Nate ()

Nate claims to be a nerd, not a geek (though he doesn't quite understand the difference). He reads graphic novels, is a walking IMDb, watches "Lost" on repeat, and enjoys a good reimagining (looking at you, BSG) but hates when George Lucas messes with the OT.

I think Ken Jennings has it out for my job. I imagine a world in which Ken Jennings' voice will follow us everywhere. Not only will he be hosting Geeks Who Drink (which will now be called "Geeks Who Drink Brought to You by Maphead), but he will be announcing sporting events, Saturday Night Live, and the How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Divorced Your Father. It will be a world filled with Jennings' slightly unsettling tenor ("Question ONNNE!").

Or maybe he just hosted this one round last night. But you can never be too sure...

The single worst moment at the quiz last night was me almost spilling my entire beer on my brand new computer. Fortunately for the computer (and unfortunately for me) I missed and (instead) spilled the entire thing on my lap. My "area" smelled like the back of the Colfax 15 for the remainder of the evening.

Other than that, the night went smoothly. The quiz was quizzed, and the answers were answered. Nobody broke that elusive 80 point mark, but the race was close.

Stoops McGoops took home third place, while the duo I'm Not Gay, But 5 Bucks is 5 Bucks took home second. Both teams are newbies to Three Lions, and we were extremely happy to have them join. Truth is, I let them win so they would like me/my bar more: just kidding just kidding just kidding (I'm kidding).

And the long time quizzers, no time first-placers, Kneel Before Zod took home the top prize. Congrats, gentlemen! Always nice to see teamwork, camaraderie, awesome Superman references, and hard work pay off! Huzzah!

Until next time, my quizlings!

Highland Tavern in Denver on Mondays at 8:00
Mike (That Guy in the Corner)

Mike was a faithful quizzer for almost three years who finally fell victim to the siren call of becoming a quizmaster.  Translation: Getting paid to eat, drink, and joke at the expense of others was simply too much to resist.  Also, talking about himself in the third person is a major turn-on.

At first glance Mike probably qualify as more drink than geek, but he'll put his nerd street cred up against anyone brave enough to accept the challenge.  We're talking played World of Warcraft at a "WORLD CLASS" level here, people.

There is, however, a soft spot reserved in his heart for good beer, bad puns, and obscure references so if you have any one of these to spare, come down to Highland Tavern and get your quiz on!

Now I realize that 99% of our country couldn't muster up two shits to give about soccer, but for those of you not in the know, that remaining 1% makes up a big part of the patronage at Three Lions Pub.  It was because of this, and my irrational fear of soccer hooligans, that we got started about five minutes late last night.  Not that any of you minded though, because you are all fuckin' awesome.

In my opinion, the number one perk to being a quizmaster is learning interesting new facts that may or may not be at all true.  It should be noted that when I say "may or may not", I actually mean "not in a million years", but it brings a smile to my face and you should all keep the ridiculous flowing.  It's the garbage that fuels my Mr. Fusion.  Here are my favorite factoids from last night:

  • Oingo Boingo is a contender to rank amongst the highest earning dead celebrities.  This raises a conundrum as I don't believe any of the members are actually dead, and I know for a fact that they represent the word celebrity in the loosest form imaginable.  Thanks goes out to 5 Queens in a Bar for inspiring me to read Oingo Boingo's Wikipedia page to research the matter further.
  • Peenis could potentially be thought of as a six-letter pain reliever.  At least, going forward in my future pick-up lines it will be.  Think of all of the potential delivery methods!  Credit goes to Bring Out the Gimp for my newfound popularity with the ladies.
  • Two of our tams last night disappointed me in epic fashion.  When asked for the highest grossing installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, not only did they recognize the existence of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but it was the correct answer.  To The Lazy Ninjas and This Economy's Makin' Me Thirsty, consider this your official notice of being off my Christmas card list.

Before we talk about the quiz itself, I wanted to take a brief moment to talk about the positive impact that dubstep has had on our society.  Please enjoy this numbered list; I'm sure you'll all agree:

  1.

Rikki Don't Lose That Wolfman jumped out to an early lead and kept a tight grip on it for the entirety of the evening.  They had a somewhat pedestrian round 8 and I thought that someone might be able to jump up and make them sweat a bit, but it was not to be.  When Bobcats and Weekly Football ended up in a tie for 2nd place, I got REALLY excited because dance-offs are like the best thing ever, but neither team was having any of that.  We ended up settling the gridlock with a rousing game of Hunter, Bear, Woman which is basically Rock, Paper, Scissors with 100% more awesome animations.  Bobcats was able to bring home the victory through the best of three contest and went home as the lucky winners of $25.

As always Three Lions, it was a pleasure and a privilege and fear not, your faithful quizmaster Nathan will return to your warm embrace next week.

OBAMA TOTALLY DROVE BY OUR BAR TODAY (at like 8am)! OBAMA WAS IN COLORADO! YOGURT. CATS. TIM TEBOW. WHITNEY HOUSTON. (I'm trying to see if this eventually generates traffic.)

It was a pretty awesome night at Three Lions Pub (but then again, it usually is). The night started off with some live music courtesy of the Upper Colfax Route 40 Music Festival. I didn't catch his name, but he seemed pretty jazzed to be there. It was like having my own opening act. I felt important.

I've decided (just this very second) to five out superlatives to tonight's teams:

MOST LIKELY TO DO POORLY IN ROUND ONE AND NEVER PLAY AGAIN: Asteroid Miners

MOST LIKELY TO WEAR A TOPICAL HALLOWEEN COSTUME: Is that yogurt on your pants? Or are you just happy to see me?

LEAST LIKELY TO BE OFFENDED IF I ACCIDENTALLY SAID "GUYS" INSTEAD OF "GAYS": Token Gays

MOST LIKELY TO ACCIDENTALLY GET A BLACK EYE WHILE PLAYING FLAG FOOTBALL IN THE KITCHEN: Black Eye-Rish

MOST LIKELY TO MAKE ME LAUGH DESPITE SHOWING UP LATE: We're Late and We're Not Even Going to Planned Parenthood

MOST LIKELY TO BE TIED FOR FIRST ALL NIGHT LONG, THEN GET SECOND AND THIRD PLACE RESPECTIVELY: The Shake Team, The Physical Act of Wolfman

MOST LIKELY TO SMOKE EVERYONE THANKS TO THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF SPACE JAM: The Drunken Clams

Quote of the night:

"We finally beat our arch enemies [the Wolfman], but we still didn't win." -The Shake Team
