I'm a private school debate coach, video game nerd, conoseur of fine intoxicants, and overall Alex Trebek wannabe.  One time I killed a man just to watch him die.  I like to spin some mad quiz and if there is a trophy/validation/glory on the line, chances are I'll watch it, compete in it, or host it.

A huge thank you to our aspiring QMs Jason and Stevie for agreeing to be tortured by the West End crowd.  A huge thank you to our West End crowd for torturing the noobs.  It’s always good to have fresh meat, isn’t it?

The pre-game quiz was won by Prom Night Dumpster Babies who finally figured out how to answer a tie-breaker question that didn’t result in a dance off! Oh wait…

Die, Reddit, Die, which is German for The Reddit, The, kicked the night off to a strong start and one the bonus in the evil, devil, and fruits round.  Classiest gay joke of the night goes to Rattle Snakes & Condoms, Two Things I Don’t Fuck With for their guess that the average man needs 8 cups of fruit a day, and then under that answer wrote ‘swallow’.  Why yes sir, may I please have another?

Y’all nailed Jesus.  Nailed him. We averaged a 14 out of 16 for the round and everyone jokered it.  Yes, be proud for identifying the most obvious BSB song EVER.  Y’all did very well at Balderdash, though next time I’m letting you come up with the definitions.

A few science notes: Kryptonite is not on the periodic table of the elements, it is on the periodic table of things that can keep another comic book movie from being made and shoved down our throats.  When I ask for the full name of elements, give it to me (looking at you Cherries on Top).  Au is the symbol for gold, as in “hey, you, quit stealing my gold”. Ag is for silver as in “Ag. I wish this shit was gold”.

Fun things I learned tonight:

  • Hamlet was a woman.
  • Backgammon is a popular dice game that was once a game show hosted by Alex Trebek.
  •  Movies about mothers is way too easy of a category.
  • Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire is an unnecessarily long movie title.
  • I read questions better than Ken Jennings (and apparently half the metroplex).

This brings us to the end game: Robert, learn to dance. Take lessons. Come on out to the G-borhood. Do SOMETHING because we’re going to keep having this problem.  Prom Night Dumpster Babies tied with Keep Austin Vindicktive for the win, and after two sets of tiebreakers, a dance-off ensued. Kathryn single-handedly took down team Reddit to claim the top prize- you think she’s a man? She’s only a boy. J That Team With Like 12 People took home a solid third but guys, stick around so I can snap a pic, will ya?

Homework this week:

  • June 6th- Mad Men quiz at the West End Pub.  Doors open at 7, quiz starts at 8.
  • Read Crime and Punishment, chapters 1-5.
  • You likey blog? You likey blog on Facebooks? Click the ‘like’ button, show J-Warr you care.
  • Call your mom. Tell her you love her. Then tell her I left my cell phone charger on the nightstand and I’m gonna need that back.

Quiz Schedule

Jason (JWarr)

I'm a private school debate coach, video game nerd, conoseur of fine intoxicants, and overall Alex Trebek wannabe.  One time I killed a man just to watch him die.  I like to spin some mad quiz and if there is a trophy/validation/glory on the line, chances are I'll watch it, compete in it, or host it.

Two of my favorite things in life happened during this quiz: current events trivia and questions about queers.  Yay to The Galavanting Ents for knowing when the APA stopped calling us gays crazy- remember, I’m not insane because I love men and their butts. I’m insane AND I love men and their butts.  I’ve decided for my birthday I want a Rube Goldberg machine.  I need an unnecessary amount of mechanics to happen in my house before coffee is made. Clearly. What I don’t want is more Xtreme cover bands.  I love E.  It should never be left off the beginning of words unnecessarily.

Here’s some shit I learned:

  • Whitney Houston died in 2011, not 2012.
  • The name of the actress who played Vanessa on the Cosby show was That Black Girl. I’m not going to say that answer was racist, I am going to say it was racial. Winning is Too Mainstream, being a shocking racist is also too mainstream, just so we’re clear.
  • Y’all watch way too much TV- all but 4 teams earned a perfect score.  Just You and Me Buddy confused Family Guy with new ABC comedy called Family.
  • The Sandinistas are now from Mexico says Pi/30 Radians of Kevin Bacon

This was easily one of the closest, most competitive quizzes in the history of quiz. We had a 3-way tie for 3rd place broken on a tiebreaker question: Did You Seau Junior Died? Band and The Amazing Analrapists were left behind as Just You and Me Buddy rose above to claim the bronze.  Then, another tie for first place between We Wish We Knew How to Quit You and The Galivanting Ents refused to be broken. Seriously. I asked them five questions, they both got the same 3 right. I then asked them the same double-tiebreaker question.  They both answered 70 million. Fine. You don’t want to break the tie. Fine. DANCE BITCHES! And dance they did. We Wish We Knew How to Quit You certainly knew how to quit the dance- Robert saw he was outmatched early on, paving a victory for The Galivanting Ents. Oh, did I mentioned that We Wish We Knew How to Quit You had a joker misfire? If they believed in themselves in the music round, we would have avoided this whole epic event.

Good job class, I’m very impressed.  Don’t forget your homework for next week:

  • Wednesday, June 6th will be our next specialty event- The Mad Men quiz! Start dry cleaning your skinny ties now. Yes, we play for cash, yes we are playing it here!

For the first time in quiz history, SPF Hippo started the night out in last place with 2 points.  The round was about the #2, so I’m chalking this up as a strategic decision to be thematic rather than just sucking at the questions. Mighty Morphin Flower Arrangers took an early lead going 8 for 8 on the first round.

The music round featuring hunger and games left me starving for right answers. And a little bloated. My Spoon is Too Big! Said that Lady Gaga’s Love Game was written by Kesha (I refuse to put dollar signs in people’s names because I’m cheap).  Bazinga Gabe scored a 2 in the round and promptly left.

Our Sci-Fi Say When experience improved now that there are penalties involved for stopping the question early.  Once Got Busy in a Burger King Bathroom shot their load early and stopped me after the clue “Egyptian temple” and guessed Stargate.  It was a good guess, but had you let me finish reading the damn question, you would have known it was The Fifth Element.  Despite protesting the format, Correction: Dick in an Urn scored the first perfect score I’ve seen in a Say When round.  Good job!

And now, my favorite part- the history rangefinder round.  The following teams will forever have my love for thinking I’m way younger than I am: Dick Clark is Dead- Well Played, Magans, Dark Side of the Obsidian, and Here for the Beer, who all think I am still in my mid-20s. SPF Hippo thinks I’m 35 already. How dare you.

A fight to the finish after a round on LOLKillers, a before-and-after football experience, some movie clips on suicide being painless with no Alan Alda, and the round of random crap left Correction: Dick in an Urn on top, Fusion in second, and Mighty Morphin Flower Arrangers  in third.  Congratulations to Ex Pat Heros, who only played two rounds and still managed to beat a team.
