A lone wolf, loose cannon cop on the edge who plays by his own rules.

Once again the Mellow Mushroom wasn’t so mellow, as we had tons of teams ready to geek it out for this week’s top spot.  Returning teams and new players filled out the roster so heavily that I had to call in the assistance of my lovely girlfriend to help me score, despite the fact that I promised that she could just hang out, get dinner, and have a few drinks.  Sorry hon, next time, I promise.  Geeks Who Drink pros Super Genius, Mayday Mayday, Chrysler LeBaron Love Child, and Something Obscure all made it out, as did Jolly Rancher Shiv, who switched it up on everyone by going as If Hall Eats Oates For Breakfast, Does That Make Him a Maneater?  While they weren’t able to christen the new name with a win, I understand that they’re just getting a feel for it, trying it out, so some adjustment time is expected.  That’s what Tebow needed before becoming our golden boy; at least, right up until a bigger golden boy came by and stole our hearts with his smile.  Have fun in New York, Tebow!

New teams I hadn’t seen before like Google Is Allowed, Right?, Macaroon, and 404 Team Not Found were spread out all over the bar and restaurant, which felt right, because it gave the quiz a grander scope for the evening.  For the amount of teams we had, the score consistently stayed extremely close, with single points between teams and multiple ties for first place throughout the night.  It was enough to keep me jazzed right up until our last audio round, The Voice of God & Other Roles, with nothing but Morgan Freeman’s soft yet powerful voice carrying us through the rest of the evening.  Once again, I’d like to apologize if there were any children by Round 7; I knew exactly what clip was going to be played when I say Wanted was on the playlist.  I looked around and didn’t see any, and the crowd didn’t seem too concerned, though, so I was happy to giggle at Morgan Freeman saying “Shoot this mother-fucker!” over and over again.  I even indulged you for repeats after the round was done, even though I knew exactly what you guys wanted to hear!

If you’re looking for a fun time, remember, we’ll be back next Tuesday, 7:30!  And while we have a good time, also remember that in all seriousness, Google or any other search engines accessesed during the game are strictly prohibited.

See you next time, gang!
Chris

One of the best parts of scoring the Geeks Who Drink rounds is running across a funny answer from a team that obviously didn’t have a clue about an answer.  I also get to see who wasn’t listening to the clues.  I thought we all knew that “posthumous” means “dead,” so in Round 1: Recently in Stuff, I was surprised to see that someone thought the rapper who made the posthumous hologram performance at Coachella was Snoop Dogg.  Apparently news involving Tupac Shakur holograms isn’t enough to interest some people out there.  But hey, I always felt that even if you don’t have a clue, you might as well guess.  In fact, in Round 3:  Say When SNL Stars, we had two teams decide the best way to get any points was to just answer Dana Carvey for every answer.  And hey, Jensen and Youngs each got one point for the round, so it’s better than nothing, right?

As for the game itself, we saw the return of Jolly Rancher Shiv and The Inkblots as they stayed within points of each other throughout the game, even tying for first at one point.  Ultimately, it was The Inkblots that eked out the win by just 2 points.  Super Genius made a strong showing throughout, but fell below Jensen in the final round.  Keep at it, guys!  You’re so close to placing it’s crazy!

I’ll be looking forward to seeing you all again next time at the Mellow Mushroom!

The Mellow Mushroom always has an assorted group of fun quiz contestants, and with the constant battle for the top spots tonight’s quiz was no exception.  Throughout the night we had a constant tie for third place, and in the end it was The Jedi Knights Who Say “Kni!” that came out on top by only a couple points between the next teams, Lab Drool and The Inkblots.  Since they were tied for 2nd, I finally got to have my first tiebreaker challenge, and I was glad the teams rose to the challenge for my Final Sudden Death Question!  I was kind of hoping we would have a spectacular dance-off, but it seemed like the idea was frowned upon by the teams who actually had to participate.  I’m nothing if not flexible; after all, I here for your entertainment.  But one of these days I’ll force some unlucky teams into the dance-off of their lives that they were never expecting!

Through quick thinking and quick writing, The Inkblots took home the second place prize, and congrats to them, but a tip of my hat still goes to the mighty competition that Lab Drool offered the rest of our worthy teams, especially since they were able to completely nail our first audio round, Earworms, featuring songs that bore into your head and will never, ever leave.  Not only did they get every name and artist of the songs correct, they Jokered that round too, which gave them a healthy lead throughout the game.  With Geeks Who Drink pros like Jolly Rancher Shiv, Hollywood Steve Squared, Trifle Above Par, and the Fuzzy Bunnies all in the running today, it was important to be on your A-game, so it was a good thing Lab Drool just couldn’t get those horrible tunes out of their heads over the years.  It was bound to pay off at some point, right?

I’ll be seeing you guys next week, with more questions, more songs, and more surprises.  And if we’re lucky, maybe we’ll have that dance off after all.  A man can dream, after all…

Love you, babies!
Chris
