I was born and raised in Texas, love the pursuit of useless knowledge and a well-aimed pun. I'm married to a local media superstar and have the most adorable kid in the world (seriously, it's not even a contest). I'm also a bit of a beer snob and was on a team that tied for 84th at Geek Bowl VI (Team Do You Like My Sweater?). And I dress like a colorblind four-year-old.

Tonight started with a SPLASH as Pat promptly spilled his water all over his table, chair, phone and half the floor. Whew! Despite the soggy start, we had great fun tonight!

We tested your knowledge of current events in Round 1, Recently In Stuff, with questions on everything from David Beckham to the elections in Pakistan and also the sad, sad, sad departure of Stefon from SNL. This is really distressing to me, so let's move on.

Round 2, A Cardiologists iPod, was a fun one with songs and artists invoking the heart. Oh, and it had only one song that came out in the last 20 years or so. The teams that did well on this round wound up in the top 3 at the end of the night, so... listen to your oldies sometimes, kids.

We had a Sooner or Later Round 3 tonight, Next Stop Wherever, with questions on train stops challenging you to name the cities where said train stops are located. Sooner or Later rounds are always tricky, because overconfidence can really bite you in the ass if you're not careful. Isn't that true of overconfidence in general, though. I think we've all learned something here.

Round 4 turned the rules of spelling on its head with Screw Your 'I Before E' - and some of you tried a leeeeeeetle too hard to make Celine Dion fit the theme. Also, there are OTHER Canadian women who are singers. Damn. (None of them were on Neighbours, by the way. I don't think.)

Everyone got a perfect score on Round 5. You really know your suits of armor. Guess all those SCA matches really paid off, y'all.

We almost went down the primrose path of perversion for Round 6, Huh Huh, You Said 'Oral Tradition', but it turned out to be about folklore. Oh well. You're just lucky I didn't bust out my Jackalope impression, which is just as awful as the original (with 100% less Dave Coulier. You're welcome).

Round 7, Reel Wisdom, was a stumbling block for some of you, but luckily it was worth 16 points so there was plenty of room for error/brainfarts/sheer lack of knowledge. Also, that may be the first time the C-word has been blared so loud in the Lion and Rose. Four times!

We wrapped up with random knowledge, as per usual. Tonight's questions ran the gamut from the geography of Andorra to Skynet to Stand By Me (yes! again!) and proved to be the shake-up that turned the standings on its head by the end of the night!

Congrats to Team Venture on a strong first place win, followed by Scruffy Looking Nerf Herders in 2nd place and See You In Hell, Amigos! in 3rd. Ruth from Beer Make Smart took this week's email bonus, a tiny little box of gum. Chew yourself silly, Ruth!

Don't forget - Rumble in the Pub kicks off this summer, and Austin is so close that you'd all be fools, FOOLS not to play along! Click here for more info, and I'll see you next Wednesday!

A year ago, I was but a newbie with a microphone and a red pen. A year later... QUIZMISTRESS, MOTHERFUCKER!

We celebrated a year of ME with a great quiz, launching with one of the infamous Duh! rounds. Thankfully, everyone scored 6 or higher, with a lot of perfect scores. Most people who didn't have a perfect score got tripped up with the hockey question, which isn't surprising since we don't have any ice in San Antonio except for our tea.

Round 2, Howl at the Moon, took wolves as its theme - everything from "Werewolves of London" to Steppenwolf to "Thrift Shop" - yeah, because of rockin' a wolf on your noggin. Also, one team called it "Gift Shop." That's cute.

I love Real or Shit rounds, and tonight's Round 3 on Real Subreddit, or Some Shit We Made Up? was no exception. Reading through the wacky descriptions, I really wanted them all to be real. The great thing? Even if they weren't real, someone on the Internet is already getting together to talk about all of 'em (even if it's not on Reddit). Man, the Internet is a strange and wonderful thing.

Round 4, Ride That Fence, took us through bo(a)rders of various types and locales. I keep forgetting that Barnes and Noble is still around, even if they took Borders out. Round 5 turned its back on us, and everyone did hella good on it, so that's all I'm gonna say about it.

