Well, we had a good run, but because Tommy Doyle’s is closing this weekend, last night was the last ever Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz there. Since it was the final quiz though, we had to send it out with a bang. No really, there was a bomb scare on the Harvard campus earlier in the day. Apparently, when Harvard students aren’t ready for their final exams, they call in bomb scares. Don’t they know they’re all going to get A’s though? To the Harvard students who pulled off this stunt, Imma let you finish, but when it comes to bombings Harvard alumnus Theodore John Kaczynski can’t be beat.

On our final night, 15 teams assembled for questions on giraffes, pigs, geese, and some other non-animal stuffs. (Seriously, where the fuck were you all last month when I had just three teams show up?) For the third week in a row, the members of Tick, Tock Someone Didn’t Study for Finals won the quiz with a total of 80 points. They can keep their streak going if they follow me to my next venue (details below). In second place was The Rent is Too Damn High, followed by a three-way tie for third between We Woke Up Like Dis, I Bombed My Final, and If Every Night Was Like Tonight, We Wouldn’t Go Out of Business. Though I’m not quite sure more 15 team nights would have made up for the rumored 70% hike in rent.

In sixth place, with 69 points, was The Haaavaahd Social Club, then Seymour Butts, A Falcon With a Cap on its Head, and Hong Kong Next Week With Yankee. Tenth went to The All the Way Dawgs, eleventh to Ebony and Ivory, twelth to Drew Faust Drew Furious, and thirteenth to Dance Dance Status Quo. The Vegetarians and Northern Lights rounded out the standings.

The first round was titled On the Sixth Round of Quiz-mas and had eight questions on geese and laying. That was followed by an audio round where each answer had the word faith either in the song title or the artist name. Round three was a multiple choice round on famous books where if you guessed A for every answer, you’d have done pretty well.

Next was a round on giraffes, where I asked the question, “What retail mascot…?” and a whole bunch of you guys wrote down the retail store name. The visual round showed parking garage scenes from eight different movies and TV shows that the Geeks had to identify. Round six was about how winter is coming, where the team of astronomy students could not get the analemma question right. After that was the second audio round, this one on famous pig characters, followed by the random knowledge round.

Thanks to everyone who came out to last night’s quiz. For those wondering, I will be taking over the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at the Hong Kong in Harvard Square for at least the next six weeks, but please keep an eye on our @GWDSchedulebot Twitter account to see if they’ll be canceling on Christmas and/or New Year’s Eve. You can also find me on the Facebooks, where you can send me love letters, pictures of dinosaurs, or tell me about this awesome beer you’ve discovered. I hope you all had as much fun coming to the quiz as I did hosting it.

I’ll get it out right now, last night was the second to last Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Tommy Doyle’s. TD’s is closing later this month, so we’ll be having one more quiz next week and that’s it. That’s one more chance to make Ted Kaczynski, grade inflation, and cheating scandal jokes. One more chance at free beers and prizes. One more chance to hear me host from the site of the OG House of Blues. To all my adoring and loving fans (which I was surprised to learn that there are about 5x as many of you as I had originally thought), I’ll have a new venue in the near future. Just stay tuned.

Last night’s quiz had rounds on sex noises, the Constitution, current events, and much more. It also had the improbable—zero prizes for either of the two taters teams. Winning the quiz was Is There Apartheid in Heaven?, who narrowly beat out Tyler Perry’s: Mandela Goes to a Funeral and Nacho Cheese Boners. Tatertar: The Last Taterbender and So Long and Thanks for All the Taters took fourth and fifth, followed by Puzzles, Pants Brownies, and Aim High Score Low. In 1st Place With 1 Million Points and Franks rounded out the standings.

The first round was themed E-I-E-I-O, and all eight answers began with one of those three letters. That was followed by an audio round themed I Hope Your Neighbors are Heavy Sleepers, which shouldn’t require any further explanation. Round three was a multiple choice round on the U.S. Constitution, where none of you got the question right about order of succession beyond the president and vice president.

My trainee Zach took over at this point, and he read you a Recently In Stuff round, a before and after round that had cars in them, and the random knowledge round where you learned that there is such thing as a Tutti-Frutti flavored condom (however, the cake batter flavor doesn’t exist). In between those rounds were a visual round on famous overall-clad film and television characters, and an audio round with Patrick Warburton clips.

Apartheid got off to the early lead with 15 points on the first audio round, which they very wisely jokered. They, as well as Tyler Perry, aced the visual round, while Tyler Perry and Nacho Cheese got perfect scores on the second audio round. They both scored 14s on the random knowledge round, along with Puzzles.

Thanks to all who came to play the quiz. We have one more week left, so come back next Monday to make it the best Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz Tommy Doyle’s has ever seen.

I had this great conversation over the Thanksgiving holiday with a friend who used to work in government PR, and we both agreed that the worst job right now is that of Rob Ford’s press secretary. The deeper the whole that Rob Ford digs himself into, the more his press secretary is going to get shat on, even if it’s a new hire brought on to replace the already departed one. When it comes time for someone to take the fall for a government official’s behavior, the press secretary is going to be the first to go. And that person will become untouchable for everyone else in government. It is a lose-lose situation.

But for those who didn’t rage too hard over the Thanksgiving break and still had something left in the tank to come to the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz, well the odds were in their favor. Five teams gathered to answer questions about rhymeless words, world cities, pitching, and much more. And after the eight rounds were over, 2 Fast, 2 Soon? stood alone at the top with 82 points. Not Gonna Win This Week and 2 Soon 2 Laugh tied for second, with Not Gonna Win taking the digits of pi tiebreaker contest. Penguin Posse followed them and 2 Fast, 2 Furious, 2 Flammable rounded out the standings.

The first round was on words that do not have a rhyme, including golf, wolf, zigzag, chimney, and polka. The teams had fives and sixes all around on this one. Our first audio round was themed Rise and Shine, and it had eight songs with either rise or shine in the title. The Geeks were solid on this one—one 15, two 14s, and a 13. Bravo.

The third round was a sooner or later round on world cities, including Toronto. One perfect score after the first round of clues got one team a 16 on this one. Next was a round on pitching, from elevator pitches, to baseball pitches, to pitcher plants, to the film Pitch Perfect. Two perfect scores on this one.

Our visual round showed eight film scenes of females wearing a man’s clothes after sleeping with him. Round six was on Hebrew and Yiddish words, terms, and phrases. This included three words for a penis and the Yiddish word for “slippery place,” making the round a lot dirtier than you all were probably expecting it to be.

“Hey sexy, I’d like to introduce my shvantz to your glitch,” said no mensch, ever.

The second audio round was on movies and a TV show synopsized by Honest Trailers. Four of the teams aced this one, so solid job there. The random knowledge round had questions on Costco, Homey Da Clown, and the Madea film series

The point difference between first and last place was only 9 points, so 2 Fast 2 Soon didn’t exactly flog the competition. Not Gonna Win picked up the 15- and 16-point scores on rounds two and three, but faltered on the fifth, sixth, and seventh rounds. 2 Soon 2 Laugh, in contrast, aced rounds four, six, and seven, but lacked confidence on their round three answers leading them to miss out on the chance to double their score.

Thanks to all who came and played the quiz. Have great weeks everyone and see you all next Monday!
