Last night was quite the treat all on fronts. QM, quiz pro, and dear friend of mine Mike Rucki came to celebrate his birthday with me at the Elm. I started him off right with a card full of glitter so he looked like an off-the-clock stripper all night, especially with his awesome hat. I pointed out to him that he didn't smell like one, not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. BUT! He did have a celebratory HAT (see left), AND I told everyone in the bar to donate just a single dime to the "Get Mike Drunk for His Birthday" fund because we had 18 MOTHA FUCKIN TEAMS!! Clearly I have great skills in the art of persuasion because Mike wound up with <drumm roll>......
One. One Dime.
Passed to him from the booth next door. The dime wasn't from the booth next door, but the dime had been attached to a napkin with an alligator clip that read "Pass it down to the guy with the birthday". So, thank you, One. One Person. For the dime, and the alligator clip, on behalf of Señor Miguel and his birthday fiesta..
We had a night of firsts/records. First time I've hosted at The Elm with 18 teams, that was really exciting. First time I got to tell a team Ram Rod that they had to change their horribly stupid, unclever, overused name. When they asked why, I explained to them the blacklist of stupid names, and gave the example of "My couch pulls out but I don't", to which they replied, "Yea, we used that name at trivia in Peru". Hmmm, well it seems that technology and hygiene aren't the only places they fall behind the US in. ZING!
Fun quiz last night! Round one was Classic Horror Haikus-- not a lot of perfect scores, but one from the winning team ¡Señor Miguel's Birthday Fiesta! at least. They also had a perfect score on Round 3- Was it Longer or Shorter Than Kim Kardashian's Marriage, in which all the answers were longer. Both rounds seemingly easy, in my opinion, but tripped up quite a few teams. The reception of Round 2: Jesus Told Me To Make Lame Parodies was glorious last night! So, too, was the ability of the Apologetix to sound like the people they are somewhat impersonating, a lot of times I can't tell the difference. I'm convinced, because of this, that we are being fed Christian propaganda in the facade of pop music and we don't even realize it!!!! This may also be because I just watched Kevin Smith's movie Red State last night. But I digress... One more round of notable mention was Round 7- Love Themes. The outcome on this round was hit or miss--mostly miss. My favorite part of it, however, is a tie: The fact that Con Air was in the round was glorious to me, becasue it is NOT a love themed movie in the slightest AND it involved lots of inmates; and when I was reading the answers and only took the correct sequel of Star Wars II, a team that didn't get it shouted out to a team that did "YOU NERDS!!", as if it was an insult in any way, shape or form in this forum. Too good.
The Sexecutioners were deceptive in their game play; they were not very far from the bottom of the list all night and then BLAM! Jokered a score of 8 in the final round and as most people struggled with it, they bumped up to the money spot! Never Nudes held their own in 2nd place all night, weren't as excited about that as they should have been but maybe it's their team's time of the month. ¡Señor Miguel's Birthday Fiesta! also held their own at the TIPPY TOP of the scoreboards throughout the whole quiz. Not a bad birthday gift to give yourself: being smarter than 17 other teams and drinking a few free bonus beers as you revel in it.
Last night was in the Top 5 of my experiences hosting a Geeks Who Drink and I hope it landed somewhere around there for the people playing as well. Thanks for coming out, can't wait to see what next week brings! (crosses fingers) not syphilis again, not syphilis again...

This week's blog will be represented in a poem. Great times last night, thanks for playing... And now, for my poetic genius:
The quiz was hot, the beer was pure
Twas a Tuesday, that's for sure
The Peeps were ill, I had the cure,
Twas a Tuesday, that's for sure
The End is the Beginning
At least in Round 1 this is true
In order to be winning
You need to know more than 2 + 2
Round 2 brought us back to the days of Ska
Or according to some, a variation of
Everyone knew "Come on Eileen", Huzzah!
The rest of the round, they didn't much love
Skip to the visual, a mash up for brands
Not the easiest Round 5 that I've seen
Most people knew starbucks, lend them your hands!
But Paul Reubens mugshot? Well that's just mean
Imaginationland is a glorious place!
Full of Fight Club and dragons and Mal
Sometimes I wonder what goes on behind YOUR face
But then again, you're like talking to a wall
Morally Bankrupt killed it, no victory tour
Twas a Tuesday, that's for sure
The team names were fun, none too obscure
Twas a Tuesday, that's for sure