Fun times for Round 6, The Satanic Versus. As much fun to quiz as it was to answer, I'm sure! The Powergloves knew that not only did Milhouse sell Bart's soul for Pogs - but it was Alf Pogs! Also, many of you correctly identified Moby as the sell-out electronica guy with an uber pretentious friend. Does anyone actually remember Play? I only remember one specific instance of listening to the album on purpose (as in, not in a commercial), and all I know was that it was college, there was a black light involved, and possibly some form of substance abuse and sexual tension. (Not even mine! ARGH!)

Aaaaanyway... Round 7 took on non-American actors doing "American" accents (with varying levels of convincing-ness). Damn those Faux-mericans, taking jobs away from hard-working Americans who don't have to fake ridiculous accents! We already HAVE ridiculous accents!

After a random knowledge round that challeged you to know things about everything from tea to ampersands to "Operation," we wrapped up with some strong scores. Congrats to The Powergloves, taking 1st place and $25. Beer Make Smart was just two points behind in second place, with Team Venture rounding out the top 3. A hearty handshake to Pat for winning tonight's email bonus, a much-coveted Obey Your Quizmaster pint glass. (Not that he ever does.)

I've had a blast over the last year with the crew at the Lion and Rose at the Forum! We have a tight crew of regulars that comes back week after week, which gives me the opportunity to get to know you all a little better. This is the only quiz I host each week - there are some QMs who host at three, four, or more venues a week - so I get to pour all of my energy into this two hours every week. I look forward to getting started on Year Two!

ALSO - check out Rumble in the Pub, a regional tournament kicking off June 1st and running through July 25th. We're just a short drive away from Austin, home of one of the regional smackdowns. It's free to join and you might secure a spot to the smackdown and a chance to win a butt-load of money! Click here to learn more about it. Oh, and don't forget to like Geeks Who Drink at Lion and Rose Forum on Facebook! See y'all next week!

I was born and raised in Texas, love the pursuit of useless knowledge and a well-aimed pun. I'm also a bit of a beer snob and was on a team that tied for 84th at Geek Bowl VI (Team Do You Like My Sweater?). And I dress like a colorblind four-year-old.

It was kind of a quiet night at the Lion and Rose tonight with the Spurs playing Game 2 of their series (which ultimately, they did not win... better luck on Friday!). But many of our die-hard regulars showed up to PLAY. Awesome.

Let's go over what we learned tonight, shall we?

  • The working title of Texas Chainsaw Massacre was actually Debbie Does Schertz (A Dramatic Retelling).
  • The Janka scale measures the hardness of my dick. Not really... I don't have a dick. (Just a giant microphone.)
  • Several teams think Michael Moore is a Big Fat Idiot. (Which may very well be true, but it wasn't exactly who I was looking for.)
  • No one knows the second middle name of George R.R. Martin. R... something.
  • Pocahontas came back in the mid-90s to score a pop hit with Vanessa "L. Yeah" Williams.
  • More people consider The Drudge Report to be a legit news site than MSNBC (who knows, they may be on to something).
  • It's a long-ass drive from Greece to Syria. And you have to go through Turkey.
  • Bundesländer is a really really fun word to say. And there's an umlaut in it. Awesome!
  • Agamemnon's wife was a real bitch.
  • The stage names of Kris Kross actually started out as "Pete" and "Re-Pete."
  • Montego is a place in Jamaica. (Wait, I didn't learn that, YOU learned that.)

Congratulations to our big winners, The Analrapists, followed by Venture in 2nd place and Mother Lovers in 3rd. Joe from The Easy Readers won tonight's email bonus, a fetch Mona Lisa tote bag. With a zipper!

Since May 9th is my official year-as-QM anniversary, we're gonna celebrate next week. There's talk of teams wearing costumes and who knows, maybe someone will buy me a shot or bake me a cake or something. Whatever happens, I look forward to continued shenanigans in the next year. Y'all make Wednesday one of my top seven days of the week.
