An amazingly close quiz at Costello's on this fine Cinco de Mayo!
Round 1: Schindler's Big Adventure!
Alternate film titles.
Aced by: Friendzone, with many teams getting 6 or 8, as well, and an inexplicable first-round joker by 516-627-5566, who will come to regret it.
Average: 5.5
Round 2: Powers of Ten
Audio round with numbers in the titles and/or artists' names that can be expressed as powers of ten.
Aced by: No one, but 516-627-5566 had the highest score (12).
Average: 9.5
Round 3: We Took This Round From Them
Name 8 of the 11 Native American tribal groupings that have at least 40,000members who report that ethnicity alone.
Aced by: No one, high score of 6 by Los Quizerables. The New England Native American tribes were overrepresented in the answers, probably because we live in New England (I'm as shocked as you are).
Average: 4
Round 4: Cinco de Mayo!
A round about the number five, and condiments.
Aced by: No one, but Lazer Show came close (7).
Average: 5.5
Round 5: Hanks For Everything
Identify the Tom Hanks movies.
Aced by: No one, nearly everyone got a 6 or 7. No one has ever seen Mazes & Monsters, it turns out.
Average: 6.25
Round 6: Tequila y Cerveza
Questions on Tequila and Beer!
Aced by: No one, but lots of 6s and 7s.
Average: 5.9
Round 7: Movies Redux
Identify the sequels.
Aced by: No one, high score of 7 from Friendzone.
Average: 4.9
Round 8: Random Knowledge
Aced by: No one, high score of 12 from Lazer Show.
Average: 10.4
Thank you all for playing, and see you next Sunday!

So I thought about making my last Costello’s Tavern blog a heartfelt emotional sign off to you all, but that would require me having 1) a heart and 2) the ability to feel any emotion at all. In case you missed last night’s quiz, I am taking over a new venue out in the burbs, but the awesome quizmistress duo of Anna and Laura will be taking over CT’s next week to bring you your weekly questions on everything from death metal to condom brands to banana stands. So many of you guys know them already and know that they’ll take the Geeks quiz to brand new heights at Costello’s Tavern.
With that out of the way, allow me to move on to last night’s recap. Winning the quiz was Some People Like Their Cucumbers Picked, who managed to fend off a late charge from second-place Horse Ballet. In third place was Oedipal Arrangements, followed by What Are This? and Average Joe.
The first round was on the first lines of famous songs. With a round like that, how could we not ask a question from All Along the Watchtower? That was followed by an audio round where the first word of each song title combined to form a lyric from a Meat Loaf song. After that was a sooner or later round where I listed out movie titles and the Geeks had to name the actor whose character died in each one. It’s amazing that there are eight actors who’ve died at least five times each on the big screen.
The answers to round four all contained numbers from the Fibonacci Sequence and the visual round showed incomplete construction projects that the Geeks had to identify. Round six was a round on marketing, and that was followed by the second audio round in which TV theme songs were played and the Geeks had to name the show.
Thanks to all who came out to the quiz last night. Come back next week as Anna and Laura take over your Sunday nights. Have a great week everyone and don’t get into too much trouble.

So a lot has happened since the last time we quizzed. Instead of cracking any jokes about the events of the past week, I’ll just say it was really nice being at the quiz and seeing everyone’s scowling faces. After coming together as a city and catching the bad guy, all it took was one disabled red line train for me to put my fuck off face back on.
At last night’s Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Costello’s Tavern, Some People Like Their Cucumbers Picked showed mastery on RPG theme songs to finish in first place with 75 points. Gnome Gang took second, followed by big-time backsliders Lazer Show. Fourth went to We’re Not Cheating, We’re Sexting, then 3 Men and a Babe and The Carpetbaggers. Badass Birthday Babes, Logistix, Hopefully Not in Last Place, and Dylaroo rounded out the standings.
The first round had eight questions on Shaq, which everyone in Boston should have been familiar with after his year as a Celtic. The second round was titled Rock for Initiative and included eight songs that one might find in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. That was followed by a multiple choice round on surfing terms.
Round four was straightforward—I read off a year and three actors and the Geeks had to name the movie. The visual round had the Geeks matching the director with his photo, and round six was on Hell, Marys, and Hail Marys. After that was an audio round called Interrupting Cow, where I played a clip from a movie or TV show that mentioned an animal in it and the animal was bleeped out by a mooing cow.
Thanks to all who came to the quiz. Stay safe everyone and have a great week. See you all next Sunday.
