It was a bittersweet night at Highland Tavern, as tonight marked our final appearance. It was also really fucking cold outside and after a week's worth of beautiful weather, this came as a nasty shock. But still, mostly because we would not be returning. I've only been a part of the Highland Tavernites for five weeks now, but we've become great friends and have found a handful of regular teams. I'd like to take a quick moment to thank those who met the bad news with a resounding chorus of boos; I think we've got the momentum to launch an Occupy movement, at least when the weather returns to last week's bliss.
Tonight's quiz had a worthy opponent in the competition for our patron's attention: the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Luckily, Colorado college basketball is awful and there was only a passing interest in the contest between Kentucky and Kansas. Apparently Kentucky emerged victorious and added another bullet point to the long list of things Kentucky can be proud of, right after fried chicken and um, horse racing? Regardless, it's still better than Kansas, although that's not really saying much.
Round one was bout Peanuts, Crackers, and Jacks and went pretty much as expected. Drinks Who Geek expressed the requisite level of remorse in being able to correctly name Jeff Dunham, and I respect them for that.
Our first audio round helped us relive our childhoods through the shitty music of those formative years. Rusty Snatch let me know how much they didn't care for my musical selections, and even though I don't select the music, I'd rather be accused of poor musical taste than have my team name be motivated by a corroded vagina. I'm not sure which team member was their namesake, so I'll just assume E) All of the above.
Round three gave our philosophy majors in the crowd (we had two!) some hope that their worthless major might yet pay dividends.
Then I broke the news that everyone had a 50/50 shot of getting the correct answer and didn't have to deal with the shame of wasting thousands of their dollars on an education that best prepares them on how to ask if people want fries with their value meal.
Major League Baseball starts back up this week and in celebration, round four was a before and after format about baseball and other stuff. Impressive performance here with the average score of 6.9. Scars could benefit from a little more Wheel of Fortune viewing, as the before and after concept was a bit lost on them. Even after they sat at my booth for the entirety of round 6 and asked me to repeat all of round 5. Every. Single. Question.
Our visual round showed a piece from a board game, all you had to do was name the board game in question. Not too hard, right? News flash, That Guy With The Rapey Build, Darth Vader was not a game piece in Wizard Chess. Credit to Drinks Who Geek for their perfect score!
Round six had to do with Broncos and Colts, but nary a question about the football teams in question, how tricky of us! Apparently the ruse worked as our teams averaged less than 2.5 here. Study up on your 3 Ninjas knowledge for the next time we try to slip one by you.
The second audio round gave the music geeks in the crowd another chance to shine. We asked you to identify the bands that were still releasing new music even after becoming irrelevant years prior. Favorite answer of the round? After listening to a clip from the Beastie Boys, Late For Your Own Birthday Party wrote down Salt-N-Pepa and confirmed that it's time for Mike D and company to hang it up.
Round 8, the great equalizer. Dick Out Double Check had jokered early and help a solid lead for most of the night; could they withstand the coming onslaught of jokers? Even with a couple of strong performances from That Guy With The Rapey Build and Unibrows, they held on for a four point victory with Rapey squeaking out with 2nd place by a mere point. I REALLY wanted a dance to be our last impression at Highland, but even after double checking the scores, there was no tie to be found.
It's been fun Highland Tavern, and I'm sad to see our romance end. If the idea of a quiz-less Monday is an unacceptable idea to you, let me tell you where you can get your fix without having to drive across the entire state to do so:
British Bulldog: 2052 Stout Street, Denver; 8:00pm
Caveau Wine Bar: 450 E. 17th Street, Denver; 8:00pm
Ernie's Bar & Pizza: 2915 W. 44th Avenue, Denver; 8:00pm
Prohibition: 504 East Colfax Avenue, Denver; 8:00pm (Starts April 16th!)
The Rio Grande: 1525 Blake Street, Denver; 7:30pm
Wymans No. 5: 2037 E. 13th Avenue, Denver; 7:00pm
As for me, I'll be getting a few weeks off until I find somewhere else silly enough to take me in. If you're interested in hearing where I land, feel free to friend me on Facebook, or simply send me a message, and I'll keep you informed.
Stay classy, San Diego Highland Tavern.

If you've spent more than ten minutes in Colorado, then you've almost certainly had someone tell you that the weather can be a little...temperamental. Well yesterday was no exception and brought us wind gusts nearing 90 MPH in some places. Not such a bad thing, until you hear about the wildfire that got going and ended up evacuating a bunch of mountainfolk near Conifer. The sky full of fire and brimstone certainly didn't deter our faithful band of quizzers from coming out to Highland Tavern tonight where our 9 teams duked it out for geek supremacy.
Last week we had a round that was full of factoids that you might be embarrassed to admit knowing. You know, things about herpes meds, hemorrhoid cream, and Nickelback. Tonight we started off with something even more cringe inducing: Hello Kitty. "Credit" goes to Grisanti Family Reunion and It’s Keanan's Birthday Yaaaaaaay! for coming out with a perfect score. I hope the shame is worth it.
Our music round was all about songs with whistling in them. I feel like I should take a moment here to discuss quiz strategy. As all of you should know, rounds 2 and 8 are worth double points and make for excellent joker candidates. That said, you still have to do well on the round to really make that double round score shine. I won't name names, but we had 3 teams that shot their load early and cost themselves a few points. Nothing so drastic that it would have changed the final money winners, but food for thought for next time.
