That's right, Mother's Day fell on a big day this year- the birth date of Robert Pattinson. You know, that actor who ruined vampires forever? Seriously, nothing worse then a sparkly, vegetarian vampire. I know I am supporting that entire franchise of horrible werewolves and vampires- I fully admit I have seen all the movies and read all the books. But, all that brooding and sparkling kindof makes me feel dirty. I like my vampires evil, sucking blood, and digging themselves out of graves. This is what Mother’s Day brings out in me- thinking about soul sucking beings (and guilt, loads of guilt).
Got a chance to hang with the good people of Jonesys last night- we had a low-key crowd of 8 die hard teams. Everybody laughed, cried, and did a little Kung Fu fighting.
Congrats to 1L Wonders who brought down an 81 point first place finish.

Round 5 often gets overlooked. It's the one round where there's really no time limit, it's quietly handed in along with other rounds, and it doesn't get much play on the mic. But last night, the first question in Round 5 defined the quiz: Quiet.
That's not to say there weren't a good number of teams or to say it wasn't competitive, because it was. With double points up for grabs on round 7, it was even more competitive than normal, but it was still quiet. Library quiet.
Perhaps it was the weather. Jonsey's tends to get rowdy when it's warmer. Maybe it was the mystery of Round 4 or those extra points. Or it could have been the sweet new World War II-era pencil sharpener I brought to everyone's delight. Hard to say. But teams were on their game and listening intently. That was great in Round 1, where we all got a good laugh at Kentucky's expense… Not so great in Round 2 when the quiz lashed back and fed us Miley Cyrus. Either way, repeats were down and point totals were up.
And Kristen, everyone's favorite server, was back! After traveling to the far east, she returned laden with jade and spices. Okay, not so much with the jade and spices, but she did go to the far east and we were all happy to have her back.
Yet, despite the concentration and Kristen's return, that didn't mean it was an easy quiz. We had more rounds where teams completely bombed than I've ever seen at Jonsey's. We had to play round 7 all the way through 3 times to give teams a chance. And remember, it wasn't a matter of not being able to hear.
With 3 double point rounds, strategic joking was all the rage, but the win went to 1L Wonders and rightfully so, since they proudly answered "the geekiest question ever" and got it right. Oh and they knew who Jump5 are. However, 4 Eggs, One Basket did a phenomenal job scoring 2 bonus questions and were edged out by only one point (and cursed Jeff Goldblum and The Fly all the way out of the bar).
Though I have to give a hat tip to Uno Mas Dos Equis for playing a solo round when the rest of his team decided to call it on account of rain. It is a true quiz fan who sticks out 8 rounds solo and kills enough mexican beers to start a glass factory. Now that's Geek AND Drink, no matter what the volume.

First off, who in their right mind willfully adopts a nickname that is synonymous with involuntary spitting?
Anyhow, it was another gorgeous night last night. In fact, the sun was just setting as Quiz got underway. And clearly, even by the end of Round1, people's minds were still outside. True, many knew that Jeff Goldblum and Gina Davis narrowly escaped making the most irritating baby known to man, but surprisingly Jeff Jones was not remembered for the bonus question, which I'm sure he's probably happy about.
In all actuality though, Round 2 defined the night. It seemed you either knew Glee, or you couldn't bear to even participate in the round. I felt for the folks in the latter category. Not only were they force to listen to a parade of auto-tuned faux-teenagers, but the songs weren't even that great. But for those that did know their Glee (or in the case of 1L Wonders, listened to 3 hours of it in preparation for quiz…), this was the time to build a lead.
Round 3 went off with out a hitch and no one was trampled or had their ass grabbed on their way to turn things in. However, in Round 4, the tides shifted a bit. Suddenly, all that Glee knowledge was now worthless (and still shameful). Instead, Round 4 wanted people to know about things like "The Declaration of Independence" and "other countries". Shit got real and fast. It was a mess. No one even got the bonus. I ended up giving it to a man who answered "Scientology" simply because I enjoyed that he called it a made up religion. By the end of round 6, teams were dropping like flies.
And Round 7 didn't help. Okay, it's true, some people were really stoked there was a question about Nu Shooz, but aside from that we were hemorrhaging teams. Glee had shattered their will to quiz and with a bunch of hard questions followed by spelling… of all things… spelling! well, they just couldn't hang.
Then things got ugly and teams turned on me during random knowledge. Now I admit that I don't pronounce everything 100% correctly. Sometimes I'm closer to 50%. But I do my best to make sure people know enough to understand and get the question right, despite my unique style of accent. Clearly scarred by listening to Glee, this was not enough for teams last night. By the end, they were splitting hairs about how to pronounce Flo Rida. Yeah, that's right.
So, when the curtain fell on that quiz, it was the Gleeks who held out the longest and were able to ride big scores from round 2 all the way to the end. Congratulations to A Doctor, A Lawyer and a Polak Walk Into a Bar…, 1L Wonders and DoubleTap for placing first, second, and third respectively. May Brittany S. Peers haunt you.
But The Cake Farts were really the winners in my book. That name still makes me laugh.
