famous people I really fucking hate. In the case of that white trash piece of crap Honey Boo Boo the famous in the previous sentence should be in quotation marks. I think we need to move beyond making people famous because they're fun to ridicule and laugh at. Honey Boo Boo and her train wreck, white trash family should never have been put on television. And now they're famous. For what, really? Being a family full of fucking clowns that we can all look down on? Man we're better than this as a society. At least I thought we were. And come on. It's on TLC? The Learning Channel? What exactly are we learning here?

If I had an award to give for best quip of the night it would go to Sultans of Siracha for their commentary on round 4. They wrote the following on their answer sheet: “If you kill all of these people it would be called a YOLOcaust.”. Ok, so YOLOcaust has been a thing for awhile and I'm just now hearing the term. I guess I live under a rock. I still found it funny though.

Who doesn't like winning bar cash to your favourite Geeks Who Drink venue? Are you a fan of Game of Thrones? Put that love to good use by entering our latest contest. Go to http://www.jointherealm.com/ and create a Game of Thrones style sigil that represents your team, or Freetail. I did one here for Freetail and posted it on our facebook page the other day. You can see it here. So go there and send in an entry to win a $25 bar tab at Freeail. Details are here.

See you all next week!
