Quizmaster and quiz-takers were shocked this evening when Evening Star management announced to a packed house that this could be the last quiz in the No. 9 Lounge. The reason conveyed related to logistics and business matters as determined from the front office. There is talk of moving us to Thursday night.
So, in that solemn spirit, we did a collective hug and plowed through 8 exciting rounds of quiz. And this quiz had a special twist, round 4 was a 16-point round. Normally we only have two rounds of 16 points so the opportunity to earn extra points was much appreciated and capitalized on by several of our 8 teams.
But no team capitalized better than Nick Rivers also Stevie Wonder, Linda Ronstadt and if time permitting, Frank Sinatra, a team that has won before. If memory serves, Team Nick won their first game with just two players. Tonight they had four and still took home the $50 gift card.
In second place was Dr. Infinity’s Turncoat. Previously known as Moe’s Hoes, this group of farmers, beatniks and all around cool cats played their joker well and damn-near aced the 16-point musical round.
In third place by a hair was I'm Hot, Probably Because You're Wearing Shorts. They missed second place by two points. The stalwart of this team has actually scored more points - on his own - but it was still a nice showing.
Burnt Beans, a five-time winner came in fourth place with 65. They also missed second place by a hair, but a thicker hair than Hot.
Xanadu, the perpetual rival to Burnt Beans, came in fifth with a lackluster 60 points. Last week, with only two players but a harem of sirens, they did much better. As a matter of fact, I think they’ve done better in every game but this one. The cancellation news hit us all in different ways.
Get Into My Dreams and Out of My Bar was one of our early winners when we started the quiz in Del Ray. The founding member of this team use to shellac Team Vintage and Del Ray Beached. But the celebrity status was too much to handle and the team broke up after two games. They have never been the same.
Duncan and DeWitt – oh man it was a real reunion tonight. These guys have been with us from the beginning too, albeit off and on. It was nice to see D&D again and their seventh place finish was nothing to be ashamed of as they introduced new players to the game )perhaps when they've been away they have been recruiting).
Last but not least was Team Black Irish. Always a delight to see this team. They worked hard and brought a third person along (who turned her head just before the picture was taken). As teams learn, you need to augment your weaknesses and B.I. was making those adjustments.
Be sure to watch the Evening Star’s facebook page or sign-up for Geeks Who Drink email alerts. We’ll get back on the schedule in no time. But being Washington, DC, I think a letter-writing campaign to the Star's corporate office is in order. Just sayin’.
Till next time friends – and hey, if you want to do a private party – now would be an excellent time as this quizmaster is going to get pretty restless after a few quiz-free Sundays.

Finally . . . one of our most regular teams pulled in a decisive win Sunday night at the Evening Star’s No. 9 Lounge. Eighty-two points may very well be the highest score any team has ever scored at our cozy venue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, VA. There were other great scores as well – as nearly everyone aced and jokered the 16-point, round two event regarding 8-bit 80’s music. Let’s just say it was an interesting night from start to end, to follow-on end.
Brett was on his second weekend of training however your truly was responsible for the for the anticlimactic end. Yes, when you put scores in the joker column, those scores will not update. Nobody wants to know the quiz is run but nearly everyone noticed that the Round 7 scores sounded exactly like the Round 8 scores. A quick adjustment and a re-sort didn’t change the leader but it did save us from a second place tie-breaker. Team, I didn't Realize How Much Came Out, I Only Felt a Little Bit of Dribble Down My Chin, edged Nick Rivers, Linda Rondstadt and Time Permitting, Frank Sinatra by two points.
The other five teams turned in scores above 68. As a matter of fact, one of our repeat winners, Xanadu, came in last place with 69 points. But Xanadu had a lot on their mind as towards the end of the game, their guests had arrived: yeah, something like five lovely ladies who were well-into a party night and it was only 7:30. Yes, a birthday was being celebrated. That celebration went on beyond the quiz and involved some impromptu karaoke in the No. 9 Lounge. Ah ha.
Congratulations to The Antics (our email winner), Village Idiots, Santorum’s Sweater Vest and The Anarchists. In any other town last night, your scores would have day.
Check us out next week, 6 pm as we do another Geeks Who Drink quiz.
Oh, and to whoever asked about private events – as mentioned during the quiz, we do them and we do them well. You can find out more information by emailing info@geekswhodrink.com or feel free to txt me at 202-746-4552.

There’s a thing called the QuizMaster Bible. This bible is basically the document that tells the quiz host (AKA quizmaster) how to run the show. And yes, there is a section on how to deal with hecklers. However, there is not a subchapter to that section that tells you how to deal with drunk and emotionally-challenged hecklers. No worries, I have the background, I will write the subsection based on tonight’s experience.
Yeah, so aside from the freakshow at the bar, we had a pretty good night of quizzing. Xanadu, who has missed a couple of weekends, came back in strong fashion, winning the quiz with 76 points. Burnt Beans, who has a record of 5 wins and has beaten Xanadu before, came in second with 67 points.
An impressive 64 points was turned in by the solo operation: One is the Loneliest Number. He’s had team members before but I don’t think they’ve added much to the answer sheet. My guess is he needs to borrow one of the in-laws from Burnt Beans and his team would be perfect. Or . . . bring in a leggy teammate and introduce her to the quizmaster. Either way, he would easily get an extra five points and contend for second place, if not first.
Santorum Sweater Vest was a refreshing addition to the evening. We always have a team in the room for the first time. Serious; there has not been a weekend yet when there hasn’t been someone who is asking; “what the fuck is this?” However, in this case, SSV knew why they were there. There were some gals in the very back who were asking the before, quoted question, but that’s another story.
Which brings us to our last place finisher: Team Awesome. OMG, where to start? OK, agreed, we won’t.
We missed our Hambergers and others but hope to see them next week. And hey, I think there was a Del Ray Beached sighting tonight. Will we see them again? If so, perhaps it will be next Sunday, 6 pm, the No. 9 Lounge in Alexandria’s Evening Star Café.
