Basketball. The sport of slum lords and their underprivileged tenants. A sport that needs to punish players regularly for their behavior on social media websites, their proclivity to fall down when they are touched and their tendency to shoot limo drivers. I miss the good old days of basketball. When lanky white dudes like Larry Byrd, Detlef Schrempf and Jerry West ruled the court. I miss the days when the scary black guys went by less threatening nicknames like “magic” and “shaq” and “the glyde”. I miss the days when basketball's biggest controversies were how many babies Shawn Kemp fathered and whether or not the Bulls would ever lose in the NBA finals. In conclusion, basketball, in it’s current version, is a miserable excuse for a sport. The only reason we watch is to cheer AGAINST that one team full of assholes and that is a real bad sign.

Our guests from down the road turned out to be conqueror’s and A Team Named Slickback went home with the grand prize. In a tie-breaker, Don’t Yell KKK in Public, Even at a Baseball Game took him second place over Caged Wisdom Saved My Life. In a real bonehead move, Woosah! Left before I could embarrass them with a tie-breaker, so Sailboaters Who Drink ended up with the “Thank God We Didn’t Come in Last Place” prize. Chris took home the Facebook free beer and Jannell won the email bonus prize. You’ve got just a couple more days to register for Rumble in the Pub, so get it done! Make sure you get on the Facebook page for a chance to win a free beer next week. I’ll see you all then! Cheers!

I have an announcement to make. Tonight a passion awoke deep inside of me. A passion to make sweet, sweet music in the way my forefathers did. A passion that will surely take me to far off lands like Tacoma, Everett, Spokane and maybe even Portland. Tonight, I retire the moniker that I selected when I began as a Geeks Who Drink quizmaster and officially begin my hip-hop career as R-Kenny. You can look for my first single “Titties on my Head” here shortly.

As our top teams gear up for Rumble in the Pub, I thought I’d use this week’s blog to teach a valuable lesson about Geeks Who Drink Pub Quizzes and to share a bit of advice on things to learn. The first rule of practicing for pub quiz, is you can’t practice for pub quiz. At Geeks Who Drink, we are professionals at the non-sequitor. Even if I give you the round’s theme, it’s likely that it has nothing to do with the questions that are actually in the round. For every time studying would give you the edge in a quiz, 5 times it wastes your time. A few other pro-tips are as follows. Always ask how many 16 point rounds there are. Sooner or Later rounds have been historically pretty easy and they are almost always the best round to joker. If you’re confident that you’re going to get 12 or more points in R2, always joker it. You all know that, at this point, R8 is a huge clusterfuck sometimes. Take the sure-fire 12 points and be happy. Last, but not least, if I ask a multi-part question with “Yes/No” or some other either or options, don’t guess. All “Yes” or all “No” unless you know the answer for sure. I can’t count the number of times I see teams get 1 or 0 points on those for guessing wrong. Generally, “Yes” and “Real” are the safer guesses.

Thursday was the night of the tie-breaker. Shit, I even dreamed that I had to do like four more tie-breakers and it NEVER ended! U.S.S Barry Goldwater won first place without any controversy, but it took Caged Wisdom Saved My Life a clutch tie-breaker guess to take home second place. Now we know for sure that there are too many goddamn cell phones in America. In our “Thank God We Didn’t Come in Last Place” tie-breaker, Loose Seals edged out Sergio “Finger Lickin’ Good “ Garcia in an epic Rock-Paper-Scissors duel. Both of our raffle winners came from Aluminum Falcons with Michael taking home his second email bonus prize in as many weeks and Tim winning the Facebook free beer. Lots of doings in Geeks Who Drink world right now. Make sure you register for Rumble in the Pub which starts next week and be sure you are making plans to come out for the BEST THEME QUIZ EVER in a couple weeks. That would be the Game of Thrones theme quiz at Rock Bottom in Bellevue on June 8th. Last but not least, make sure you click the like button over on the Facebok page for news, clues and a chance to win a free beer every week. Catch you next Thursday!
