Kyle (Kyle the Girl)

I'm Kyle. I'm a girl. Yeah, that's right, a girl. A Star Wars loving, BBC watching, Mel Brooks quoting, Monty Python dancing, Ginger girl! Think I'm not geek enough for this? Come to my quiz and find out!

I love people who come up with uncreative team names, then can’t take a joke when I make fun of it for the next two hours. Yeah, that’s right, we had a “My Couch Pulls Out But I Don’t” at quiz this evening. Hate to break it to you, but that is the lamest, most uncreative team name in the world. Oh, you’ve been using it for ten years? Then it’s ten years out of date. On the Quizmaster boards (yes, we have forums where we just complain about you) it’s maybe the most talked about topic. And we all HATE it. Stop thinking you’re “creative” because you’re not.

Other quiz musings:

  • This girl keeps looking at me like I’m speaking German and she’s trying to interpret it. Seriously, this goes on the whole night.
  • We should all watch more YouTube videos
  • Apparently my quizzers had nothing they’re trying to tell us…as evidenced by Round 2
  • I’m not sure who doesn’t know the most famous line of Gone with the Wind, as it’s been spoofed in practically every medium, but sadly there were plenty who just didn’t give a damn
  • The Liberty Bell was a gift from England, that broke…do you think they were still bitter about 1776?
  • Michelle Obama apparently uses vegetables to battle Human Society…sounds like a good comic book story
  • Hoover wasn’t assassinated…but I’m guessing it wasn’t because people didn’t try
  • So close to 100% on the celebrity causes round, if only we’d realized that Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project was a foundation supported by Charlize Theron
  • Someone thought McLovin from Superbad was actually named Kyle…should I be flattered or repulsed?
  • Apparently we don’t watch enough animal related children’s TV
  • Who knew you could win $1 million on Wheel of Fortune?
  • It’s pretty fitting that we ask a View Askewniverse question the week Kevin Smith finishes writing Clerks 3 (the movie)

Best moment of the night: As I was reading the scores from the first break I skipped over the “My Couch” team, simply calling them “The lamest team name in the world.” As I got to the first place team in the standings, the leader of the Couches started celebrating, before I read the first place team. He looked at me confused at which point I said I refused to read his team name because it was old, unoriginal, and lame. I thought his early celebration however was priceless and I had to document it here.

It’s summer time, which means we have a lot of new teams showing up to play. To my regulars, get to quiz early, and make advance preparations if you can’t be. Not that we don’t love our virgins and newbies, but we love our regulars too. Also, now that it’s stopped snowing you really have no excuse not to leave the house. So until next time, you stay geeky Freshcraft.

How does no one remember the Sideways Stories from Wayside School? The school that was accidentally built 19 classrooms tall instead of 19 classrooms at ground level in a row? This question got me so many dirty WTF looks…I wasn’t really sure what to do. And to follow that up with a question about Harry Potter. I thought the quizzers were going to walk out on me. Luckily they didn’t, but man, were they confused. Worst round of the night was the Kids TV Theme Song round…I mean sure, you don’t watch kids TV now, but most of these shows were mid/late-90s. F---Blues Clues and Dora, this is Magic School Bus and Wishbone!

Other random thoughts from quiz:

  • Wouldn’t it be awesome if Anna Paquin was in Jurassic Park…and then won an Oscar for her performance?
  • Babysitters Club was far superior to Sweet Valley High (which I never read)
  • When in doubt, guess “Stairway to Heaven"
  • The song “Strokin’” (yes about masturbation) was commonly mistaken for “Let’s Hear it for the Boys” which isn’t about masturbation, but is still a funny mix up when you look at it
  • If only the Houston Rockets made it to the play offs… oh that’s hilarious
  • Kate Winslet gets naked a LOT

I’m a little appalled at the number of teams this evening who were so stumped by the questions that they threw up their hands in exasperation. I’m even more appalled that by the end of the night, those acts of disgust proved themselves to be mostly unfounded. Okay maybe zodiac signs aren’t your thing, but you know when you were born, right? So you’ve probably heard someone tell you your sign at least once in your life…so then you can rule that out. Or the team that just gave up on the Master P.M.S. before and after round? That was the best round of the night (average score 7) and you just said “F--- that!” That’s why you’re in last place, you didn’t even try.

Hopefully this will be a lesson to new/returning teams. A bad guess is better than no guess at all. And if you think about it you can probably figure out the theme. And we’re really not all out to “get you” or make you feel “worthless.” We’re out to have a good time. And if you have a problem with that!.... you can suggest your own rounds on our website.

Until next week, you stay geeky Freshcraft.

I walked in to the bar tonight and the lights were dimmer. In fact they’d been completely redone, so it seemed like we were in a club of some sort. Just waiting for the disco ball to come down. Add to that I debuted a new playlist today, and one of our regular teams was Feasting on $175 worth of winnings, and it was a frickin party! Oh, and 4 rounds worth 16 points, for a total of 112 up for grabs!

Random Thoughts During Quiz:

  • The Wall…starring Red Foxx?
  • Duran Duran vs. Motorhead
  • The Harlem Shake song, sung by the Harlem Shake guy?
  • I’m impressed that no one mixed up Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship
  • Who died in Jurassic Park AND Jackie Brown…Newman from Seinfeld of course
  • Is there anyone in True Romance who lived to the end?
  • We did surprisingly well on the round of Dictators…
  • Jeanie never showed her belly button, but censors also debated showing her neck and shoulders #little known fact
  • Boombox vs. Walkman…where would you rather find a genie?
  • Your lack of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse knowledge disturbs me
  • Dr. Doom was in Fantastic Four, not Captain America, but both are Marvel, so nice try
  • I don’t think Kal-El was excited that Earth worshiped flying men
  • If you don’t know what states don’t have the death penalty, do yourself a favor and don’t commit felony crimes in any state.

On the matching visual round, I had someone write in an answer that wasn’t an option…I’m not sure what that means. Either they weren’t reading directions or they were just really testing their botany skills.

Let it be known, that getting drunk and feasting on expensive beer is a great way to get out of the money during a quiz at my bar.

Also, when I’m repeating questions, it’s probably a great idea to stop yelling out questions you’d like me to repeat and listen to the question you asked me to repeat.

Another great night at Freshcraft, and we got out before the snow hit. Good timing this week, we didn’t have to fight the snow to get to the bar. Of course we’ll get to the bar one way or another, cuz we’re Geeks who Drink.

Until next week, you stay geeky Freshcraft.
