Quiz Schedule
Wednesdays 7-9 Billy's on Burnet in Austin, TX
JD Stumpf (DJ JD)

Top Ten Facts You (don't really) Need To Know About DJ JD:

10. My QM alias comes from a kid who named me that in 6th grade. My other nicknames are: Turtle, Jay, and Stumpfy.

9. I started my day job on August 12th, 1999, when I literally walked into Byrd Middle School and the secretary looked at me and said "You must be here for the science teacher job," and I said "Yes I am!" (even though I was just driving around looking for any job at all). That was three days before school started and I have been a teacher ever since.

8. I am a QM because my day job just don't quite cut it in the financial department. Also, because I friggin love it.

7. When I was around 5 years old my stated career objective was to be "The World's Greatest Lover."

6. I have only placed once in a GWD quiz, but it was second place and it was just my fiancee and I against fifteen other teams at Mr. Trampps (so that makes it like placing three or four times right??).

5. I have been singing since I was five – my first song I ever remember singing is James Taylor’s You Got a Friend, because I liked that it said “Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall” in it. I grew up on oldies and Motown, then 80’s punk, then 80’s metal, then 80’s hip hop, then Seattle, then Blink shit, etc, etc.

4. I have been a lead singer in a classic rock cover band, a top 40/wedding band (Studio 54 in Dallas), and a 90’s rock band (Buzzfuel). I know every single word to Sean Paul’s Temperature, It’s the End of the World As We Know It, Eminem/Dre’s Without Me, and Jump Around. I think I know the complete words to around a thousand songs at this point.

3. I have two kids, Paul and Riley, who are already better at technology than you are. Seriously.

2. I am engaged to Kelly Grrl, my co-host, who I met while she was bartending and I was lead vocalizing with Buzzfuel at Cedar Street. But wait, there’s more: we are getting married in Playa del Carmen Mexico on Cinco de Mayo this spring. In June we move into the house we’re building.

1. I am older than I look, but younger than I am.

Well I guess I should take leave more often, because last night was hands down one of my favorite nights ever at Billy’s this year!

First of all, there were 20 teams playing – Holy Cow, that’s a record! Secondly, you guys laughed at my jokes, which caused me to make more of them, and thus a positive feedback cycle ensued. Finally, my new Wife Fo Life, Kelly Grrrl, was there with me to witness it all (and to throw down on the scoring, Thank Gawd). But probably the most exciting event last night was the happening of our Very First Tie For First Place.

As we came into R8, it was clear that the competition was intense. Yam Fantasy was the dark horse, buried in the standings for the most part until the end, where they laid down the Joker and swept into 3rd Place. But George, Your Order’s Ready and Let My People Go were neck and neck. The score breakdown shows how they were within one point of each other all night.

After tallying the final round, Kelly and I realized that something major was happening. I grabbed the extra questions, revealed the standings, and the Sudden Death Round ensued. The bar hushed as I read out the rules and began. Five questions on Random Knowledge. The teams craned their necks and furrowed brows. Pencils scribbled, and papers were pushed into my hands. We scored, checked, and double-checked. And it came down to one question on baseball. We looked at the paper. One team had a wrong answer scratched out and a correct answer filled in next to that! The most awesome way to win it all! George, Your Order Is Ready! George, Your Order Is Ready! George, Your Order Is Ready! The bar cheered, Let My People Go slumped but smiled, prizes and high-fives were handed out and beaming photos were taken.

Other notes – Trivia, I loved your suggestion on re-naming the Nickelback tune, but in the interests of not pissing off my readers, it shall not be repeated here. I’m sorry I had to even repeat Nickelback at all. Also, I definitely would do a movie entitled “JD and Ellen Page Make a Porno” except it would actually be a porno, not a sad study on two losers. And last but not least, neither my ass nor my mother’s ass was featured in our visual Round 5 last night!

That’s it for this week – we had a great time, and it’s so good to be back!

Chris LaRue (The R-U-E)

The warrior known now as Chris LaRue was born immortal in the Scottish highlands in the 1500's. He was able to keep his clan's secret for centuries until being discovered by Sean Connery in New York in 1985. LaRue escaped to live another day, and Connery played himself in the film adaptation of the encounter.

Chris enjoys origami unicorns, Irish whiskey (that isn't made by Protestants), and anything covered in queso.

Whenever I plug the Suggest-A-Round link on the GWD homepage, I tell you that, when suggesting your round, if you tell us where you regularly attend, we'll let you guest-host the round you suggested. I also add that you will pry the microphone out of my cold, dead fingers. However! This week, I shared hosting privileges for the first time. I'm not ashamed of this fact; I'm actually very proud.

Did I mention that the other host was none other than Jeopardy! überchamp Ken Jennings?

'Cause it was.

Yes, fellow Geeks/Drinkers, round six this week was presented by the man himself. Well, not live in person, but through my iPod, and I think that's still pretty cool. I'm a big Jeopardy! fan. I watch it every day, sometimes with my grandmother as a cool special bonding thing we do. I saw all of Mr. Jennings' initial wins, got swept up in the Jennings madness that was going on at the time. The guy was on the front pages of newspapers all over the country with his unprecedented win streak. I even cheered for him to beat Watson (that super-computer they built specifically to play the game), though was thoroughly unsurprised when he lost. All this to say, I was honored to have shared my valuable hosting time with the Champ.

Thanks to all of you at Billy's for letting me come out and host for you these last couple of weeks! I had a great time, and hope you'll all let me come back out sometime. JD, I know for sure that I'm there anytime you'll have me.

You guys have a great week, and be good to yourselves and each other.

--Chris

Many of you looked surprised when you walked into Billy's tonight and, rather than seeing your usual svelte Quizmaster, there was someone closely resembling Hank Williams Jr. sitting in his place. Rest assured, quiz faithfuls, that JD is doing just fine, and I have in no way kidnapped him and he is certainly not currently tied up in my attic while I regularly apply lotion to his skin in order to make it soft and pliable enough to make into a vest.

Ahem. I seem to have gotten carried away. Moving on...

I had so much fun, so thank you all for letting me sit in this week! I'll be back next week too, but again, you shouldn't worry because JD is totally fine and will be back after that with all of his skin still intact.

Carried away again. Last time, promise.

Things we learned tonight:

*Modern metal bands all kinda sound the same, even when they're covering radio pop songs

*Most of you really, really don't like Dubstep

*You do, however, really know your TV shows

*Many of you giggle inappropriately at the name "Motrin" for some reason. I don't know why; Bengay is so much funnier

*I once hit the floor because I was startled by the gunshot sounds in "Paper Planes" by MIA

Isn't it great that we all learned something?

I'll see you next week, same Bat-time, same Bat-channel. Until then, be good to yourselves and each other.

Your guest quizmaster,

--Chris