Round 3 was a speed round on states that Obama won by a wide margin in the 2008 general election. Most of you did well in identifying the more liberal states in the union. I did enjoy reading the answer sheet from team Dizzy Lizzys, who decided that Kansas, Georgia, Nebraska, and Oklahoma were their choices as Democratic strongholds.
Counterfeits and fakes were the name of the game in round 4. In response to the question about the 1988 movie mimicking E.T., Veggie Beer answered My Huge Erection. I'm not sure if they're trying to implying that young children have embarked on a mission to save their penis from government authorities, but that's the story I'm sticking to.
Our visual round was a double or nothing format on one eyed movie characters. You got one point for naming the movie and two points for naming the character. Teams did pretty well with this, averaging just over 9 points across the board. That said shame on any of you who weren't able to come up with One Eyed Willie from the Goonies. His name is ONE EYED WILLIE for fuck's sake.
For as well as our teams did on the visual round, the same cannot be said for round 6 and its eight questions on the British monarchy. There were some rumblings and grumblings regarding the wording on the question about King George III and which war gave him the reputation of being a tyrant, don't forget to stop by the Errorogenous Zone and lodge your complaint in a formal manner!
The second audio round was all about Julia Roberts movies. Is there any story more heartwarming than a hooker-turned-princess? It really gives the young women of today something to strive for in their personal and professional lives.
Our random knowledge round proved to be the difference maker tonight; both for our prize winners as well as settling personal vendettas. Et Tu Josh and Allison? and Ben Smith were locked in a tight competition for the entire night, that is until Ben Smith almost doubled their score in round 8. A thorough knowledge of the Song of Ice and Fire series sealed the victory for tonight's winners as they were the only team to get more than one of the titles correct. Congratulations to Keanan and Eli for being that much nerdier than their contemporaries.
And that's it! We'll be back next week for another round of hot quizzing, hopefully with less wind and burning of the countryside. I've put together a little Facebook page for our quiz night, which can be found here. If you want high resolution photos, input on the night's music, as well as so much more, make sure to like the page and get in on the ground floor!

Hello Highland Tavernites! There was a lot to celebrate on this date in history, March 19, 2012. Let it forever be remembered that this day marked the impending departure of Tim Tebow from the Mile High City. At long last, the two years of intellectual regression appear to be coming to an end and praise is to Him, John Elway, for shipping this plague the fuck out of town. To celebrate this blessed day, we had ourselves a raucous quiz night that highlighted just how devious you people can be.
Round 1: Mystery Round
High Score: 8 by three teams // Average Score: 6.25
Tonight's mystery round featured questions whose answer related to a Monopoly playing piece. I'm going to guess that those teams who guessed, "Singing in the Rain" as the Fred Astaire musical have either never played Monopoly in their lives.
Round 2: Band Name Band Name
High Score: 8 by !Sportz! & Shredders // Average Score: 4.75
Music rounds are often hit or miss and let's just say tonight was seated firmly in the miss column. Although their eight line, insult laden rant against the round and my existence was a humorous read, I had to award Ménage A Twat a zero for their efforts.
Round 3: Say When - Food Groups
High Score: 6 by Grisanti Family Reunion // Average Score: 4.25
Most teams do a good job of not screwing themselves out of a point by stopping the action early. Stress the words, most teams. I'm looking at you Keanan. That's just karma coming back to bite you for that atrocity of a team name, Mike Loves Tim Tebow.
Round 4: The Cat's In the Dreidel and the Silver Spoon
High Score: 8 by three teams // Average Score: 6.63
I'll admit, while you screwed the pooch on the music round, you all redeemed yourself with your lyric knowledge. Personally, I'd have preferred is Skee Lo had wished for a 6'4" iguana.
Round 5: Golden Age of Suck (90's TV)
High Score: 8 by five teams // Average Score: 7.63
Only a trio of teams' lack of knowledge of television classic Melrose Place stopped this from being a perfect round across the board. I blame you, Aaron Spelling.
Round 6: A Round You Probably Don't Want to Ace
High Score: 6 by Grisanti Family Reunion // Average Score: 2.25
Here are the correct answers for this round from Grisanti Family Reunion:
Sure, this round might have won you tonight's quiz, but it seems like a pretty solid loss in the game of life. Congratulations.
Round 7: If He's So Handsome, Why Is He Still Single?
High Score: 8 by Mike Loves Tim Tebow?& Henry // Average Score: 6
Who doesn't love George Clooney? Let me make a recommendation for all the teams who guessed Ocean's Eleven for the Fantastic Mr. Fox clip: Go watch Fantastic Mr. Fox immediately. Awesome movie.
Round 8: Random Knowledge
High Score: 12 by three teams // Average Score: 10.29
Everyone did well on tonight's final round, but the damage had already been done. Hearty congratulations go to Grisanti Family Reunion for their victory tonight. I can pretty easily envision how they must celebrate their victories. Chock full of Nickelback, boy bands, rabbit vibrators, Astroglide, and a Valtrex cocktail to wash it all down. A winner is you!
See everyone next week!
