Let's do some real talk:
Star Bar was my first quiz. I was but a budding quiz master, flung into the world of quizzing on sixth street, and you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way. Let's talk about how Star Bar will always hold a special place in my heart, forever:
1. The Staff: From Jordan to Jacob (hope the hike is going amazingly) to Nate to Cody to Adam, the Star Bar staff is the most friendly, accomodating, and good looking bar staff in town. They treated me so well, and I hope you all tipped them accordingly.
2. The Quizzers: Thanks to Star Bar, I got to know a lot of people who have now become a part of my weekly, if not daily, life. I really appreciate each and every one of you, and for those of you who lost your quiz virginity with Star Bar (and me), I'd like to say: Thank you. I hope it wasn't very painful, and that you didn't bleed a lot.
3. Dance Party: I don't know how it happened exactly, but I know that one week, people got up and started dancing between rounds 7 and 8--thus, a tradition was born that was ours, uniquely and wholly. I'll never do it at another venue because it was born at Star Bar.
And here is the saddest dance party ever:
4. I can't pronouce anything. Ever. I've learned to own it, love it about myself, and just look for other ways to make fun of you guys (like tonight, when the "Silent P round" produced some of my favorite wrong answers ever: pstatements, pgallileo, pCIA)
Those are not at all the only reasons. I could talk about Lou Gehrig's disease y'all, or the night we got trampled by a wandering 80's party, or how the inside of Star Bar echos harder than Gol Gumbaz (LOOK IT UP), but I won't.
What I will talk about is how warm my heart was tonight when all the regulars showed up, but not only that: people from San Antonio (encouraged by some of my favorite QMs: Shane and Paulina) showed up, or when friends of friends came by--and everyone was dressed in black. They brought me flowers. Chelsea II provided a veil for me.
I mean, who can be sad when we all dance to the Cupid Shuffle for the last time, or sing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot loudly? This was, by far, my favorite quiz at Star Bar. And I'm glad it was the last one, because I don't know if I could live up to it again. I mean shit--a dude passed out in his chair right in front of us. How can we top that?!
You were my first, and yeah, the quiz tonight was difficult, but we had a great time.
And that's all that matters.
You guys surprised me by singing "Swing Low" really well! Look!:
You're ALL stars to me, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
So much QM love,
Samantha

*CRY*
*SOB*
I wrote the entire blog and didn't save it, tried to upload the dance off video and, wouldn't you know it, my blog is gone.
IT WAS SO GOOD!!
*sigh*
Let me try to sum up.
Last night was our third-to-last time to quiz at Star Bar, and we had some new teams! Friends of mine who have never seen me do the QM thing, regulars bringing their friends, and a totally new team I've never seen before all showed up! It was pretty amazing, and I felt very happy in my heart. I might have even shed a happy tear.
The quiz was running smoothly until about... 8pm, I would say. I guess that's when church gets out or something, or maybe that's when the drunk folks on the lake decide to have a night-cap, because there was an extremely loud drunk girl that tried to compete (and nearly won!) with me and my microphone for the rest of the quiz. Luckily, we were ahead of schedule, so she only screamed over 3 rounds.
At one point we heard her yell, "YAY white people! WHITE PEOPLE UNITE!" and I shifted a little uncomfortably in my seat. It reminded of this video: It's safe for work!
Sooooo, the rounds tonight were fun. From Nipples and Millenia/Falcons (where every nerd in the place creamed their pants because I started playing the theme for Star Wars, but alas, the round was not really about Star Wars... sorry for the trick!), to What Manny Ramierz put into his body now and a Say When round on Fictional Towns, it was a varied and interesting quiz. Unfortunately, you all didn't have as many funny wrong answers, which I kind of depend on for microphone fodder. Oh well! We were all having an off week.
We had a tie for 2nd place today! Ron and Jenna went head-to-head for the $15 second place prize, and Ron came out on top! I mean, when Ron really wants something, he does commit to it, and he definitely violated that chair! I'm posting the video on facebook if you guys want to check it out. You can check here. I'll figure out how to put it in the blog later.
This is the part where you need to pay attention:
On July 22nd, we will have our last quiz at Star Bar. I'm going to do something special for you all, but I would also like to send the quiz off in style. We're going to have a funeral. That's right. We are going to lay Star Bar Quiz to rest. Please dress appropriately. Surprises to follow.
Until next week, you all stay cool and hope for rain!
You're all Stars to me!
Samantha

So I love Star Bar!
Manager Nathan is a badass, Adam behind the bar was killing it all night, and Star Bar server extraordinaire Cam has a great smile and an infectiously positive attitude.
We had four teams at the start of the night, battling it out for one of the gift cards that come with the prestigious titles of first or second place.
We kicked the night off with a fairly cheesy round entitled Round 1: Answer like a Pirate, where every answer included the syllable "ARRR". You better believe Shayne read every answer as Black Beard. Rounds 2 and 7 were pretty straight-forward, run-of-the-mill audio rounds, while Round 3: Singular Sensations tripped up a fair amount of people in asking them to name 8 of the 10 teams in the Big Four U.S. sports leagues whose names do NOT end in the letter 'S'. We also had a round on Canada, and a round on Dungeons, Dragons, and Philosophy 101.
Olympics 2012 came in fourth with 27 points, followed by Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! with 40 points. Our top two teams of the night were GWD regulars Honey Badger with 62 points, (and a big thank you that team's Chelsea 2 for making brownies for everyone) and Shayne's Beard and His Beard with 73 points!
Thanks to Samantha Perry for letting the likes of Shayne and I sub for her! We will be back in our respective locations come this Sunday. Come see Sam at Star Bar at 7pm, and remember to like Geeks Who Drink at Star Bar on Facebook. Because that is how we measure worth these days.
