Quiz Schedule
Monday nights, 8:00pm at Saint Rocke!
Shadan (shadude (the long winded Persian))

A geek of many sorts:

 a space geek - believe it or not, I really am a rocket scientist

a music geek - used to be a DJ at my college radio station

a concert geek - live music rocks! (pun intended)

a live theatre geek - it's just a better value than the going to the cinema at this point

a musical theatre geek -more than an straight man rightfully should be

a political geek - it's a much better bloodsport than the MMA

a pop culture geek - grew up as a latch-key child, so TV was my babysitter

a bike geek - Orbea Orca with Campy Record-11 (if you know what that is, then you're a bike geek, too)

Because to quote the great Matthew McConaughey, "that's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age."

Well, as tradition holds, Seis-de-Mayo is reserve as the recovery day from Cinco-de-Mayo (especially when the CdM is on Domingo). Clearly many quizzers were not able to roll away from their porcelain god long enough to quiz with us….their loss.

But what was interesting is how a couple of regulars chose to form superteams….with one flirting with disqualification for having too many players (we'll just say he was there to watch the hockey game).

But my fave team name of the night did come from one of the superteams, Revenge of the 6th. (Star Wars references always play will with me.)

And I'm sorry to Ron. He was nice enough to make the drive up from Long Beach because his quiz was canceled…..but LA traffic bit him in the arse and showed up after Round 2. Ironically, we did have a question about which city has the worst traffic….and what's even more ironic is that one team got it wrong! Well, at least Ron was able to provide some help to the lovely lady at the bar that he was sitting next too.

As far as the quiz itself goes, one team decided to ignore Rule #3 right from the start with the very first question. When the theme is "Recently in Stuff," which year of the Kentucky Derby do you think I am asking about, mutha-eff'er?!?!?

I think my fave round of the night was Round 6, because it allowed me an early opportunity to fulfill my destiny of a curmudgeon old man yelling at those damn kids to get off my long. And apparently I wasn't the only one who hates kids these days because another team chose to use the word "Fucking" for everyone's middle name (if only we could actually go into the Hall of Records in Canada and formally change their #1 douche bag's name to "Justin Fucking Bieber").

And for the second straight week, a question about my homeland ends the quiz. Last week it was about how many people Iran has executed….and this week, it was for the #1 crime that causes men to be executed - unapproved hairstyles. I do find it ironic that I work in the same facility as the most famous mohawked Iranian (and here's a picture of my at his workstation).

Fear Boner & Ja Rule battled it out through out the night, with Fear Boner always just staying out of their reach.

Fuck You Music & Revenge of the 6th each get out-done by one particularly bad round.

And A Platypus Stole My Car didn't even try in Round 5 (John Venn's iPod: The '70s)…..I guess the platypus must have also stolen your high school notes on elementary set theory.

And yes, I can verify: OMG That Blond Bartender is Hot!!!!

See you next week!

With three 16-point rounds, Monday's quiz set the stage for some high scores….and one particular team, My Team is Chronically Late, just ran away with the quiz with three perfect rounds (two of them worth 16 points each) and only one one question for another three rounds (they only lost 11 points for the entire quiz - imagine how high their score would have been if the team members were on time).

The second place team, Triv-Triv-Triv-adelphia, was rather befuddled by it all…..and understandably so. Normally their performance would have garnered them an easy 1st place victory.

And the third place team, Sunday Sunday SUNDAY - Steven Hawking & Christopher Reeve Tractor Pull, showed us that sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. It's not they aren't good, but if the 2-person team that came in fourth had hooked up with their missing team member (who ended up playing as a 1-person team), then they would have come in third. Then again, their team name alone should have been good enough to earn them third place.

Speaking of team names, we had not one, but two references to awesome classic movies of my generation: We're Only Mostly Dead & There is Only Zuul. Well, we had a couple other references to movies that I love, but those names are rather overused at this point and leave this blogger cold & empty inside. #justsayin'

As far as the quiz itself goes, it's always a great social experiment to analyze your answers. Por ejemplo….

  • nearly everyone knew that inside the front right pocket of a pair of 501s is another smaller pocket, but some of you were strangely specific about what you put in that pocket. I've always thought of it as a coin pocket, but someone puts the condoms in that pocket. (How small is your penis for your condom to fit a pocket barely big enough to fit a quarter. I feel sorry for your girl friend.)
  • someone knew that the last name of the singer of La Bamba started with "val," but the best they could come up with was "Frankie Valli" - winners of worst/funniest wrong answer of the night (I know, it's really easy to confuse an Italian from New Jersey with a Mexican from California.)
  • the guy who played Harvey Dent in Tim Burton's "Batman" did have the first name "Billy," and he is black…..but his name was not "Billy Black."
  • more of you need to see "Fletch"
  • and too many of you know about sybians <brown chicken brown cow>

Oh, and why yes, that was a banana in my pocket…..AND I was happy to see you.

See you next week!

Lauren from Dave Coulier's Mullet just can't wait to lick her prize for getting the e-mail bonus question correct.

You would think that winning first place would inspired the captain of My Team is Chronically Late to forgive her teammates.

Triv-Triv-Triv-adelphia with so many gift cards and free drinks, they just can't tell them apart.

Sunday Sunday SUNDAY - Steven Hawking & Christopher Reeve Tractor Pull kinda looks like a human mental centipede....and the guy in front is losing.....and the guy in the back just can't wait his turn.

Monday gave us was one of those quizzes where I wished I was playing rather than hosting.

This quiz had a little but of everything:

  • a round using anagrams to name some of the most powerful women (i.e., NOT Sarah Palin);
  • an audio round that mostly from the 80s & 90s (despite being forced to identify them from a bad Euro-cover band version);
  • a round that cleverly used "ZZ" & "Top";
  • a round on patron Saints (yes Virginia, there really is a patron Saint of the Internet);
  • a round on Aussie firsts that tested ones true measure of intelligence (i.e., not whether or not you know the answer, but can you figure it own because on the question itself);
  • a video round with quite a few tv shows from the 70s (based on some of your wrong answers, most of these shows were on before most of you were born);
  • and the best part, a final question in Round 8 about one of the greatest comedy movies of all time, "Airplane!" (Well, actually the best part was no "Game of Thrones" questions…..the the "Airplane!" question was a close second.)

Yeah, I loved this quiz!!!! (And the only thing that made the Britney/Christina round tolerable was that I used a lot of sexy pics of them when displaying the questions on the screen.)

I would not have won on my own, but I definitely would have done better than half of you…..or more importantly, I could have been a contribution to team that didn't have any 40something friends.

But alas, someone has to be up on stand up on stage and be a smart-arse and make fun of your wrong answers…..such is my burden.

What's your excuse for losing?
