Oh me, oh my, what an incredible evening! Our small bar was packed to standing room only with 11 amazing teams last night and all I've got to really say is how much fun I had last night. This was quite the welcome way to celebrate the end of finals and my first year in grad school. Hooray for drunken nerdiness!
Also, thank you for being cool with me playing all 80's tunes last night; I simply couldn't help myself. That being said, I love you guys for singing along with Europe, Talking Heads, and Hall & Oates. Good on you for having similar tastes.
We had a round hosted by Geeks Who Drink + Jeopardy legend Ken Jennings last night. No, the man himself didn't grace us with his presence, but a recording of his vocal patterns via a laptop microphone did. Apart from royally screwing up which show(s) Mike O'Malley hosted on Nickelodeon (Mo!) and not knowing that The Price Is Right began in the 70's, no one knew who beat Ken Jennings in the Ultimate Tournament of Champions. Here's a shortlist of things that apparently beat KJ:
-A robot.
-Wilson, the computer.
-Watson.
-The robot from that Matthew Broderick movie about war.
-Darrell Hammond.
Sadly, I didn't receive any Sean Connery insult on paper, but I'm pretty damn sure we shouted out all of them over the course of the round.
Notes on how to truly stump quizzers: ask about Shakespearean female title characters (I'm willing to argue that MacBeth would count) or founders of punk music labels. That being said, I'm sure I could ask about almost any record label and you'd go braindead. Goodness.
Again, thanks for coming out and making last night a phenomenal quiz night. I hope to see you again next week at Trifecta on 3rd. Show up early for seating (seriously, things are getting crowded, you should show up early) and for the $3 pizza specials. Until next time, cheers!

The time of finals have come upon me once more, but I'm happy to let you know that I won't be bitching about school again until the fall. Huzzah.
Last night was uh-mazing and you all helped keep my spirits up in these deeply depressing times. From our Mystery Round on Billy Shakespeare (with nothing about that badass Doctor Who episode) to our round on wubwubwubwub (dubstep), last night's quiz seemed like quite the challenge, as our highest score was 62.
Xtreme Covers turns out to be exactly what comes to mind when one reads the word xtreme: utter bullshit. Sometimes I hate my generation and the bullshit music that gets created. I would sympathize more with you quizzers about the higher scores of 8 on the round, but team Foster the Penis - Pumped Up Dicks scored an excellent 14 points. My empathy dropped off the Earth at that point.
I was hardly surprised during our I'll Earn When I'm Dead round when you didn't even think to guess that Dr. Seuss, Albert Einstein, Jimi Hendrix, and Charles Schulz still make mad stacks in the afterlife. Not one of you thought of Hendrix. Shame on you! Also, to the team that put Liza Manelli: she's not dead; just FYI.
Thanks again for coming out this week and I hope to see you next time for our lovely quiz. Show up early for pizza and drink specials, as well as a good seat. Again, seating is pretty limited, so arrive early! Have a wonderful week. I'll see you on the other side of finals. Until next time, cheers!

Oh goodness, with Bon Iver, Black Keys & Arctic Monkeys, and The Avengers beginning last night, Austin was a pretty bumpin' place, but Trifecta on 3rd was packed to the brim last night with quizzers and Texas sports fans alike. Thanks for making it freaking awesome!
So, according to the highway signs, it's Work Zone Awareness Week in Austin (who knew?) with the lovely tip: "don't barrell through work zones." In honor of this momentus week, I asked our quizzers to write some haikus, perhaps in hopes that the state will adopt one. Here's the best three:
From team Double J's:
Stop! Don't hit the crew
Working to improve our roads
Let's all use caution.
From team Double J's:
Hey y'all - drive safely
Kick-ass road crews are working
Smooth driving, rejoice!
From team It's All Boop!
No Lottery win
Work Zone Awareness and pain
Oh Lottery when?
I hope y'all enjoyed the evening as much as I did. I loved shooting your hopes and dreams down during our Say When: Sci-Fi movies round. Don't say "stop" after the first clue when the first clue is "Egyptian Temple." That could be Stargate or The Fifth Element or even Alien vs. Predator. That being said, you can always yell "stop" when the first clue is "Trade Dispute." No other film can pull that shit other than George Lucas in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
We'll be back next and every Wednesday and Trifecta on 3rd. Be sure to show up early for $3 pizza specials and $15 pitchers of Circle Brewery beers. Until next time, cheers!
