It was a fun time at the Lion and Rose Forum tonight, with a great crop of twelve teams all vying for free booze and bragging rights! We jumped out of a gate with a easy-but-deceptive Round 1, called simply "Duh!" Everyone was tripped up by Tina Fey's real first name. No, this wasn't a "Grant's Tomb" question - it's actually Elizabeth (or Liz, if you prefer).
Almost everyone slayed Round 2, on musical clips featuring places. But it turns out y'all are a little shaky on whether Egon Spengler (of Ghostbusters) or Adam Savage (of Mythbusters) is a licensed coroner (it's Egon - I know, you just want it to be real life!).
Round 4 on "Things Girls Compare Your Small Penis To" was a high-scoring round for all, with three teams landing a perfect 8. Congrats to all-girl Beer Make Smart, almost all-girl Beauties and a Beast, and no-girl solo player Michael on knowing your gherkins from your baby carrots.
Reaching around thematically for Round 5, your knowledge of animal asses was pretty hit and miss. Ditto for Locks, Stocks and Barrels in Round 6, although I have to admit that The Nightmare Before Christmas would have been pretty awesome with Leonard Nimoy as part of the voice cast instead of Paul Reubens. Right? Right??
After fair-to-middlin' rounds 7 and 8 (all those Ellen Page clips sound the same to me, too!), we ended up with a three-way tie for 5th place which I urged Beer Make Smart, 5th Place Winners and Venture to settle in the parking lot.
We also had a more exciting tie for 2nd between Beauties and the Beast, The Power Gloves and Just Here For The Beer that went to a round of Urban Dictionary Roulette to settle the score. Just Here For The Beer ended up living up to their name after getting pushed out of the money. Sorry, guys! The Power Gloves ended up in 3rd and the beast from Beauties and the Beast bringing his ladies into 2nd by convincingly defining "moist gherkin" as "a shamefully limp post-coital penis." Well done, sir!
In the end, Nos Venit, Nos Bibit, Nos Vicit took the top spot by just two points. In fact, there were only 10 points between 1st place and 8th place. Quite a night, and I'm not just jerkin' your gherkin! Props also to my lovely guest assistant Paulina! See you all next week, and don't forget to show some love (or at least some like) to the Facebook page for our quiz!

This week I took the reins of the Geeks Who Drink quiz at the Lion and Rose Forum, and y'all were as gentle as a girl could have asked for her first time. With 12 teams over the course of the night, it was a great way to get started as H.B.I.C. at my new venue.
Round 1 on evil, devils, and fruits went over well, although inexplicably several of our teams think Matthew Broderick is really, really old - how else could he have starred in 1984's "Oh God! You Devil"? Pretty damn near everybody kicked Round 2's ass and invoked the joker. Turns out y'all know your really lame Christian covers of popular songs (I think the "Gold Digger" cover was my personal favorite).
We also had a few perfect scores on Round 3, "Balderdash" - I trust your SAT Verbal scores did as well! Way to have a great vocabulary! Round 4, "Crime and Punishment" came out a little tough, and I got to say "Fyodor Dostoyevsky" on the mic. (At least I didn't have to try to spell it. Luckily spelling doesn't count.) The visual round on famous-people-initials-as-atomic-symbols didn't throw too many folks off.
Jeopardy superstar Ken Jennings served up Round 6 on Alex Trebek (Suck it, Trebek!) and other quiz-show miscellanea. Round 7, on talking animals in movies, produced some solid scores that took us into a tough random Round 8. Y'all know your Barneys, but not your punk rock record labels.
At the end of the night, Beer Make Smart took home the big money, with Venture bringing up 2nd place and I Challenge You to a Slap Bet in 3rd. Honorable mention goes to my own former Geeks Who Drink team I'm So Good At Lightning Rounds, who placed just one point out of the money after driving all the way from Austin to be my quiz groupies.
We also bid farewell to Mumbles, who was present for the festivities. Next week it's all me, the only Quizmistress in San Antonio. Come for the estrogen, stay for the free beer! And be sure to like our brand spankin' new Facebook page, too!

They say all good things must come to an end. Unfortunately, my reign as quizmaster at the Lion and Rose ended tonight. But not before a memorable night with my favorite quizzers. (Cue the background music.)
We started out with a mystery round, with the answers connecting to the theme of Shakespeare. Remember kids, he was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon. He wasn’t born in the Avon River. Round 2 was a round on XTREME covers. As if Boston, MIA and Katy Perry aren’t XTREME enough. Round 3 was a speedround on the top-earning dead celebrities. Always makes one feel good about their station in life finding out people earned more lying in a box than one will ever earn in their lifetime.
Round 4 dealt with current stuff around the world. We traveled from Colombia to Kazakhstan to Nicaragua to Manchester in the span of a few minutes. (But seriously, what are Americans doing watching soccer? Is this country becoming socialist right before my eyes?) Round 5 was a visual round on TV, which most of you did really well in. Six teams aced the round, which I don’t think has happened since ever.
Round 6 was a round called “I Love My Dead Gay Round.” A round about things that are dead, gay or both. And no, there were no questions about santorum in the afterlife. Round 7 had TV themes done in dubstep. Judging by the number of groans in the crowd when I announced the theme, there’s a lot of dubstep fans out there.
Per usual, Power Gloves took first place. Friends of Sheldon came in second, and Damn, Time’s Up took third. Next week, Quizmistress Sarah will be taking over the good ship GWD. I’ll be off to work a night job that is taking me away from regular quizmastering. But, like the song says, think of me, and I’ll be there. Godspeed.
